Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

What's it like? Are they in costume like their original characters, or is it stripped down to more of an Alias type of thing? Superpowers or no?

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

going from memory... costumes - No... Powers - Yes.

I really enjoyed every episode of the series. And is a set the I plan on getting as soon as it is released. I wish I could remember more details for you... but only seen the episodes 1 time.. when they originally aired. But sure others here can tell you more.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

I remember seeing a few episodes from this show back in 2002 but definitely not all thirteen. Does it end on a cliffhanger or not? If it does, I'm not getting it, if it doesn't, I might consider. I remember being impressed by Dina Meyer's acting and also liking Mia Sara and Rachel Skarsten.

While I definitely be picking the show up. They really dropped the ball on the show. The closest they came to being close to the comics and being better was the last couple of episodes. This show also came out during the X-Men movies. So they kinda hyped up the meta-gene aspect and made it similar to X-men in some stories.

I was hoping they would have given the original un-aired pilot. Where Harley was played by a different actress.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

I only got a few episodes when it originally aired and liked what I saw, will buy this definitely.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

I'll be blind buying this one since I didn't get a chance to watch it when it originally aired. Looks interesting though.

Good thing they didn't announce this release yesterday.....probably no one would believe it.

I saw one episode, and I'll be buying the set.

I saw one episode and won't be buying the set. This show had ZERO respect for its source material.

hmmmm.... I guess it is a good thing for me that I never seen any of the source material.

I agree. This show, IMO, was horrendous, but there are many people who like it, so for those, I am happy they are getting this set.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

Whiperintherain - The half-season does not end on a cliff-hanger. However, the resolution of the ongoing sub-plot does feel a bit rushed.

I understand that the producers found out about the mid-season cancellation in time to have the writers wrap up the various story arcs, but they only had 1-2 episodes left in which to do so.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

The press release says the picture will be 4:3 and the sound mono.

I understand that the original US broadcast ratio was 4:3, but here in the UK CNX originally transmitted it in letterboxed widescreen.

The widescreen composition looked pretty good to me. However, it is possible that the UK broadcaster pulled a "Buffy" on us and used a non-approved format.

I'd be interested to hear if anybody can confirm the makers' preference to have the DVD released in 4:3 fullframe, despite their shooting early seasons of Smallville in 16:9 at the same time.

Which press release makes those claims? The press release at Birds of Prey DVD news: Press Release for Birds of Prey - The Complete Series | TVShowsOnDVD.com make no claims about the picture or sound at all. Also the show was shown in the US in 1.78 ratio not 1.33.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

The cover art makes it look like Underworld III: Birds of Prey.

Yep, me neither. But it hardly seems necessary to honor comic books when comic book companies pay no attention to all to character's stories, changing their histories wily nily whenever they want to make a few more bucks. They also change how they look, their races, and their costumes a lot.

Then Underworld ripped it off, that's the original advertising art for the show.

Incorrect...

it was shown on the WB in widescreen/lbx
it was shown on SPACE (Canada) in widescreen/lbx
it was shown on Showcase Action (Canada) in widescreen/lbx

I've got recordings of all three...

it was not been shown 4:3 in the US

Steve, I think he was referring to this new update Birds of Prey DVD news: Box Art & Release Date Change for Birds of Prey - The Complete Series | TVShowsOnDVD.com I hope this is not 1:33. Fullscreen blows and the show was in widescreen to begin with. Let's hope this is just a mistake.

I was referring to the original Warner announcement at Birds of Prey: The Complete Series from Warner Home Video on DVD - Full Screen. At the time, as you say, TVShowsOnDVD did not mention the aspect ratio. It was I (and possibly others) that pointed it out to that website, and the news item there has now been updated.

As I indicated, I don't live in the States, but it was a usually-reliable person over there who that told me that BoP was originally broadcast in 4:3 within the USA. I am extremely happy to learn otherwise, as it increases the hope that the news release was in error.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

It was definitely broadcast in widescreen letterboxed format in the US. I just pulled out my old recordings and took a look. Thankfully the DVD's are being released because somehow the audio got messed up when I transfered them from VHS to DVD-R some time back.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

Is it coming out in widescreen?

TVShowsOnDVD is saying widescreen while Amazon and WHV are saying fullscreen.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

I've noticed a number of errors in press releases over the years. I would imagine that this is in its intended aspect ratio (which is apparently 1.78) and the press release is basically a typo.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

No clarification yet on the aspect ratio? I'm assuming they accidently used the AR and sound option of the included webisodes instead. I hope that's the explanation.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

Aspect ratio: Matted Widescreen (IOW, same as before: 1.33:1 )

They're now including the Unaired Pilot with Sherilyn Fenn.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

Well.....I guess that's that. A matted widescreen transfer just doesn't cut it these days. This will look absolutely like shit on a widescreen TV. Nope, not buying this....Warner just saved me some cash.

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

How would they even find dvd authoring software that would make a non-anamorphic transfer? Was there a time machine to the past involved?

Re: Birds of Prey: The Complete Series Announced!

it means they are taking the broadcast masters and not encoding 16:9.

HORSEPUCKY! This isn't released till JULY! Light the torches, get the pitchforks! DAVID! Who do we ... er... express our displeasure to!
