Has anyone here ever gone 'Geocaching'?

Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site

It's basically treasure hunting and it's gaining popularity as a pastime and for some it's an obsession. The way it works is you use coordinates that you get from the site on a specific 'cache' of items and GPS trackers to find the booty, but if your skilled enough with maps etc you can find the loot without a tracker. I went on a hunt today, my first one, with a friend and it was a lot of fun, i'll definately be going on another one.

He was telling me that the hunts vary in complexity on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being a very complex hunt using clues such as morse code written on rocks that must be deciphered before you can proceed to 1 where an item can be hidden in a Wal Mart parking lot. There are hidden items spread pretty much anywhere you can imagine and that some of the wild ideas starters come up with are really impressive and creative. I typed in my area and came up with dozens of results of hidden items that I plan to look for in my spare time.

We didn't find anything Earth shattering, it was a metal strong-box hidden in the woods under some rocks with little trinkets inside, I took a keychain picture frame and a little Slinky with Giraffe prints on it. My friend then left a couple of matchbox cars in the box for the next hunter to come along.

There was a log book inside as well that each person has to sign, the last person to find the box before us was on 1/3 of this year. Inside the box also was a Geocaching coin with an identification # on it, I was told that this coin is what's known as a "globe tracker" and by going to the website and entering the ID # you can see where that coin has been around the world.

It's all in the fun and adventure of the hunt and not necessarily what you find, although my friend told me that on very rare occasions you do find money.

It was really cool.

I did something similar in the 80s. In the "good old days" we didn't have GPS though. We used topographical maps, a compass and the sun. I went only once or twice and it was definitely a lot of fun. It was a good way to spend time enjoying nature in the woods and more exciting than just hiking.

I haven't given Geocaching any though in years. I don't think it is really gaining in popularity in that I read many more articles about it in 01.

In fact in 01 Fox used it as a marketing gimmick for the release of Planet of the Apes. They hid the wooden spoon used by Michael Clarke Duncan during the dining scene in the hills near my house.

I think it is a great weekend activity in that it usually involves some problem solving along with outdoor activity.

Perhaps I should buy my own GPS and give it a shot again.

We've been to most of the geocaches that are within walking distance of our house and driven to a lot as well. Its a great excuess to get out of the house with the kids and my 5 year old loves to 'go treasure' hunting

At the forum in my sig in the outdoors section there is actually a 3 page thread about geocaching, I was thinking about getting into seeing how there are alot of caches in my area.

Geocaching is great fun. My kids love it. We've been gathering stuff together and plan to hide our own cache this summer.

Yes, my brother got me into it. I got a GPS unit for Christmas but it's been so cold I've only gone out once so far--can't wait until the weather makes walking more pleasant. The best part isn't the stuff you find, but the other stuff you see along the way, especially wildlife. I live in a fairly urban area near Pittsburgh but I've seen lots of deer, wild turkeys and other animals while geocaching.

I found a geocache by accident one time on a backpacking trip.

I've been once. It was fun. We actually just went letterboxing this past weekend. It's basically the same thing. Go to the website, type in your location and pick the spots you want to go to. There's usually a bunch. I think the main difference is with letterboxing you take a stamp with you and put your name and stamp in the book that's in the hidden box.

Went on 3 more yesterday, the first one was much like the first but the other two were "micros" (very tiny caches that are easy to find) and they were nothing more than a piece of metal wrapped in green electrical tape and placed under a bridge that we had to sign and a pill bottle with a small log sheet inside.
