Beanie Babys, pretty worthless as of April '08 I guess.

my wife and i were going through stuff
in the attic and we found
a few boxes of beanie babys we got
from her mom about 6 years ago.

looking on ebay and a few other sites it seems
these are pretty worthless now.

hardly any sell on ebay for more then a few dollars.
actually it looks like about 1 out of 40
listings actually finish with a sale.

so we have maybe 100 of these things and i was going to
put them on ebay but that looks like a pointless idea,
unless i put a crazy story on the auction like
a revenge against the mother in law story.

so has anyone recently tried selling these things?

i would like to move them and looks like
the only way is for me to go to
a collector show and try and sell them.

Best thing to do is hold on to them for now. Collectibles tend to cool off in value when people's interest in them fades due to 'the next big thing'. Once they get popular again, you'll end up beating back potential buyers with a stick. It will probably take years though - perhaps even decades.....such is the collectibles market.

I've never understood the notion of collecting mass-manufactured consumer products, unless you're cashing in on the craze, or long-term collector. Beanie Babys are a fun toy per se. But why would they be a "collectible"?

I don't even know that TonyD was collecting them -- might just be over-generous gift from his mother-in-law that wound up collecting dust.

Hopefully you can dispose of them simply and profitably.

I have no idea if it'll work, but it sounds good to me.

We have about 50 and probably 30 came from the mother-in-law. Ours are not in perfect shape because we let the kids enjoy them.

I think some collectibles have an intrinsic value that is apart from the collectible part of it. Something that contains gold has some intrinsic value. An ugly diamond ring still has a diamond. Beanie Babys, IMHO, don't have much intrinsic value, you are at the mercy of the collectible market.

Much of the value of a collectible comes from rarity, and Beanie Babys aren't rare, at least today. Would the first issue of Superman be worth much if most of those published were available in good condition?

Wait 100 years, and check the price again

Unfortunately, beanie babies are not selling for the higher prices they use to, because now the newest craze of stuffed collectables is Webkinz. I remember back when beanie babies were selling for upwards of $2000 and now people cannot even give them away.

Most collectors I have spoken to said that they are slowly moving on from beanies to the new Webkinz. Webkinz started only two years ago, but already have a long list of retired animals. Currently the most popular Webkinz is the sherbet bunny (retired) and goes for upwards of $250 (that I have seen).

I am not a collector of stuffed animals myself. I do find the craze a bit interesting and find it very mind boggling as to why people spend so much money for these types of things, but I suppose it is all relative.

I actually know someone who collects beanie babies and has far more than she even has room for in her home. At one point it even became a financial problem for her and her family.

I'm certainly not against collecting. I collect vintage Star Wars toys-- the 3 3/4" figures, playsets, and vehicles. But I do so because of the intense nostalgia I have for these toys that I played with as a child-- not because of any monetary value they may or may not have. That's where I think people get into trouble. They get caught up in the latest craze and think a temporary price premium is always going to be there, or even go higher. They get visions of getting rich off these things.

People see old toys, etc. with high value and think these new items will also be worth money down the road. However, today, consumer items like these are almost made for collectors. There are probably 100 people buying these things to keep for every 1 person there is buying it to play with (or whatever it's intended purpose is).

Older items are more valuable partially because "way back then" relatively few people thought of "stashing" something away for future value. Today, it seems, nearly everyone does.

If one is going to collect, one should do it because of a connection with the item, not because it's the latest fad.

Yes.
Short version is that Maria was a rescued exotic cat. I had a 700+ SF enclosure built that she resided in. She was pretty and had something between a purr and a hum.

ok then for that matter who is anyone to question what people like to collect.

just like movies, what's good for some may not e for others.

people collect spoons, thimbles, paper clips.
if they collect them to save, display,stick in the attic or sell, who cares.

I agree with you. Perhaps I didn't word it right. I'm not questioning what people like to collect, just the reasons why.

If I told you I'm collecting Beanie Babies to fund my son's college education, wouldn't you consider that foolish? I would. That's all I'm getting at. Some people have unrealistic expectations. I've heard stories of people spending tens of thousands of dollars on Beanie Babies-- money they really couldn't afford to spend-- thinking they were going to get rich. Now they have a pile of stuffed animals they couldn't give away. But if someone spends thousands on Beanie Babies because they truly love the animals and have no delusions about getting rich off of them, more power to them.

I'm just saying, collect what makes you happy, not what you think will make you rich.

Sounds like your brother likes to flip wives as some people flip houses!

I collect patches and stickers from all my hiking/biking/kayaking pursuits.. My car is plastered with them and I tell people that I have stickers because I can't sew.

well as i stated in the very first post of this topic I started, my mother in law gave us about 100 of these things a few years ago.

and honestly, who am i or you or anyone to to condemn anyone for anything they choose to collect.

i did buy maybe 4 or 5 myself becuase i liked them, thought they were cute, or whatever i just wanted them.

sorry - didn't mean to offend but I did not condemn them - I merely threw a light hearted comment out, which I will withdraw. I am related, by marriage, to some "collectors" and I just find it a curious and interesting topic - what is it about an object that appeals to someone enough that they decide to collect that item, especially in quantity. I am sure you have run into or heard of curious "collections". Like the guy on American Idol this year that had a bag of "fingernails" he has been collecting. Good luck with the effort!

I don't see anyone condeming anyone else. I don't know how to say it any different-- I don't criticize what some people collect, I just question the reasons why. Very different.
