Movies to show my 9 year old?

Hello,
new to the forum but a big movie fan. I have a 9 year old step son who I have a regular movie night with every Friday night. We have been doing this for more than a year and a half. We have a regular schedule of watching a cartoon, then some trailers for upcoming movies we might watch, then our feature. I began with showing him some more kiddie stuff and then branched into movies I liked when I was younger(I'm 33). He is very open to all kinds of films-sci-fi(love Star Wars of course), adventure, even old black and whites. Below is a list of most of the movies I have shown him over the past year and a half. Starting to run out of ideas, so was hoping to get some suggestions if possible? 50s, 60s, 70s, 80s, 90s to the present all fair game. He has enjoyed all these films so maybe these will help determine some others people on this board might think he'd like. thanks for any suggestions! Trying to keep my Netflix queue stocked...

Thank you good call on these! I forgot that I showed him Time Bandits and he liked it, so Munchausen is a good logical next step. And he'd love Red October too! Putting them in the queue now!

Wow, great lists here with TONS of good stuff! Many of my personal favorites(Duel, The Birds, The Last Voyage, Breaking Away, Quatermass and the Pit...)

You guys were right on the mark with a lot of these suggestions as I was considering many of them already(Buckaroo Banzai, Robinson Crusoe on Mars, Forbidden Planet, Great Train Robbery, Uncle Buck, The Wolf Man, Princess Bride, Galaxy Quest, Abbot and Costello meet Frankenstein)
So many others I hadn't thought of! Fantastic!

Two not quite so obvious suggestions:

HOPE AND GLORY
MY LEFT FOOT.

These aren't necessarily though of as kids' films, but my kids loved them. When you watch HOPE AND GLORY with a child you really get to experience it through a child's eyes and you realize what a brilliant and unique film it is.

That is awesome! Has he seen the Pirates of the Caribbean movies? My 3 year old daughter loves "Jack the Sparrow" and we watch these a lot along with Lady and the Tramp.

In my haste, I forgot to list one obvious title:

MIGHTY JOE YOUNG (1949) --any nine-year-old would love this, just for the tug-o-war scene between Joe and the wrestlers!

Also:

THE VALLEY OF GWANGI (1969) --cowboys vs. dinosaurs!

And if he likes "caper" movies, try TOPKAPI (1964), THE ITALIAN JOB (1969) and DANGER: DIABOLIK (1968).

If, from his exposure to FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE, GOLDFINGER and THUNDERBALL, he's becoming a budding James Bond fan, introduce him to James Coburn in OUR MAN FLINT (1966) and IN LIKE FLINT (1967). My nephews are 6 and 8 and they love watching Toby Tyler, Old Yeller, Savage Sam and ET. As for cartoons, they love Pluto, Tom & Jerry, Loony Tunes and Popeye (The Fleischer ones, especially with Swee' Pea).

I'll second the classic cartoon recommendations. My son loves George of the Jungle, Looney Tunes, etc.

Also, while I know you're focusing on movies, there are also some older tv shows you might want to introduce him to at some point.

My son loves I Love Lucy, The Brady Bunch, The Partridge Family, The Twilight Zone, Home Improvement, MASH and others.

If he's into sci-fi & sorcery, you can't go wrong with "He-Man & The Masters Of The Universe" as a cartoon choice. That shows was a favorite of mine as a child of the 80's. Ditto for the "Masters of the Universe" movie starring Dolph Lundgren.

Great suggestion to which I would add, everythinig ever made by Pixar.

They simply have never made a bad film and most of them are instant classics. The Incredibles and Monsters, Inc. are probably my favorites.

And if your stepson likes The Goonies, try the lesser-known Explorers, a terrific film that inexplicably got lost at the box office and never found the audience it deserved, Two other overlooked films (which may have been mentione above, I didn't have time to read all the lists) while I'm thinking about them: The Rocketeer (he'll love it for the action, adventure and the cool rocket pack, you'll love it for Jennifer Connelly in white satin) and The Last Starfighter.

Trying not repeat any, here's some more. Saw a lot of these well before I as 9, so some might not be entirely age-appropriate. Some harder PGs are included as well as a stray PG-13s and Rs. A couple of these may be pretty difficult to find on Region 1 DVD, but I loved watching them on HBO as a kid.

You've already got one of my old favorites The Sea Gypsies (aka Shipwreck). You could try the other related films: The Wilderness Family and its sequels and Mountain Family Robinson. Most seem to be available rather cheaply on DVD.

Super Fuzz (aka Supersnooper). I know there are a bunch of versions of this film around, in various regions, but I don't know that there is an optimal version. Too bad.
