The Courage To Do The Impossible Lies In The Hearts of Men.

Set during the time of Napoleon, the ship of Captain “Lucky” Jack Aubrey is massively attacked by a much quicker and better equipped French warship in the waters off of South America. Needing extensive repair, Aubrey and his crew spend the time fixing it up while set in sail and encounter challenges of the relentless ocean. The story takes the time to develop the characters that are tightly crammed in this ship; it’s a long journey around South America where Aubrey takes his mission. He’s stalking this French ship as a matter of duty; or is he stalking it out of pride? Aubrey is challenged to choose between his duty as Captain and his long time friendship with the Doctor who sees Aubrey’s mission as having lost sight. After a stop around the Galapagos Islands, it is learned that evolution can happen in many different ways, including the strategies of war and friendship.

Master and Commander was nominated for 10 Academy Awards including Best Picture. It’s worth checking out if you haven’t seen it yet.

VIDEO QUALITY: 4/5

The 2.35:1 image is nicely detailed and offers a neutral range of colours making it both calming and pleasing to the eye. What is noticeable about this film is that the colour tones stay consistent from scene to scene with virtually no anomalies. What I did notice was a lot of silhouette imagery – foreground images were darkened from the brighter backgrounds. It was sometimes difficult to see what was happening during these shots, but in contrast to that comment, shadow detail seemed good for the remainder of the film. I was expecting a bit more resolution to be cranked out of this transfer, but the quality is also on par with other Fox catalogue titles. They all seem to have a particular “look” to them…maybe it’s the equipment they use for their transfers that adds its own visual signature to the final product, but it’s something that’s not describable, but rather a subconscious feeling. Whatever it is, it doesn’t put Fox as the top ranking for best looking catalogue releases. They are respectable, but not exemplary. In the end resolution is good and much better than DVD, but a bit gritty – and not the natural film grain grittiness because I like that. It’s something else in the image that feels a subtly hazed and restricting. It’s noticeable on big screens but I’m sure on smaller HD sets the effect is not noticeable.

AUDIO QUALITY: 5/5

I am very impressed with the audio of this film. The movie is five years old and blows away soundtracks today. This was one of those titles I’ve been holding out on to watch just to make sure that I got the best experience possible. That was during the day of DVD. I never did get around to the DVD so it was unintentional that watching this for the first time was in HD and with a DTS-HD Master Audio soundtrack. The soundtrack delivers and impressively three-dimensional sound space with just the right amount of ambience applied to the sound effects. The creaking of the ship and the feeling that wood is bending all around you is constant in this film. But it’s not just that I gush about, it’s the integration of it and the space created around those sounds so they don’t sound dry and unprocessed. Artificial ambience is good if done correctly. Even the thick ‘thump-thumping’ of running footsteps on the upper deck sounds convincingly real and feels as if there is a dimension of height added to the mix. Dialogue sounds good and intelligible and the EQ of the soundtrack sounds acceptable to not be irritating to the ears. Bass in all channels is engaging, and the LFE hammers with the shot of cannons. This is demo-worthy material and a great movie too.

TACTILE FUN!! /
TACTILE TRANSDUCER ON/OFF?: ON

The LFE is integrated nicely in the mix. The main channels handle most of the bass, but when LFE support is needed, it’s not too aggressive and adds a bit more ummph to the soundtrack. The transducer assists with the experience even more.

SPECIAL FEATURES: 1.5/5

The documentary and featurettes of the DVD Collector’s Edition released in 2004 are missing from this release (yes, I do expect them to be transferred to BD. I think it’s the consumer expectation rule of thumb that if it’s been released on DVD, it should be on BD – exceptions only to the super duper mega box releases). So, the one feature that did carry over is the deleted scenes (24:20). They are not HD, in fact they seem to have a few video artefacts affecting them, but they do fill the full 1.78:1 screen with the 2.35:1 image. They aren’t bad scenes either; Weighing the Anchor is extended boat shots and adds some character in the voyage, then there is a ten minute segment on ship life and that was a treat to see, but it would slow the film down considerably if left in. Also included are nice pieces on the superstition, dentistry, articles of war, and the Galapagos gathering of animals.

New to both formats is the pop up map which when activated, it shows the travels of the ship along the coast of South America up to the Galapagos. There is also a historic and geographic trivia track. These are two special features that I don’t mind activating…they are interesting to me because it’s more my cup of tea. I’m a fact guy, so reading out of a textbook excites me.

The theatrical trailer is 1.85:1 and doesn’t look like HD resolution. Other HD trailers on this disc are The Day After Tomorrow, Eragon, and Kingdom of Heaven. This title is also D-Box motion coded for those early adopters taking advantage of the technology.

IN THE END...

Master and Commander is a well written and produced film that is a pleasure to watch. The picture quality is on par with other Fox catalogue titles filmed over the past few years and the sound design is splendid. There’s an improvement going with an HD release, but I’ll bet my money that some readers who have the DVD sets may be a bit hesitant with replacing just yet.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Good Review Michael. As one who has the excellent special edition DVD release, I will not be buying this release on BD. I will definitely be waiting for the expected double-dip on this title with ALL the extras. FOX really should be ashamed of themselves for blatantly doing this with almost every catalog title that they release....thanks FOX for saving me more money so that I can buy more fully realized special edition releases from other studios such as Disney and Warner.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

No way, this one is actually coming out?!?!?!?!? After months (or was it years?) of vaporware it's finally here?!?!?!

I'll most likely pick this up since it seems the A/V is up to snuff. After a year and a half of BD buying, I've realized that "not porting over all the DVD extras" for DVDs I already own is not a dealbreaker for me. 99.9% of the time even if they port extras from DVD it's not in 1080p. If it were, that would be a different story. Since I already own M&C the "ultimate edition" package, that will serve as my "extras" discs to the Blu Ray.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

This is an absolute fave. The SD-DVD audio was incredibly impressive...especially the DTS track on the CE. It will be amazing to see if the HD SQ can be all that much better (especially on my middlin' system). But I am going to enjoy finding out!

Hope there are good release week prices on this. Or else, I wait.

So, Michael...you never watched Master & Commander on SD-DVD (and subsequently don't have any way to compare the PQ or SQ of the BD with the SD? I would have loved to hear what you thought about that.

BTW, the release date should be May 13, 2008.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

As someone who just got a combo player and would LOVE to add this and KINGDOM OF HEAVEN to my library, I'm so irrirated by Fox's awful hi-def strategy of high list price/little content that I'm holding off. Same goes for PREDATOR, INDEPENDENCE DAY, the list goes on...

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Thanks for the review! Given the lack of extras (no surprise) and the high retail price (again no surprise) I'll wait for a decent sale before picking this one up, but I'll throw it on my Netflix queue in the meantime.

BTW, can anyone find this listed on Amazon? I still can't find it which is strange. Maybe they got tired of relisting it.

Meh, no extras no sale!

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

I think I will wait for the inevitable Amazon B2G1 sale before picking up anymore barebones Fox Blu-ray Disc releases.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

It'd have to be a B0G1 offer before I'd buy a bare-bones Fox Blu-ray release...

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

While I will wait until this release drops in price before I pick it up, I'm all over this one and I've only seen like the first 10 minutes of it! I'm really looking forward to hearing just how good those cannonballs sound in DTS MA-HD ripping through the hull of the ship!!!

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

As much as I want this disc I'll be waiting for it to show up in Fry's $14.99 sale or as a BOGO just like most of you. Fox can eat my shorts.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

And they wonder why BD isn't catching on as fast as DVD did. . .

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

So the PQ is only on par with other catalogue releases from Fox, "respectable, but not exemplary." If those titles include "I, Robot" and "Independence Day," then I'm all over "Master and Commander" as those two BDs looked fantastic. In fact, I'd say they looked exemplary.

Mike Frezon

I changed the date - thanks!

Also, I do have a way to compare. I think I have like three copies of this title on DVD. Like so many more I have sitting on my shelf, I just have never put the time to watching some titles despite really wanting to.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Thanks Michael for the review.

This is one of the titles I have been waiting for and I will be in the store as soon as the doors open to buy this title. This will be one of the first titles that I will rewatch once I purchase a new receiver and replace my current Blu-ray player. Again I am glad this title is coming out!

While it may not have extra's like many other Fox titles, IMHO Fox has produced Blu-ray titles with very good video and audio quality. For me all I want is the movie with great picture and lossless sound. I do hope that Fox does start including extras for those who really want that.

Ditto. Picked up a number of Fox BD titles (incl. Day After Tomorrow & Independence Day) at last week's $14.99 sale at Fry's. I'll happily wait on this (and Butch Cassidy & The Sundance Kid) to hit the same price point.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

This is one of my all time favorite movies, but I was hoping it would replace the nice box-set. It will be an eventual purchase, but I'll wait for a price drop or some special offer before taking the plunge.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Micheal - Thanks for the fine work

Yet again, CE additions left off a BD. As Aaron says 'and they wonder why'
I don't think there's any wonder to it.

I think the agenda is loud and clear - Film Only in 08, Extras in 09 forward for BD 2.0 whatever they want to call the second dip.

It's not about the disk space, is it?

Is this still being released tomorrow, 13 May? Amazon didn't ship it out today along with some other titles. I may have to look around tomorrow to pick it up, but they had it on their site at one time...

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Just picked M&C up today and will be watching this title shortly. This is one of the titles I have been waiting for and I am glad that Fox did not release it when it was having issues. The only thing that would have been awsume is that if they would have mixed it to 7.1 DTS-HD MA.

Thanks for the review Michael. I own a copy of M&C on SD-DVD so I am definantly not one of the few you mentioned. Keep up the great reviews and I look foward to more in the future.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

Yup...Wal-Mart, Bes Buy, circuit city, and Hastings did not have it...

Oddly, I pre-ordered this about a month ago when it was on amazon's site...then a few days ago it disappeared for no apparent reason, so I cancelled it and thought I'd just pick it up today. Yesterday or the day before, it reappeared on amazon for sale. By that time, I had made up my mind to save my money and wait for the eventual re-release from Fox. My current 2-disc CE will do just fine, it is still a demo disc for sound quality and is one of the best sounding SD-DVDs out there.

But, the two books I ordered did arrive today. Saul Friendlander's "Years of Extermination" (Winner of last years Pulitzer Prize) and Jose Saramango's "Blindness" winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and due to come out this year in theaters from Fernando Meirelles, the director of City of God and Constant Gardener. It stars Julianne Moore, Mark Ruffalo, Alice Braga, Danny Glover, and Gael García Bernal.

I checked out the trailer for it and I think it will be among this years best. It's already up for the Golden Palm at Cannes.

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

I purchased my copy of M&C at Fry's and they had at least 10 other discs on the shelf. While the video quality was not the absolute best I have seen compared to other Blu-ray releases, it still is quite good and the sound is awsume. There are some scenes that look good and others that look great and have lots of detail. I currently do not have the capability to decode the lossless DTS-HD MA but even in listening to the full bore DTS portion of the title, the audio is very engaging and packs a big punch during battle scenes. The movie IMHO is well done from the script down to the acting in which Russle Crow provides a great performance, as do the other actors. This will be one of the movies I rewatch once I upgrade my receiver as I would like to compair the DTS from the DVD to the DTS-HD MA on the Blu-ray, all for shits and giggles.

Michael,

After skipping around this disc tonight (I caved and bought it today), I agree wholeheartedley with your assessment of the video. I kept waiting for a scene in the daylight (vs. the night or the fog) where I could see some extra detail in faces and uniforms. Unfortunately, it couldn't quite keep up with the video on some of the better looking releases out there when those scenes arose. Much like you, I also felt it was a tad grainy, perhaps bordering on noisy? I'm not an expert on video noise so I'll default to some other experts on this forum, but I did feel it was a bit much. For me, the video gets 4/5 stars and it's a 4 by a small margin.

The audio on the other hand knocked my socks off and shook the walls of my HT!!! Truth be told, I bought this disc for the audio alone knowing how much I loved it as demo material on the DTS-equipped DVD. I had to keep my pre/pro at a relatively safe level as my wife was sleeping yet it still delivered in spades. I'm really looking forward to when I can let 'er rip!

Re: HTF BLU-RAY REVIEW: Master and Commander

I was really disappointed by the video. It clearly didn't get an HD master, and considering how new it is, it should look fine. Instead, it's not much better than an upconverted SD DVD. But they also used the existing audio mix, too, not a 7.1 mix, so Fox was damn lazy on this one.

The best example of the video's shortcoming is early on, when the men are rowing frantically for the fog bank. The Surprise emerges from the fog and glides by. The fog doesn't look the least bit realistic.
