Arthur C. Clarke: RIP

'2001: A Space Odyssey' author Arthur C. Clarke dies - USATODAY.com

Arthus C. Clarke, noted science fiction writer who is probably best known for his collaboration with Stanley Kubrick and "2001: A Space Odyssey", and other novels, passed away today, he was 90 years old.

It's my hope that Clarke and Kubrick are toasting to the stars today.

RIP, Mr. Clarke.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke: RIP

Another big loss. The driving force behind the geosynchronous satellite, the movie 2001 and a number of science fiction classics. He will be deeply missed.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke

One of the first two sci-fi books I ever read was by Clarke. His 2001 is still a very good read, and helped to explain (or at the very least elaborated upon) the film in many ways. He will be missed.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke: RIP

A great loss but a great life lived. Author, scientist, and visionary. The first two science fiction books I ever read were "2001" and "Childhood's End". Bon voyage on your last great Odyssey.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke: RIP

Too sad, but thankfully he lived through the actual year of his greatest creation, 2001.

In his honor, I have switched my avatar to the 2001 movie poster.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke: RIP

The man was a true visionary and a great writer. Not a day goes by that I don't use or hear about a form of technology he had already integrated in one of his many, many stories. The man will be greatly missed, but his vision of the future will live on and eventually become a reality.

"Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."

Friend of mine just heard this for the first time this evening and was astonished by truth and scope of it.

RIP.

Memories of Sir Arthur

Posted this in another forum last year for the release of 2001:ASO on HD-DVD

"Four years later a friend and I had the chance to meet A.C. Clarke. He was giving at talk at the Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. Afterward he was kind enough to chat with us back stage for about 10 minutes. There weren’t too many people around; the cadets had other things to do I guess. He signed books (I still have them ), we talked about India (I’m originally from there and Clarke lives in Sri Lanka) and was invited to come out to Sri Lanka. Being a student in high school did not afford me much opportunity to engage in such a trip, but it was nice of him to offer. I asked him what his next book was going to be, Clarke replied “ Rendezvous With Rama.” and asked me “ Do you know what “Rama means?” so talked about Hinduism, space travel and such. After “Childhood’s End”, “Rama” is my favorite Clarke novel. A nice memory of a very gracious man."

Today
Thank you Sir Arthur for taking me places I can never visit and showing me things I can never see. Thank you also for making the world a little bit better with your grace, wit and sagacity.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at 90!

Sad to hear of Arthur C.Clarke's death. Back in the 70's I was a voracious sci-fi reader, Clarke and Asimov were my two favorite authors. Loved reading and rereading Rendezvous with Rama, 2001 A Space Odyssey, Against the Fall of Night and my favorite, Childhood's End.

Rest in Peace.

One of the most prophetic phrases EVER written, in my humble opinion. I mean, even the average science fiction writer 30 years ago could not imagine a communications device anywhere near the capabilities of the Apple iPhone now available.

But Clarke in the scientific world was best-known for writing just after World War II ended an article on the idea of using orbital mechanics to place a satellite in orbit so it appears to stay in one place in the sky from ground observers, perfect as a communications relay.

Truly, a passing of one of the best-known science fiction writers of the 20th Century.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at 90!

Rendezvous with Rama was the first book that I read as a child, about 8, that truly filled me with wonder at the possibilities in the vast universe and a thirst for knowledge.....Mr. Clark and Carl Sagan's Cosmos taught gave me a greater yearning to learn than any teacher I had up until my teen years.

RIP, as Michael Harris said above, a great life lived, his influence and inspiration to mankind was and is tangible and will not be forgotten.

This I did not know...

Definitely the day is a little less bright without this fine man around. They say that when one passes that another shall appear but I often wonder where the visionaries for my generation are. He will be sorely missed.

That's why Earth's geosynchronous orbit is also nicknamed the "Clarke Belt."

It's also why I like the book "Islands in the Sky" so much. He integrated the concept in the storyline so perfectly and so clearly that anyone could have understood it.

Unfortunately for us, the Clarke Belt is now an overcrowded parking lot. I'm not so sure he expected that to happen in his lifetime!

Re: Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at 90!

It was Clarke who got my attention at an early age with "2001" (aka "The Sentinel") and is probably why I'm such an avid Sci-Fi and Science geek now.

I hope who ever decides to film/produce/direct "Rendezvous with Rama" does it justice.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at 90!

Rendezvous with Rama was the book that inspired my interest in science as well as science fiction. I was delighted to hear that a movie based on his book may be released in about 2009.

I've had his brilliant words in my signature block for years. He'll be missed.

Re: Arthur C. Clarke has passed away at 90!

I also read "Rendezvous with Rama" and was amazed that Sir Arthur C. Clark could conjure such stuff up from his imagination. He truly was a visionary. I think not since Da Vinci has there been one so ahead of his time. We will miss him dearly.

Rest in peace Arthur.
