Hard Drive Life Span

After having a couple of DVD's go bad on me recently I started thinking I would like to back them up. There are several things I have that would be difficult to replace if they went bad or got damaged. I have a 250 GB My Book that I use for my home computer. I would like to purchase a 1 TB drive. I would basically store all my DVD's on this drive and then not use it. My question is how long would a drive last if it wasn't being used?

Re: Hard Drive Life Span

as long as you protect it from electrical surges and didn't physically damage it - i.e. dropping it,moisture etc. It should last quite sometime, probably decades. The interface would be obsolete before you'd have to worry about the HD data IMO.
