Re: Looking for some great audio sound help?

Hi Mathew, welcome to HTF! The most important question.. what is your budget? A mid to high end surround speaker system can range anywhere from $5,000 to $25,000, or many times that.

What items are you budgeting for? For instance:

- 5.1 speakers or 7.1 speakers?
- A/V Receiver or separates (pre-pro and poweramp)
- Speaker cabling

Is the system primarily for movies, sports, television, gaming, music?

Do you prefer in-wall speakers, on-wall speakers, or for your surrounds to be on stands? Is your room pre-wired?

Have you budgeted for a video system (TV or Front Projector), Blu-Ray Player, Universal Remote, A/V stand, seating, professional installation, calibration?

Re: Looking for some great audio sound help?

Im am mostly looking to spend somewhere around 8 thousand total.
I already have the tv and the blue ray player. Im looking to get some great sound for gaming, music, and movies. I was thinking of going with 7.1. I am not sure to go with a a/v separates. I am fairly new to the home theater scene.

Thanks again

Re: Looking for some great audio sound help?

Don't take our advice on speakers, instead go and audition for yourself. Speakers are very subjective, your ears won't lie to you.

Bring with you 3 or 4 of your favorite CD's, as well as some DVD's. I would start by auditionning speakers from manufacturers such as Paradigm, B&W, Monitor Audio, KEF, Martin Logan, Vienna Acoustics, Focal/JMLabs.

On an $8,000 budget my personal choice would be Paradigm Studio Series:

Paradigm Studio 100 fronts
Paradigm CC-690 center
Paradigm ADP-590 surrounds
SVS PB13-Ultra subwoofer
Denon AVR-4308CI receiver

You could easily purchase for under $8,000 including taxes. I feel you will get far more value by investing in a strong 5.1 system than building a full 7.1 system. But again, don't take my advice, go and audition! Let us know what you find

Re: Looking for some great audio sound help?

I second the Paradigm recommendation. I have a pair of Studio 60's with the matching center, and I could not be happier with them. I think the 100's suggested retail is around 2000.00. I think you might get them a little cheaper. The thing that I really like about mine, is that they don't seem to add or take anything away. When a good piano part comes on, I can close my eyes and see the piano, if you know what I mean. There are a lot of good speakers out there. Listen to as many as you can. One of the deciding factors for me was, the shop I bought mine at was getting a new set in. So mine were basically half off. Could not pass them up at the price they were selling them for.

Re: Looking for some great audio sound help?

The Polk LSi series is really nice. (I would stay with an SVS or Epik subwoofer though)

The sound is very laid back (to much so for some tastes) but they are excellent for music and movies. They do require decent amplification, but with your budget, that should not be a problem....
