I just saw this headline, and I'm at a loss for words.

Yes, very surprising indeed. I just read a bit of news about his next movie a few days ago. He was a talented filmmaker and it's our loss we didn't get more from him.

Very sad. I enjoyed his films.

Re: Director Minghella has died at 54 years of age!

Wow a bit of a shock, and only 54. It's been an unusually bad year so far for unexpected deaths in the movie industry. Renfro, Ledger, Scheider and now Minghella.

Sad news.

RIP

I was shocked when I heard this on the radio. Who knows how many great pictures he could have made in the future.

Re: Director Minghella has died at 54 years of age!

Surprising. I'd never been much of a fan (he had a knack for making two and a half hours feel like seven), but I did rather enjoy his first and most recent films (Truly Madly Deeply and Breaking and Entering). His relatively short career is actually more varied than it first appears.

My God, I can't believe it. The English Patient was one of my favourites. So sad for his family.

Re: Director Minghella has died at 54 years of age!

As others have said...shocking. The circumstances sound eerily similar to the serious complications that Roger Ebert had after his surgery,

What a talent!
The man was heavily involved in writing, producing and directing.
He was the interviewer in Atonement so he also has an acting credit.

Anthony's parents had an ice cream factory so we can assume he had a happy childhood.

Tony, I was just watching it now on the news, one of my favorite sci-fi authors, really sad.

Re: Director Minghella has died at 54 years of age!

I absolutely loved The English Patient when I first saw it back in 1996. It deserved every one of it's Oscars. Anthony Minghella will truly be missed. Another talented filmmaker lost before his time.

The [London] Times has produced the following obituary:

Anthony Minghella: The Times obituary | Times Online Obituary

For Brits, Minghella will also be remembered for writing several of the best episodes of Morse (a murder mystery series that was enormously popular over here). By a strange quirk of fate, his last project - the pilot episode of The Number 1 Ladies Detective Agency - will be broadcast in the UK over the Easter weekend.

Huh, I'd completely forgotten that he worked on Inspector Morse. It was one of the most popular series on Mystery! over here, too.
