AVR-1708/Cinema CT70

Hello guys

so I got tired with poor quality computer speakers and even more tired of Klipsh Promedia Ultra 5.1's going broken because of a poorly designed amp. so instead i went out and bought DENON AVR-1708 receiver, and Paradigm Cinema 70 CT speakers.

on the PC side i run Creative X-Fi Fatality, and because x-fi does NOT encode 5.1 sound realtime through digital connection I had to use analog stereo/rca type jack connections (i want my games). anyways, i hooked everything up... i get sound, it's 5.1 BUT.... i do not get any bass. this is when i play games or mp3's. i remedied the problem on the PC by turning bass redirection on and boosting the sound by 15hz. i can not seem to get any bass however when i have my ipod connected to the receiver through stereo to rca type cable/jack. Now i see options on the receiver to set the bass redirection... IF the option is set as such on the receiver shouldn't the RECEIVER redirect the bass? why do I even have to bother with setting it on the PC side, and if Denon redirects the bass then my ipod will get bass on mp3's as well. I read the manual and i think i'm missing something critical.

Any thoughts, suggestions?

not sure if it's clear but the bass redirection setting that I do that seems to get bass back when playing computer audio is set on the PC side... fiddling with redirection on receiver side doesn't seem to change results. turning redirection off on PC and setting redirection frequency to 100hz on the receiver yields no bass when playing mp3.

If you cannot apply the Audyssey effects to an the EXT-IN input (a shame, but entirely possible) the best thing to do would be to go into your X-Fi control-panel thingie, select Bass, Enable Bass Redirection. Set the Crossover Frequency to between something fairly high (the centre channel has a -2dB point of 130Hz, and a low crossover point (80Hz) will result in some audio being inaudible.

Leave the bass boost off for now-- if you really need it, set it as appropriate inside the Denon, as more fine grained control is possible.

Re: AVR-1708/Cinema CT70

Can i ask for the reasoning for leaving the bass boost off "for now"? is 15 db too much? i've set my crossover freq on PC @ 130 hz. if i turn off the boost on PC end, to get a reasonable amount of bass into my music coming from the x-fi, i need to boost the sw on the receiver +12.0 db... the max amount.... and it does seem that the audyssey effects dont apply to ext.in... makes me pretty mad. it just seems very odd that i have to boost the 12db to get a regular amount of bass.... say i plugged in a cd player...standalone unit, would i be in the same boat?

Have you calibrated your levels with an SPL meter?
Have you adjusted your subwoofer's volume knob?
Have you made sure that your subwoofer's cut off frequency is at maximum (~150 Hz)?

Have you done a frequency sweep using a DVD calibration disc or THX Optimizer?
