Criterion announces first Blu-ray titles - Page 34

I saw the 3-D trailer for Cameron's TITANIC in front of HUGO and it's the best converted 3-D I've seen. Had a real sense of depth and looked great. The 2-D version should look better than the film ever has before too, since Cameron brought the entire film through a 4K DI whereas the original release prints were optically converted from the Super-35 negative to anamorphic (there were some 70mm blow-up prints too).

Yeah, it does. I saw both the Titanic and The Phantom Menace 3-D trailers in front of Hugo and while I love Star Wars, I wasn't that impressed by the 3-D in the TPM trailer. I know people hate 3-D conversions but Titanic might be the exception to the rule.

same experience, I saw Beauty and the Beast, Star Wars and Titanic in 3D.  BatB looked awful (the famous chandelier shot was especially horrible), Star Wars had no impact, just a sort of pseudo depth, but no real dimensionality, Titanic looked jaw dropping, holy shit incredible/must-see.  And I think the film is just a 7/10 overall, so there you have it, my least favorite of the three but the one I'm most excited to see in the theatre.

Yep

Thief would be a very pleasant surprise.

It's been rumoured for some time; nice to have it confirmed.

Tangerine Dream enters the Collection.

I've been spoiled by the many fine blu-ray releases/upgrades from Criterion of late, but if I'm able to FINALLY retire my laserdisc-transfer-for-the-DVD copy of Thief from yore, I will be in home theatre nirvana.

BADLANDS.

Criterion indicated on their Facebook page that it is NOT BADLANDS. Several folks think it's this: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075654/

Alambrista! (1977)

I never heard of it although Ned Beatty and Eddie James Olmos is in it.

Alambrista! (1977) is an exceptional drama about an illegal immigrant. An independent film that is genuinely independent in how it was financed, made, and in its thinking. However, I wish Criterion had considered Robert M. Young's next film The Ballad of Gregorio Cortez (1982). Young applies his documentary approach to this historical western and manhunt thriller. I think it's a milestone in the western genre, and a lesson in how to reconstruct historical evidence into a strictly factual but exciting film.

It got some money from PBS's American Playhouse and was so highly acclaimed, and popular, that it received a theatrical release shortly thereafter. Who knows, maybe the folks at Criterion are aware of it now that they've gone ahead with Young's previous film.

Thanks for posting this. For some reason, my e-mail wasn't transmitting the graphics, and I wondered what this month's clue was.

At least you got the email. For some reason it hasn't shown up in my in box or my spam folder. I got that image from newsletter thread at the criterionforum.org

Seriously. I have been waiting for ages for more Tati on Blu-ray from Criterion. We have Playtime. Will we ever get Mon Oncle?

Les Vacances

Didn't see it in the US yet.

I own this one, it's very nice.

(I'm not an unrestrained admirer of Criterion, though they're generally good.)

It's region locked though AFAIK. Another vote for Mon Oncle.

WOW! You are smart! And that would be a very exciting release if correct.

I am smart (biggrin.gif), but that wasn't my guess (when I saw the picture on another forum it was accompanied by the guess). I do happen to agree with the guess (the image is titled rosemary & the medallion around Ruth Gordon's neck on the New Years Day drawing = ROSEMARY'S BABY)

Yes, it is region B. Don't buy it if your player can play it. (No play time.)

But it still proves a blu-ray version does exist.

And I gladly add a vote for Mon Oncle.

I'll be overjoyed if the Rosemary's Baby guess pans out.

Hopefully it won't be another monumental disappointment ala that Thief rumor.  frown.gif

A Rosemary's Baby Criterion edition is my number 1 most-wished-for title of all time, as well as being my favourite movie of all-time.

I even remember posting on a Criterion forum about Rosemary's Baby over 10 years ago. I would be tremendously excited for this release, and really hope the rumours are true...
