Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

Well KryptonSite: Your Source For "Smallville" News And Information has posted some info about who is leaving and who will be joining the cast next season...

Michael Rosenbaum is definitely leaving the show. Although, its possible he will make guest appearances.

And here is about who is joining the cast...
Quote:
The network has announced two new characters that will be joining the cast of Smallville next season: the legendary, unstoppable Doomsday, and a female antagonist who will challenge Clark in ways never before imagined. Casting is underway for both roles.

Doomsday: In season eight, Clark will face his ultimate challenge with the appearance of the legendary, unstoppable destroyer Doomsday, who appears on “Smallville” for the first time. As comic book fans know, Doomsday is notorious for being the only character in the DC Comics universe to have killed Superman.

Female villain: Doomsday won’t be Clark’s only nemesis in the upcoming season. The executive producers are tight-lipped about a new female villain they will be introducing, but they can say she will be familiar to many fans and will set her sights on Clark in ways Lex never could. Intelligent, brilliantly manipulative, and dangerously sinister, our gorgeous new villain has one more weapon in her arsenal: Her mutual attraction with Clark may prove to be as deadly as kryptonite for him.

Seems that instead of introducing all these new characters i.e. The Legion, Doomsday etc, how about just wrapping up the story arc of making Clark Superman, I figure they can get an entire season from just that.

You're assuming, of course, this is the last season. We may think this is it, but I have my doubts based on the ratings and the CW's "strength" of schedule.

Besides, becoming Superman would take these guys half an episode to zip through.

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

I'm stoked as usual about the new season but i'm confused about Doomsday, wasn't he freakishly huge in the comics? It seems that outside of a total CGI character or someone with a glandular problem a normal sized human won't work for that role.

Please let this be the season where he becomes Supes! Not because i'm in a hurry for the show to end but because the anticipation is wearing on me, I want to see how they do it in the end and if Clark will don the suit.

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

I'm sure he won't resemble the comics Doomsday at all. They seem to be in the Nolan school of stripping the comic stuff out as much as possible to make it fit the real world, albeit with a lot less skill.

I don't think there's any way you'll be seeing anything like this on Smallville:

Also, I heard something about

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Jimmy marrying Chloe. Ugh, I hope not.

They've veered so far away from the traditional Jimmy and Lois now that they can't arrive at Clark as Superman and make it fit anything we've seen before. Maybe that's not a bad thing--kind of an Ultimate Superman--but it's one reason it'll be easier for them to end the show without us actually seeing him as Superman. They don't want to have to deal with Superman landing in Lex's office and having Lex say, "Who are you? I've never seen anyone who looks like you before in my life!"

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

I'm glad that you edited your post, Greg because I was coming here to bring up that very point about Doomsday, he's not even a man but a gargantuan monster so I didn't consider the Nolan approach (good term to describe what this show does BTW) for Doomsday even though I knew about it.

How are they going to make a human being work in that role and still have him resemble in even the most rudimentary way Doomsday? I guess if they hire some hulking brute like Kane to play him, paint him grey, glue some spikes on him he could pass lol.

This is very interesting.

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

Smallville has always been an "Ultimate" version of the Superman mythos, where you start with the proposition that baby Kal-El landed on earth around roughly 1986, and you get to see how he spends his high school years as Clark Kent into his young adult years before taking on the public mantle of Superman. There are winks to adventures and situations ahead for him based on previous incarnations of Superman (and other heroes and villains) on the show, but don't expect so much shoe-horning into the adult adventures of Superman of what we have seen from the comics.

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

John, I honestly don't know anything about Doomsday, so I don't know what they could do with him. It seems like a weird character to introduce right now, but I'll keep an open mind. I want to see what the show's like under new ownership (though, isn't it pretty much unchanged since Miller and Gough were off doing stuff half the time anyway). Geoff Johns getting involved might be good, especially since the Legion harkens back to classic Superboy.

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

I'm also curious as to how they're going to get around the opening of the next season without anything involving Michael Rosenbaum? He was pretty pivitol in the last few minutes of last season and so him suddenly not being there (or more accurately shown) under the rubble of the fortress seems really strange to me.

Yeah. Superman's fight with Doomsday in the comics didn't end well for either of them....

Re: Smallville Season 8 (Spoilers)...

At Dragon Con, I attended a panel headed by Michael Rosenbaum, and he's got a full head of hair, and if he did show up on the first episode (for any residual clean-up scene) of this new season, they'd put a bald cap on him. So, I don't expect him to show up on the show anymore, but you never know.

I also ended up at a panel with Phil Morris (John Jones AKA Martian Manhunter), and the only thing about the upcoming season he would offer was this small nugget:

He was in wardrobe, and one of the guys who's been working on the show from the beginning in that department just offered (paraphrased), out of the blue, "I think this is shaping up to be our best season yet.". So I'm hoping that Lex's absence will open up the show and give Clark a lot more diversity in the settings and characters he has to deal with on the show.

I'm closing this thread as it was just to whet the appetite of this upcoming season for Smallville fans. New thread for season 8 will be started soon.
