apolgize for my first post being one needing help with my Onkyo 805!!

Well folks, hello to the newest home theater addict on the block. Only problem is, I'm broke! So broke I could only afford an 805 and so far only have my fronts and center channel. (going peice by peice). That said, I'm having a bit of trouble trying to figure how to tie my television into my setup considering I have no cable box. Only the basic old school screw into the back of your television type cable.

Trial, error, and alot of headaches until 3am managed to get my wii, xbox360, and ps3 all hooked up with audio but I'm at a loss at what to do with the television and how to hook it up. Currently I have the audio working via optical however I would like to be able to hook the tv up to the receiver so I can do all the switching from the receiver and put down the multiple remotes deal. That said, my television is a VIZIO VW42L HDTV10A.
Assuming it is possible, I would like to bring up one more problem that I could use help with. Via the hidden menu you are able to set upscaling and it was in fact a determining factor in purchasing the reciever I purchased. Problem is, when I try to upscale my wii, it changes the aspect ratio to 4:3 and I have been completely unable to fix the problem. Its either correct aspect ratio and 480p or the wrong aspect ratio but 720p. I'm shooting for 720p upscaled with 16:9 via the wii, and hopefully if you guys can direct me to hooking up the cable tv.. that as well!!

hope this isnt asking too much, im tryin tryin tryin to learn!

If you've got audio going from the Vizio to the 805, what else are you looking for? Receivers can only switch line level audio/video signals. IOW, to only use one video input on the Vizio, which I'm guessing is what you want, you'll need a tuner (cable box/sat box/vcr) in front of the 805 to create a line level signal.

That said, right now you're using two inputs on the Vizio. CATV and an HDMI input. Why not program a couple of macros into the 805's remote to switch the Vizio's input when you want to change sources?

There's a reason that video upconversion menu is hidden. I've seen your issue mentioned before (not a gamer myself), apparently it's a limitation of the video processing chip used in the 805. However, since you're using a fixed resolution display (all LCD/DLP/Plasma qualify), it has to scale (up & down) any signal received to its native resolution (720p). So, just let the 805 pass the Wii as 480p and the Vizio will do the upconversion. It's likely as good or better at scaling than the 805, even if it could get the Wii's aspect ratio correct.

I'm afraid thats not the case. If it goes in via component (wii) and comes out via hdmi, it comes out 480p and looks plenty ugly. If I set it to upscale it comes out 720p and looks very very very much better. Although at the cost of it being surrounded by black because it changes it to 4:3.

no one else has an onkyo and a wii eh?

Well, I have Wii and Yamaha. Via component to my Yamaha (Yamaha does the upscaling to 1080p) and from there to my TV via HDMI (1080p Sony). Works just fine, it seems (I just got my new receiver, so I still have to "test" various things - also the quality of Wii).

I can choose some options from the Yamaha "upscaling" menu (e.g. upscale to e.g. full 1080p OR I can just choose "through" and my TV does the upscaling) and I can choose the "aspect ratio" ("through" won´t change the aspect ratio, but there are also 16:9/Smart/Zoom). I guess with Wii, the aspect ratio can be a bit tricky, since e.g. the old retro-games were originally in 4:3 etc.

I guess I can also choose "through", and let the TV set-up handle the aspect ratio-issues..

Probably didn´t help, but just thinking out loud here..

There's no easy answer for you. You need a better scaler somewhere in the chain.

Currently, it sounds like you like the scaling job of the 805 better than the Vizio's. However,from what I've read, the Faroudja chip used in the 805 makes the assumption that all 480p material is 4:3, not 16:9. Hence the letter and pillar boxing you're getting with forced upscaling. Just speculation, but it could be that the Faroudja chip is simply leaving the video from the Wii untouched and "adding" the extra pixels to the black area. This would show the Vizio its native resolution without actually scaling the video image itself.

Jari's 1800 uses an Anchor Bay video chip that's probably comparable to the well received Silicon Optix Reon used in the 875/905 as well as numerous HD-DVD/BluRay players.

Yes, v1800 uses ABT1010 ( Anchor Bay » Products » Semiconductors » ABT1010 ) for scaling and iChip for deinterlacing.

My Toshiba XE1 uses Silicon Optix "Reon-VX HQV" ( HQV - Hollywood Quality Video Processing for HD : HQV Products TEST - also used in some Onkyo´s A/V receivers) chip and not sure what PS3 is using, but at least Toshiba and PS3 are pretty much "equal" in upscaling to my eyes (perhaps PS3 is slightly sharper). Today I played a bit more "Mario Kart Wii" via v1800 (it did the upscaling) and it looked pretty good.

v1800 won´t upscale via HDMI, so my PS3 and Toshiba does the upscaling with SD DVDs at the moment. Can´t really complain.

Just guessing here but I wonder if the 720p image looks better only because it's smaller than the 480p's full screen image.

To help figure out what's happening, I would try hooking up the Wii directly to the Vizio & see what happens.

As for the TV cable issue: I agree with Brent, just get a VCR (thrift shops are CRAMMED with them nowadays ) and use its tuner & audio/video output into the Onkyo.
