Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

I've noticed they are talked about often here. From what I can gather they make their speakers in Ohio and there are no stores that carry them. So do they have a listening/sample anywhere?

It would also be nice to hear why they have a good reputation. What makes them great, or not so great, to you. I'm looking more towards lower priced speakers, but I am considering saving longer and getting more then entry level speakers.

This forum is bad for me. It constantly makes me think "I think I need something more". I always agree with myself.

LOL, that’s funny! Welcome to the Forum, Pete!

SVS has built its reputation customer by customer on outstanding personalized service, and by building products that offer outstanding “bang for the buck.” One way they accomplish that is selling manufacturer-direct, bypassing the retailer. Regarding the former, it’s not unheard of for the owners of the company to work with customers directly! How often do you find that?

Probably the best way to get to hear their speakers is to post a thread on the various home theater forums asking if someone in your locality will let you come over for an audition. It’s been done before, I assure you! Or, just buy them and audition them at home, which is the best place to hear them. They do have a generous return policy.

Regards.

So true. Couldn't agree more!

For me, it is especially true with software...simply because I don't usually have the spare cash for larger hardware purchases.

Yeah, I can't say my better is as excited about my pending purchases. I need to convince her that the wii will sound amazing!

As for the svs, I was hoping they had a showroom at their headquarters. Customer reviews are worth something, but I'm sure hearing them would seal the deal.

All though I plan on using speakers mainly for movies, do svs do well with music? Is there another high quality brand/line that I should investigate that does well with both?

I have a lot of research to do.

I am assuming that you are close enough to even consider getting to their location? I'd try it if you can. Contact their sales department. I had been in contact with their tech department just last week trying to work out proper sub type and placement for my room. They were very, very helpful. Reviews consistently report that they do not know how they build such great equipment for the price. That being said, you're getting "high" end for a mid range price.

Here is an example review that talks about Music for one of their smaller systems which usually if the small ones excel, it is insight into the big ones.

Home Theater & Sound Equipment Review -- SVS SBS-01 Home-Theater Speaker System (4/2006)

I'd try an e-mail or a phone call. Worth the time.

Well I live on the OH border and I wasn't sure where they were until I read your link. Sadly they are on the other side of the state that I'm near. I enjoyed the article though. If I had to make a choice today I'd get the sbs-01 system.

Would an Onkyo TX-SR605 be enough juice to justify those speakers?

I don't think that the Onkyo would have any problem with this setup. The Onkyo is rated at 90 watts per channel and the SBS-01 system shows that they handle 20w to 120w. Should work just fine. Here is a link to the SBS-01 system. If you have the money, you may want to take their optional add of the PB12-NSD over the packaged PB10-NSD sub. For only $125 more, there is a decent difference for the money.

SVSound - Complete Systems

Their advertising their 5.1 system at $999 and 7.1 system at $1175. If that is not the price range your looking for, throw out a number and we'll see if there is something else out there that better fits the bill.

Good Luck !!

Thanks mac, you answered another question I have. I'm leaning toward the 7.1 system, but I wondered if it was worth upgrading to the 12". I had a feeling it was worth it but for someone to say it's worth it makes me feel better.

Thanks for the info!

If you're wondering, do it! That way you avoid the "what if..." scenarios. I bought the 20-39PC+ on the strength of many reviews and emails with Ron S. from the company. I haven't been disappointed but knew they have a good return policy if I was. If theater is your main concern you NEED at least a 12" sub. I wish I had waited for the SBS-01 satellites, but that gives me another excuse to upgrade.

Re: Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

Always helps to hear more people recommend these speakers.

I'm pretty much at the beginning of my busy season at work and I also have a goal of putting x amount in savings. I'm in the fireworks business so I won't even have time to play with my new toys till after that. So between my $600 from Uncle Sam and saving up I should be ready to buy them and the onkyo reciever right after the 4th!

Wow, the anticipation would kill me but when you fire up the new equipment and you're walking around with a grin that just won't go away it will be worth it. Let us know how you make out.

Re: Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

Pete, last year I recommended a friend try out an SVS system. she ended up getting 4 SBS-01 and an SCS-01 for the center, plus the 25-31 PCi sub. The sub is a big deal with satellite systems like this, plus the PCi has a much smaller footprint and we were able to virtually hide it. Anyway, she also got the Onkyo 605 and after I got it set up I got an email back saying "This ****ing ROCKS!!". Despite how it sounds, she's not a teenager, but in her early 40s. Anyway, the only hesitation she had was that the speakers were to "large" (her words, not mine), which is an unfortunate of the Bose phenomenon ("I was expecting little 2" plastic cubes and a little 10" 'sub'"). I consider the speakers pretty small, but in a world where most people think Bose is the pinnacle, these can seem large.

Still, whether you're happy with them is always a personal matter. They are built far better than what you would normally find in the $600 range for a 5 piece set.

Re: Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

My step dad bought one of those bose systems with the small speakers. I wasn't all that impressed considering what he paid for them.

And yeah, I would love buy them right now, and I have the dough, I'm just trying to not jump into anything to quickly. Which translates to trying to please the girlfriend so I don't have to turn the volume up to drown out the displeasure. Heh. I say that half jokingly. She's really not against it so much as she's concerned about money. I'd rather her be like that then someone who spends money like it's nothing.

My wife is pretty much the same way and if so it sounds like you're in good hands. I'm one of those spendspendspend people but because I listened and stayed with the budget I have the system I wanted. Stay strong!

Re: Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

I am pretty much in the same boat. I am very happy with my speakers BUT in the next year, I want to replace my sub with an SVS sub. I play a lot of music (2.1, mains and sub only). My room is 15x11 and sonically pretty good. I am looking for something maybe around the $1000 range or so, maybe a cylinder but it needs to be good for music and rock the house for films as well. My current sub... PSB Subsonic 6 has what I consider to be a lot of port noise for a sub so the SVS has so be virtually port-noise-free and extend low.

Suggestions?

The 20-39PC+ is configured at my place and does a very good job with music as a 2.1 system. Movies? 7.1 - My cats take off when they hear the THX intro start; they got caught once during the explosion and don't want to try it again

It is within your price range too!

Re: Is there a way to hear svs speakers?

I think I may go with the following ..... SVS PB12-Plus Powered Box Sub and since I live in Toronto, I will just pick the thing up myself at the local supplier.
