For those interested MIB is coming to BD June 17, specs TBA Monday

Blu-ray.com - Men In Black Announced for Blu-ray

It's no LOA or Kwai but I enjoy it enough for a purchase.

This is a fun film. Look forward to owning it on BD.

Just...keep us away from the sequel....

Finally? IMO, Sony has been one of the best companies when it comes to HD..

Well, to each on his own of course.

I probably pick this up. It´s a sci-fi comedy that actually works.

I'll probably pick this up because it is a fun movie, with a lot of rewatchability, and fairly kid-friendly to boot. As for the sequel, I thought MIB II was one of the worst movies I've ever seen. I distinctly remember my wife being pregnant with our first child and near her due date when we saw that howler. Our friends and I would periodically lean over and tell her "Anytime you want to go into labor is fine with us".

[threadhijack]That said, I am actually looking forward to the potential Blu-ray Disc release of So I Married an Axe Murder more. There's been some foregin release rumblings it may be head to BD, and it would make sense to tie it in with Mike Myer's The Love Guru.[/threadhijack]

If true, they better fix the audio drop out when he says "Sense of humor." It's been "Sense of hu___." on all video releases.

Good thing I never bought this on DVD. This should be an unbelievable disc.

I'll never understand the profound and common hate for the sequel--personally, I think it's damn sight funnier than the first film and, as far as the rest of it, it's cut from cloth so similar to the first film (in terms of tone, effects and silly throwaway plot) that I can't grasp what's apparently so offensively different about it...

Well, it has been a long time since I've seen it, but I'm not about to take the bullet of watching it again just so I can 'speak more intelligently' on the subject. That being said, I equate Men in Black II to Airplane II: The Sequel, in that, yeah, they're basically the same movie as their original, but 'the magic' or 'freshness' is gone. It is a rehash that feels like it is exactly that.

A lot of what I felt was wrong with it had to do with either Tommy Lee Jones' lack of screen time, or the change in dynamic between Tommy Lee Jones and Will Smith.

Hmm, personally, I felt the dynamic swap between the two leads was rather inspired. That being said, I'm willing to concede the arguability that MiB II may have come at the cost of narrative freshness, but it more than makes up for it in belly laughs, IMO...

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I have to join Paul's "MIB2 sucks club".

Like Ghostbusters 2 it retains the same cast, concept, etc, except in both they seemed to be a quick cash grab. They were unfunny, uninspired and lifeless. I remember not laughing once during MIB2, didn't even crack a smile. It got so tortuous after a while that I was constantly looking at the time display trying to gauge how much more of this turd I had to endure.

But for those who enjoy it I'm not trying to convince you otherwise or that you're "wrong". I have my share of films I enjoy that most others despise.

Welcome to the club, dues are free! I concur that Ghostbusters 2 is another excellent comparison that helps get to the heart of my 'issues' with MIB2.

As for enjoying films that others despise, I hear you. I just watched, and loved Flash Gordon (1980) for the zillionth for God's sake. I even showed it to my 5-year-old son, compounding the sacrilidge.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I own the "Superbit" version of MIB (and it upscales quite nicely); but I might consider the BD if it has decent extras. (The "Superbit" version had no extras at all; and the previous release had copius extras, but the transfer was riddled with edge enhancement.)

As for the sequel: I picked up the two-disc "Special Edition" used for $3.99 recently and thought the movie was worth every penny. Heck, the "Post Office" scene alone was worth $3.99!! (Granted, I would have *never* paid more than five dollars, though ...)

That's one of my guilty pleasures too. I recorded it off UniversalHD recently and watched it with my 4 year old daughter who loved it. I feel a little bad for warping a young mind.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I hope they can include both Sonnenfeld's original solo LD commentary and the tete-a-tete with Tommy Lee Jones (who sounds like he had a terrible cold when they recorded it).

I lost the original DVD with the animated commentary track. Did it refuse to run in 16x9 mode like Ghostbusters?

If you didn't cough milk out of your nose laughing at this exchange:

Kevin Brown/K: Does that come standard?

Agent J: Actually it came with a black dude, but he kept getting pulled over.

...then I just don't know what to say. I laughed 'til I ached.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I like Men in Black II, my only problem was that it was to short IMO - I loved Ghostbusters II also.

So I hope to add both Ghostbusters II and Men in Black II to my Blu-ray library in the future.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

MIIB (as identified in both poster art and the DVD box art), is certainly the weaker of the two, but it does have its moments. I initially bought a used copy just to have a copy of The Chubb-Chubbs. THAT's a special feature they should port over from the original release.

Here's the extras list:

* Telestrator Commentary with Director Barry Sonnefeld and Tommy Lee Jones (I wonder if this is a Bonus View PiP commentary)
* Technical Commentary with Barry Sonnenfeld, Rick Baker, and Industrial Light & Magic Team
* Extended and Alternate Scenes
* Metamorphosis of Men In Black
* Visual Effects Scene Deconstructions
* Visual Effects Scene Deconstructions Technical Commentary
* Character Animation Studies
* Storyboard Comparisons
* Conceptual Art Gallery
* Scene Editing Workshop
* Production Photo Gallery
* "Men In Black" music video starring Will Smith and Mikey
* Men In Black Theatrical Trailer
* Men In Black Teaser Trailer
* Intergalatic Pursuit: The Men In Black Multi-Player Trivia Game (this is BD-Live/online-capable and multiplayer)
* Frank the Pug (BD-Live/online-capable "Frank the Dog Advice Generator where Frank will dish out advice on topics of career, health, money and romance.")

OK ... I'm in!
This appears to be an easy upgrade from the featureless "Superbit" iteration of the movie ...

If that list is comprehensive, it looks like what's missing from the SD Limited Edition and Deluxe Edition releases are the original 1997 "making of" featurette, the featurettes "Creatures - From Concept To Completion" and "MIIB Secret Files" and the itty-bitty teaser for MEN IN BLACK II. Pretty good loss ratio (and I wouldn't be surprised if the '97 featurette and "Creatures" do, in fact, turn up on the Blu-ray), but it's a shame and not necessary that anything has to go.

All in all, a respectable list of extras in and of itself.

Both Chubb-Chubbs shorts are included on the Surf's Up Blu-Ray.

Yeah, I have to agree with you there. I think I've owned both DVD incarnations of it, so might as well make it the trifecta: plain-jane SD-DVD, Superbit and now BR. It's always good for a laugh although it's ALWAYS on TV...in fact, it's probably on right now if you turn on your TV.

While not as much as the first one, I rather enjoy MiB2. It has some good lines and it's always nice to see Lara Flynn Boyle in a low cut get-up.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I never saw MiB2. Wasn't it rushed into production in anticipation of an SAG strike?

imdb.com says it will next air on TV on TBS on both 4/17 and 4/18.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

I would like to know if we will get lossless on this release or not? If so what flavor of lossless will it be? DTS-MA, Dolby THD or PCM? Granted this is Sony so I would not hold my breath for DTS-HD MA even though the DVD version did receive a DTS track in the past. I firgure that it will be ether be Dolby THD or PCM track judging on recent Blu-ray releases.

But has anyone heard what audio track MIB will come with?

According to HiDef Digest....Dolby THD.

Sony Sets Specs, BD-Live for 'MIB' Blu-ray | High-Def Digest

Was hoping for PCM.

Re: Men in Black - Blu-Ray release June 17

Ahh..... Frank the Pug. The sole reason I tolerate MIB2. He's funny as hell. This release is a no brainer. Everyone should have MIB in thier movie library. Blu-ray HD to boot. Does it get any better?
