FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Fox has just updated their classics "Coming Soon!:
STARS AND STRIPES FOREVER
Fritz Lang's MAN HUNT still and again
CHANDU THE MAGICIAN
DRAGONWYCK
DR. RENAULT'S SECRET
"A Box of RITZ Crackers"--presumably a collection of Ritz Bros. movies
THE TYRONE POWER Matinee Idol Collection (no titles mentioned)
They also mention THE BIG TRAIL and THE CARMEN MIRANDA COLLECTION. Also listed are THE SAND PEBBLES and BATMAN THE MOVIE in what I assume are Blue Ray editions.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Awesome!

I was starting to worry about Fox with the lack of updates in the "Coming Soon" section and the absence of anyone recieivng the "Frontier Marshall" disc.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Never have been able to see any of the Ritz Bros films.. those might be interesting.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

The downside is that "Boomerang" & "The Day The Earth Stood Still" seem to have completely vanished as well as the redemption form for "Frontier Marshall".

I wonder what's going on? I'm really anxious to see "Boomerang"

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Another big downside is that the two disc version that included both versions of The Robe is also gone !!!!

I'm sure TDTESS will be rereleased just in time for the remake.

I don't mean to sound like a grumpus...but where's "Cavalcade "? (All it did was win Best Picture Oscar) "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn"? "Viva Zapata!"? "Wild River"? "Wilson"? I mean, I'm happy with "Dragonwyck" (and at least they did update the website) but, as mentioned above, where's "Boomerang" for gooodness sake?

Oh, alright...I do mean to sound like a grumpus...but still

You can get more than enough (IMO) in The Three Musketeers (1939).

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

If you're still looking for Boomerang at this point, the prices on eBay are much cheaper (some are under the MSRP) than they used to be.

Currently there's only one auction on it. It's an unopened copy and is at 1 cent with about three days left. The seller has more than 40,000 positive feedback with 99.8% positive so it seems like he's a reputable dealer.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Well I think that, by october all of this titles, or at least most of them will be already be released. So we don't have to worry about some of our most desirable titles that haven't yet been announced.

Fox is relaing surprising me with its latest announcements, so I'm sure The Robe and TDTEST will eventually be available in theis special editions.

Dragonwyck and Man Hunt are long awaited titles in my list and the Power collection should be huge, as I reported in a specifc thread.
Stars and Stripes Forever suggests one of these alternatives: Or a new wave on the Marquee Musicals series or a Clifton Webb collection (Sitting Pretty would be awesome).

I am really happy with all these announcements and I will continue to support Fox with all of its classic releases, as I do with WB.

Ditto here. Really thrilled to have an idea of what is coming!

Not a fan of the Ritz Bros. but I love several of their films because of the great songs and singers like Tony Martin who get to sing them.

It's hard not to sound grumpy when BIG titles are ignored, especially when, as in the case of TREE GROWS IN BROOKLYN and WILD RIVER along with the likes of CRY OF THE CITY for instance, perfectly good editions (in terms of picture quality at least) have been released in other regions (these three are available in the UK for instance).

On the other hand, Fox has been releasing some marvellous content in technically top notch editions, the three latest 'Noir' titles to be released being a case in point. Certainly it would be nice if the work of a controversial but important figure like Kazan were more widely available in equally superb editions, but if rights problems exist or perceived marketing limitations make them less commercially viable, it's tough to do anything but shrug and hope for another amazing release like the FORD collection sometime soon. Fox is undoubtedly doing more with its 'classic' library than any other company except WHV and is the only one I can think of that is seriously giving them a run for their money when it comes to extras and the high quality of its transfers.

For me at least when I see new details on the upcoming Fox releases it is always good news, in the hope that the goodies will just keep coming, asssuming of course that Blue-ray doesn't mean that a huge number of pre-existing SD releases get re-released first, which is always a distinct possibility...

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

There is a big rumour floating around that Cry of the City is going to be released by Criterion.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

Just Man Hunt for me, whenever they get around to it.

I'd much rather skip the 300% markup for having the "C" label on it and have Fox release it as part of their Noir line. Oh well.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

The Ritz Bros. titles would be these Ritz starrers: PACK UP YOUR TROUBLES, an official dvd of THE GORILLA, STRAIGHT, PLACE, AND SHOW, KENTUCKY MOONSHINE, and LIFE BEGINS IN COLLEGE.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

I didn't find the Ritz Brothers that amusing based on their performance in On the Avenue (1937). Would love to see a ton of things before giving them a box. How about Alice Faye Set 2, for instance??

Is there some new version of The Day the Earth Stood Still coming other than the Studio Classics version that was released in 2002?

Boomerang is out. I've got it.

Edit: after doing some looking I see that Boomerang was recalled. I guess I was lucky to get a copy. You can however rent it from Neflix.

From what I recall, it was withdrawn for legal reasons. I think it had to do with the real life case, though Fox has never been explicit for the reasons.

Something to do with literary rights surrounding the non-fictional work that the movie was based on.

The opening scene of the movie is unlike almost any other of this era and will leave an impact long after one has seen it. It's a terrific film and does run on cable occasionally so at least it's not completely buried

The ironic thing is that Boomerang was easily accessible to anyone that had a certain chain bookstore in their area when it was initially released. Because word of mouth was so strong on its availability I suspect that said chain sold out of all their copies and Fox probably sold more of this particular installment than they did of some their other studio classics DVDs.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

The Dana Andrews character was based on Homer Cummings, who later became the attorney bgeneral under FDR. On LADY KILLER (in the new WB Gangster Box), there is a brief newsreel of the actual Cummings discussing the opening of Alcatraz.

TCF based BOOMERANG! on an article "The Perfect Crime" by Anthony Abbot (Fulton Oursler, THE GREATEST STORY EVER TOLD) that appeared in The Reader's Digest. In 1946, before photography on BOOMERANG! began, Oursler was threatened with a plagarism by Fred Stanton, who had written a non-fictionalized account of Father Dahme's murder. That claim--more than 60 years old has apparently never been resolved.
BOOMERANG! is often shown on FMC and other cable channels and since the original suit could not have anticipated homevideo rights, this isstrange that BOOMERANG! has not been resolved. Besides the Oursler work is "fictionalized" and the Stanton article is an actual account.
BOOMERANG! has been thwarted three times on homevideo: vhs, dvd, and apparently again when it was dropped from the "Coming Soon" listing. It would be wonderful (and think of the publicity!) if Fox added an additional commentary detailing the actual Dahme case and the legal history of the film.

I would be very surprised that a copyright claim would hold things up at this point. I know today most copyright claims have to be defended with in a few years time or the copyright holder loses their rights. It's one of the reasons that Disney so fiercely defends its copyrights.

Also you can't copyright a historical event which is the reason there were 3 movies made about Amy Fisher. So the story about someone who wrote a non-fiction account of the case mounting a law suit against someone who wrote a fictional account seems unlikely. There would have to be some other issue involved between the two defendants such as Stanton actually contributing directly to BOOMERANG! and not getting credit or compensation.

Hmm...There's no mention of Charlie Chan set #5. I hope this is not cause for concern regarding the rest of the Chans.

Unfortunately, that's only true of trademarks. Copyrights and patents are absolute, and you can go after people for infringement years after the fact.

Ah your right. I was thinking of Mickey Mouse but he is actually a trademark.

But none the less you can't copyright a historical event such as a crime and the legal case that it leads to.

Re: FOX CLASSICS WEBSITE UPDATE

very excited about MANHUNT and the Power boxed set (10 movies, including CAFE METROPOLE--which I've always wanted to see based on the title alone), and I'm also looking forward to the Miranda set, although I guess I'd have preferred to see a 2nd Faye set (with Hello Frisco, Hello; Tin Pan Alley; Rose of Washington Square; The Great American Broadcast; and You Can't Have Everything) + a 2nd Grable (with Coney Island; Wabash Avenue; Diamond Horseshoe; Footlight Serenade + the wonderful Springtime in the Rockies--which is an odd one not to be in the Miranda Box--odd, I mean, when you forget the marketing angle!)

Anyway--I'd buy the whole CM set for Greenwich Village--which I never thought we'd see (BECAUSE it lacks Grable/Faye)

bravo Fox!

You're right. I read Ken Hanke's column about whodunits and he mentioned he'll be recording some audio commentaries for the last set. It sounds like Fox is going to put the rest of Chan films it owns (I think they're seven of them) into one set. Can't wait
