Well, the Contempt dvd is OOP, so the Blu-Ray is officially dead.

That was the one major title I had been waiting on since Criterion placed their announcement of Blu Rays... and I sold off my old copy last spring!

So I ran out last nite at a local Barnes and Noble and bought up the DVD copy again haha.

I wonder who gets the rights to it now.... I can't imagine another company releasing it on blu and if so I bet the disc space will be like 25GB. It won't be the same.

The Kagemusha announcement doesn't lessen the sting from losing Ran, but it is great news. (even better news is the Nikkatsu DVD set, but that is for another forum.)

Yep. To rub salt in the wound, HDD never took it down from their release listings, so it's been staring at me since last week every time I go to that site.

I don't understand why the entity that owns the rights to it would stop it from being released. Isn't that the whole point of owning the film, to make money off of it? Well, you can't do that if you don't let people buy it...

At least Kagemusha will be mine in August.

Nice to finally see a Kurosawa title, though I'm just lukewarm on Kagemusha. It just isn't one of my favorites.

Don't know whether I'll pick it up or not.

I am hoping Criterion can release 8 1/2 on blu around the time NINE is released in theatres... unless they lose the rights to it to.

Just had this email from Amazon.com:

Does anyone actually believe this nonsense that Howard's End is the one DVD everyone voted for? I'm sure they've had Howard's End planned for ages, as well as all the other titles they're doing. What a load.

Amazon is very much a populist arena. Could be that 'Howards End' was the title most recognized by a boat load of Amazon shoppers.

Yes, because Criterion has such a reputation of being misleading, shoddy and dishonest. Just because it isn't what you want to see doesn't mean it wasn't what others wanted to see (myself included--I voted for Howard's End).

Howard's End is somewhat surprising since it's never been an official Criterion title, just in their "Merchant Ivory" imprint.

I don't think Howard's End is any surprise, it would come out sooner or later. Whether it will be Criterion labeled or not is the only real question.

I'm sure all the other titles are still in the pipeline (or anything Criterion already has a high def version of and holds the licensing - those that expire first would likely be on deck the soonest).

It's insane to believe that the most recent movie with the most recognizable stars and the most Academy recognition would even be considered, particularly when you can pick up the well-loved source material at that very website!

over Picnic is insane to me,while its true Howards End will look fantastic
(do too a good transfer and good dp,and not do to what the director did)

I hope my guess that they do alll of them is true,Walkabout isn't anywhere
near Picnic to me,but its a film that clearly needs all the help it can get
it too isn't 16x9

pre-ordered it =). BD was out in Europe/UK edition already last year. i wanted to buy it back then but the imported was like $50!!!!
