Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I saw this today, I agree with the comments that it was about on par with the first Spider-Man. Probably a little better.

Although as with most origin Superhero movies these days, it suffers from the fact that they need to spend so much time on the origin that you unfortunately don't get to see much of said hero in action. (Batman Begins had just about the perfect balance in that regards).

Gear mentioned in this thread:

Iron Man (Ultimate Two-Disc Edition + BD Live) [Blu-ray]
Iron Man (Single-Disc Edition)

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I was one of the few people I knew that read the comics, and after so long this felt like a really good start to a series. Loved RDJ as Tony Stark, he fits this charecter so well. Great look to the suit and I thought the Rhodie bit: "Next time baby." was funny as hell. I guess he's also not naked under there after all eh? LOL

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

Saw it today and enjoyed it very much. It had just the right amount of humor without ever degenerating into camp. The action sequences were well done, and I didn't leave thinking there wasn't enough of them. There's a lot of (justified) criticism of overuse of CGI, but it really does serve the story here instead of the other way around. It's great to see such technology bring a comic book to life in a way that never could have been done in the past. Fine performances all around. I don't think I've ever see a better comic book movie.

I wish I had that suit!

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I caught it this morning and like many others, I thought it was a pretty good movie and one of the better (but not the best) comic book based movies.

Still, he's lightyears ahead of Tim Story IMO, and I know that he's not just a schlock for hire-- from the sound of it he takes great care with his projects.

Also, Favreau was on an episode of Monk a season or two ago as a dentist. He must have weighed 100 pounds more then. So props to him for losing all that weight and finding all that hair.

Jon Favreau didn't direct Swingers -- Doug Liman did.

Does Marvel Studios now have the rights to their already produced characters, like Spidey or the X-Men? I know they have plenty of other films to do (Cap, Ant Man, Thor, etc.) but it would be nice to see their version of Fantastic Four or Daredevil vs. the somewhat lame studio versions. Or would there have been any difference? Favreau's Iron Man just feels more like a Marvel Supers movie should and I don't know if it is coincidence or the more direct involvement of their parent company.

Any thoughts or good links to stories about this? I hope that Box Office blows this budget out of the water so we can be assured of future movies with Iron Man in it as well as the promise that post-credit scene hints at.

This is the one thing that pissed me off about Marvel movies (& Different studios). Is that if another character is with another studio. It can't be mentioned. For example. In Daredevil. They couldn't have the reporter work for the Daily Bugle (because the rights were with Spidey & Sony). So they had him work for the Post.
I hope now Marvel has a clause in any new deals. That other characters, places, etc can be mentioned. Even if they are with another studio.

I loved that line too. I also didn't see it coming, but maybe we should have. The key is that Stark changed over the course of the movie; grew up a bit. But then he says that last line and we realize that he's the same old Tony Stark.
I also loved the use of the Black sabbath song immediately after he says the line. It was just a great way to incorporate the song.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Review Thread

I loved it - and I wasn't a fan of Iron Man before this. While it may not be the "best" comic-book movie ever made, it may very well be the most fun!

Question: I didn't know to stay until after the end-credits. Could someone please tell me what scene I missed? (Spoiler tag it) Thanks.

I was really impressed with the quality of the CGI. There was only one short instance where it looked fake, I think in one of the shots of him flying by the ferris wheel. The rest it was spot on, almost like they'd built little robot models and filmed them. It really kept me in the movie, as it blended with the live action stuff really well.

That's one of the things that really bugged me about the Hulk, and even parts of Spiderman. The CGI'd characters didn't move like real people, their actions and movements were sped up, out of sync. And often it just looked like animated characters stuck against real backdrops, and just destroyed my suspension of belief, and took me right out of the movie.

Not so here. It was perfect. The suit was awesome.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I have to agree that as comic book adaptations this isn't up there with Batman Begins or Ghost in the Shell, but it's certainly in the same ballpark. Mostly I think the positive response it's getting (i.e. claims that it is better than Batman Begins) comes from the lighter tone.

Anyway, someone mentioned that the Mandarin was hinted at.

Unfortunately, I never really read any of the Iron Man comics that involved Mandarin, so I don't really know his story that well. Can someone tell me what the hint was? Was he one of the baddies in the caves at the beginning of the movie?

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I believe he is Raza, who was the guy that fired a rocket at Stark in the cave. Stark fired back, and Raza was scarred. This is the guy that Stane later paralyzed. In the comics, the Mandarin gets his power from his ten rings. Raza is the leader of the Ten Rings, and his introductory shot has him rotating the ring on his finger.

If this is the case, the nationality is changed. The Mandarin was originally Chinese.

Actually, I just read at wikipedia that the novelization has Raza stating that the Ten Rings has a leader higher than himself. That will be the Mandarin. And, that's probably what Stane meant when he told Raza that his "troubles were just beginning," or something to that effect. He failed, and the Mandarin will take it out of his hide.

.

I would hope they keep his ethnicity. I can't really wrap my head around a Mandarin who isn't Chinese. It'd be like having a villain called the Scotsman, only to cast a Ukrainian in the part because you don't want to risk offending Scottish people. Maybe you could make it work by claiming the dude just has a fetish for kilts but at that point you might as well say "screw it" and just acknowledge that you're creating a whole new character

No, read my last paragraph. That kind of threw all of that out.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I loved this movie. IMO its definitely one of the best comic book movies; right up there with Batman Begins, X2, and Spiderman 2. Can't wait to see it again. Especially since I missed the Nick Fury scene.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

After telling everyone how perfect RDJ was for this part, I was being told he had to fight really hard to be Iron Man. Who in the world were they considering for this? The only other person I could picture being Iron Man would be Christian Bale, and then I realized what other character he is playing. Awesome movie. That last scene in the movie had the crowd cheering so loud during the midnight showing.

By having to fight for the role, I believe it made him more determined to give a better performance and not simply go through the motions like a lot of other actors tend to do in these type of films.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

RDJ's battle with drug abuse makes him a risk when it comes to high dollar productions (insurance, and so on), so I could see that RDJ would have to fight for the role given that there are other alternatives if they passed on RDJ. But that's not to say RDJ isn't a talented actor, he is, he just has a lot of past baggage that requires him to do more than someone with less baggage for roles he really wants.

So, his credit rating (in Brazil Terms) is low enough to damage actual talent perception.
I'll assume suits on set keeping vigil.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

Don't think you need to assume suits on set but probably should assume random drug testing.

Very interesting when you consider that Downey improvised the sit-down press conference scene.

I read that there was quite a bit of improvising on the set when they were shooting, as Favreau wanted some funny choices in certain scenes to keep the energy level up in the film.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

Absolutely loved the IM movie which I saw last night.

RDJ is IM imo and he nailed the role perfectly.

I really liked how they kept introducing characters from the comics such as Jarvis or Shield.

I watched al of the credits to see about SLJ's cameo as Nick Fury, awesome

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

I also enjoyed the film. Very steady workman like structure to the movie which builds to its climax "I Am IronMan" cue music.

Perfect cast especially Gwennie and Leslie Bibb (yum yum).

Loved Stan Lee's little cameo, it was spot on.

This will make a great Blu-ray disc!!!

I didn't like that Jarvis was just a computer program, but I guess it would be too Batman in the year of Dark Knight to have another billionaire with a butler.

Even though the origin was different, it was a thrill when the agent revealed the final name of his agency.

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

Saw this over the weekend and thought it was great. Really gets the vibe right for a comic book movie - plenty of action, and lots of fun, but not at the expense of the dramatic tension. Also enjoyed the real-life pokes at defense contractors. Great cast, all given some interesting things to do (although Terence Howard could have been used more). As with Spider-Man in 2002, this could end up being the movie of the summer, beating out even Indiana Jones. (You will recall that Spider-Man was the top-grossing movie of 2002, beating out even Attack of the Clones.)

In any event, bring on the Blu-Ray and the sequel!

Re: *** Official IRON MAN Discussion Thread

Looks like this movie made about $50 million this weekend and beat out Speed Racer for the #1 spot.

Need for Speed? Nope, 'Iron Man' rules

Wow, it made over 120 million last weekend, then another 50 this weekend above Speed Racer. That's very impressive. I took my son and we enjoyed the movie quite a bit.
