I think the Hulk being the villain in the Avengers movie is more likely - or, perhaps, the initial reason for the Avengers banding together.

Get the Hulk in the right situation, and he's the villain, especially since he's still pretty much being portrayed as the near-feral, almost inarticulate monster. Just say he's gotten a nasty extra jolt of gamma rays and he can't revert back to Banner.

Nikki Finke's name befits her.

Don't believe everything Hollywood gossip mongers print... they're in it to get attention for themselves and provoke controversy more than report facts.

Favreau is a class act and deserves all the accolades he's gotten for his creative vision on this series, and Robert Downey Jr. is a gem.

I was like, "Wow, we're forming a team. We're going to that guy and you're forming a team." That's clearly not the day after "Iron Man" ended. Where does it fit in the time continuum? I don't want to just ignore it or do what the comic books have done. I guess you could do what Marvel has said: "It's an alternate universe." They've gotten away with that one for a couple of decades, but how do you make all that work within that world? Because I think it is fun and I think that "Hulk" was successful in keeping a tone that did not seem inconsistent with our film, and certainly with Robert being in there. But we definitely now have a lot of things [to consider]. Look, I come out of improv, and in improv you say, "Okay, give me a suggestion of a place, a line of dialogue –" and here it's like, "Okay. Give me three scenes that I have to incorporate into my next movie." So it's a challenge. What's refreshing is that I don't go back and it's not like you have a studio executive who could care less, like, "I don't give a sh*t. Just make whatever, whatever tests best." In this case you have Kevin Feige who's like, "How are we going to solve this puzzle?" It's like a Rubik's Cube to them as well. Just all that brainpower addressing something makes you come up with interesting solutions. So we have a pretty good game plan. Then there are conversations that I've been having with them about "The Avengers" too. Remember, with "Avengers" you're not just dealing with tech. You're dealing with inter-dimensional portals and all the sh*t that makes you jump the shark if you don't handle it right. So we were very restrained in how we used our superhero-ism in our movie and we did that by keeping it all tech based. Then "Hulk" went a little the same way. It's still kind of tech-based. You get to Cap and you say, "Okay, he was frozen in that thing –" and it's like, "Okay, I could maybe buy that, with the super-soldier thing." Then you get into Thor and it's like, "Okay, well now..." and so how do you make that all feel like it's in the same world as our movie is? That's going to be the challenge moving forward.

I thought Favreau did a good job but he is starting to sound like a wuss regarding the Thor/Mandarin/magic thing

I think he's correctly addressing it. The other movies are from a tech standpoint, then all a sudden some viking comes from no where and the audience is like "um what?". Makes sense. And thor sucks, leave him out of it, will not work, imo.

It's a little unfortunate that Favreau is using Fraction's Iron Man as a source. It's a pretty crap book. A lot of it's probably not Fraction's fault, since he's obviously being told to make the comic seem like a continuation of the movie, even though the continuity and tone really conflict with the vastly superior (and, sadly, canceled) Carnivale Iron Man. But, the book is terrible:

Thor is one of the greatest heroes in the Marvel Universe. He controls weather better than Storm of the X-Men, dimension hops as easily as walking, and can go toe to toe with The Hulk, Hercules and the strongest characters out there and give as good as he gets. His father Odin is the King of the Northern gods and according to the Marvel Universe Handbooks from the '80's, Odin has more power than the god heads of the other pantheons, including Zeus of the Olympians (Greeks). And Thor's mother (in the Marvel Universe) is the elder goddess the greeks call Gaia, Mother Earth herself.

Characters like Thor and Dr. Strange offer a good counterbalance to the technology that creates Hulk, the Iron Man armor and Captain America's shield. And with all the mutant powers they showcased in the X-Men movies, how is it that hard to look at Thor and see him as out of place?

I'd have a few other choice things to add, but I think I made my main point here. Thor rules!

Marvel announced Iron Man 3 today.

Not a big surprise, but it does make one a little nervous about a Spidey 3 situation happening again. Not that there's any reason for pessimism right now.

My question is.. will there be much hunger for an Iron Man 3 once The Avengers is released? It was the same question I had if they actually went along with the Justice League movie.. it's spreading your character too thin by putting him in an ensemble piece and then expect people to pay to see a solo again.. cheapens the character in a way.

No offense to Cheadle, but that plain sucks. After so many Batmen, and the recent Holmes/Gyllenhaal change, I wish more of these films were consistent in the casting like the "Spider-Man" films have been so far.

(Yes, despite all the fanboy crap about wanting certain actors from that franchise replaced, I'm totally against that sort of thing.)

Sadly, Marvel is developing a reputation for doing this of this sort. If not for the backlash they received when news was "leaked" that they weren't that big on bringing back Fav to direct the sequel (because they didn't want to give him more money), "Iron Man II" would be in the hands of another director.

Howard wanted a modest raise for the sequel (as most actors and actresses get when a movie is as successful as "Iron Man" was), but the studio wasn't that receptive to that idea. Anyhoo, this opened the door for Cheadle who is a great actor on top of being "cheaper" to sign.

This is just the nature of the business and both sides (Marvel and Howard) parted without any real hard feelings. I am happy for Cheadle though. The guy is an amazing talent and I'm anxious to see his take on the role, especially considering he'll be donning the armor of War Machine.

It's funny that he'd be cheaper. You would think that Don Cheadle would be more expensive as he is a more well known celebrity and has had bigger success at the Box Office than Howard.

I'd imagine that as well.

I don't like this at all, I can live with casting replacements if done well-- unlike this. Cheadle is a fine actor but he's undoubtedly going to be a different character than Howard's version, a character that matched with Jr.'s Stark perfectly.

Count me as another who prefers continuity in film sequels(with the exception of Katie Holmes). I certainly admire Cheadle as an actor and I'm sure he'll do a fine job in IM 2, but Howard should've been allowed to play the role IMHO.
