I agree that those are excellent movies but the first line of the article says "Classic movies like Bullit, Easy Rider, The French Connection, amongst others, are guy movies, but our list is a modern guide (past 20 years)."

My expectation is that except for a few in the top ten or so...most of the films on this list will be forgotten in a year or two.

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

All joking about "Thelma & Louise" aside, I have actually seen 39 of the movies on the list!

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

I took care of my bashing in my prior post, so now I can say that some of you guys are being a little too harsh in your dismissals. I did a quick rescan and I decided that I could argue the relative merits of at least 30 of those films - and I'd take the side that says they are 3.5 out of 5 stars or better. That not the highest praise one could offer, but it's an indicator that the list isn't full of suck. There's plentiful entertainment to be had from watching this list.

I also find it difficult to believe that so many of you have seen so few of the films, considering just how popular many of them are. HTF elitism? Or does the wife choose the films that you watch?

Without a doubt, that's a factor. Especially since I don't have a dedicated HT. My gear is part of my living room so it usually takes a special dispensation of sorts from my wife in order for my 17-year-old son and me to sit down and watch I Am Legend like we did this weekend. I'm still trying to figure out how to sneak in No Country for Old Men!

Heck...in fact, Pulp Fiction got watched when she was away for a conference and I knew I'd finally have some time alone!

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

I've seen 48 of them but this list is meaningless without Apocalypse Now and Deliverance.

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

I've seen 15. Have no particular desire to see the other 35.

I accept the claim that this is the MODERN LIST, but if these are the best they have been able to come up with in the past 20 years, heaven help us guys. Where are you when we really need you, John Wayne?

A list of 50 guy movies should be a list of THE guy movies; not just a portion of them. It is kind of like making a list of the best romantic comedies (released between February 23rd and February 25th of last year). Kind of limiting, huh?

Okay so I'm an older guy (56). Maybe I just don't like the style of the more recent films. Then again, maybe I have seen REAL GUY movies and wish these other folks could too.

Bond. Paul Bond.

The list only covers the last 20 years.

I did however like their list of the 50 hottest sportswomen.

No I like MAN movies, now if they retitled the list to 50 Movies all guys with small nuts should see before they die I might agree with that.

BTW not a knock on those that have seen these movies but the majority do not fit the movies I would think with the title of this thread

In your prior post you said you'd only seen 5 of the films in the list, so I'm not sure where you're drawing the lines. Can you cite an example of a film or type of film that is missing? Torture porn? Faces of Death? What? What diameter do my balls need to be to watch films from your list?

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

The list only covers the last 20 years.

OK, but I'd still choose films like Spy Game, Man on Fire, Memento, Enemy at the Gates, Minority Report, Enemy of the State, The Green Mile, Dark City, Ronin, Con Air, L.A. Confidential, Air Force One, The Rock, Crimson Tide, Apollo 13, Leon: The Professional, Jurassic Park, The Fugitive, A Few Good Men, Hard Boiled, Terminator 2, The Silence of the Lambs, The Hunt for Red October, Total Recall and others from the last 20 years before many on that list.

I kinda like the George Kaplan list.

I think Shawshank needs to be added, though.

Alot of those movies are what I thought would be on the list (The Rock and Con Air) and they're probably more fitting for a guy's movie list. Others are good movies (L.A. Confidential or A Few Good Men) but I don't see them making a list of guy's movies. Granted, my definition of guy's movies means that you generally, but not always, have to check your brain at the door and just enjoy a good time.

I've seen every movie on your list (except "Hard Boiled"). I never really thought of any of them as "guy movies".

I guess someone needs to define what makes a movie a "guy movie".

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

There are competing interests in the naming conventions being used. On the one hand the descriptions in the article seem to identify the list as being "guy movies" - extra helpings of testosterone and dirt. The title suggests something different. Movies that guys should see could be taken to include any number of films that are not obvious "guy movies".

Men With Guns is an example of a film that I think guys SHOULD see, but I wouldn't ever call it a "guy movie". I feel the same way about The Straight Story.

Good list which highlights my main problem with the original: It think the original is heavily skewed toward the hipster/metrosexual crowd (for lack of better term.

With a few exceptions (Heat, Unforgiven etc..), the guys in the original list just talk too damn much

While I can’t really speak for George, I’m guessing that if a list of the top 50 chick movies came out, we would both have seen a fair number.

Having seen chick movies does not disqualify me from admiring a pretty girl.

George is bringing some winners into the fray

Saving Private Ryan
We Were Soldiers
and I could go on

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

Never mind seen I own 45 of the 50, he shamelessly admitted. Though none of them are included in my top 20 favorites.

Guy Movies? Where's 2001? Lawrence of Arabia? Rear Window? Psycho? North by Northwest? Goldfinger? Dirty Harry? The Godfather? Jaws? The Omega Man? Raiders of the Lost Ark? Aliens? Kill Bill? Caligula? Showgirls? Battlefie[STOP IT STEVE!]

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

Steve - The list only goes back 20 years; hence a number of superior films are excluded.

I've seen 40 of the 50 and its an okay list, but the criteria for inclusion wasn't very clear and (like everyone else) I would have made some different choices.

For my money, no guy's film list would be complete without some films starring Lee Marvin - The Dirty Dozen, Emperor of the North Pole and Point Blank for instance.

- Walter.

Yes, but they were not made in the past 20 years. The list is only covering the past 2 decades...

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

No:
Black Hawk Down
Blade Runner
Big Trouble in Little China
True Romance
Not even any John Wayne movies?!?!?!
Not even the Swayze "classics" Road House or Red Dawn made the list...

Is this guy not past puberty yet?!?!?!

Edit: Alright didn't realize it was only a two decade list, you can take off the Duke but the rest remain even though Blade Runner and Red Dawn is borderline.

Re: 50 Movies All Guys Should See Before They Die

Just to be clear, the titles I listed were ones I thought were in the spirit of how "guy movies" were being defined by his list.
