Need some speakers...

Hi there,

I have a new 50" Panasonic plasma mounted above my fireplace hooked up to an Onkyo TX-SR605 A/V unit. There are built in bookshelves on either side of the fireplace where I could put speakers. Right now we're listening to the audio through the TV speakers, and honestly it aint that bad (should tell you our level of audio-phile-ness!). However, I can't get non-HDMI audio (say from a VCR) to go to the TV speakers, so my plan is to get a couple of decent bookshelf speakers for starters and put one on each side of the TV. Then, later, I'll add some in-wall units deeper in the room.

We really don't have a good spot for a center speaker or subwoofer, so my plan was to get some bookshelf speakers with decent woofers in them - but nothing too large. Does anyone have a good suggestion for a pair of middle of the road speakers that would sound nice to start us off? I have a best buy gift certificate for a few hundred bucks, so if it was something they carried that would help.

Thanks for any advice,

Chris

Re: Need some speakers...

You are using the speakers in the TV, but you have an Onkyo 605. that doesn't make sense. What does the 605 do?

Find a way to incorporate a sub...

As far as specific speaker recommendations, someone else will have to chime in.

With a budget of a few hundred dollars, I'd head straight for the Magnolia part of Best Buy and avoid the other part.

From what I've read/heard, a bookshelf is not the best place to put bookshelf speakers. Supposedly it makes them sound a bit boomy or muddy. But if you have to, look for ones that do not have a bass port in the rear.

Since speakers should all be from the same manufacturer for "timbre matching" reasons, you should look for a brand that offers both bookshelves and in-walls.

I like to use comparison sites like Pricegrabber.com to see whats available in different price ranges. Also, internet direct companies like Aperionaudio.com, av123.com, Ascendacoustics.com, audioinsider.com and others usually offer a better value. If you were looking for speakers in the $100 range I would offer up my favorite two or three that I think are the best value at the time, but there's just too much out there in your price range to make a specific suggestion. And several hundred dollars is too much to gamble with.

You can get by without a center. But the sub, as Mr Rice suggested, get one anyway . You won't regret it.

Re: Need some speakers...

Thanks for the replies - as to "why the 605", not having extra speakers was just a temporary financial decision. I always planned to get them in the future - just had to take a little $ break after the plasma and the 605!

Thanks for the tips on some comparison sites - I'll take a look at those today!
