Geocaching - The Official Global GPS Cache Hunt Site
It's basically treasure hunting and it's gaining popularity as a pastime and for some it's an obsession. The way it works is you use coordinates that you get from the site on a specific 'cache' of items and GPS trackers to find the booty, but if your skilled enough with maps etc you can find the loot without a tracker. I went on a hunt today, my first one, with a friend and it was a lot of fun, i'll definately be going on another one.
He was telling me that the hunts vary in complexity on a scale of 1-5 with 5 being a very complex hunt using clues such as morse code written on rocks that must be deciphered before you can proceed to 1 where an item can be hidden in a Wal Mart parking lot. There are hidden items spread pretty much anywhere you can imagine and that some of the wild ideas starters come up with are really impressive and creative. I typed in my area and came up with dozens of results of hidden items that I plan to look for in my spare time.
We didn't find anything Earth shattering, it was a metal strong-box hidden in the woods under some rocks with little trinkets inside, I took a keychain picture frame and a little Slinky with Giraffe prints on it. My friend then left a couple of matchbox cars in the box for the next hunter to come along.
There was a log book inside as well that each person has to sign, the last person to find the box before us was on 1/3 of this year. Inside the box also was a Geocaching coin with an identification # on it, I was told that this coin is what's known as a "globe tracker" and by going to the website and entering the ID # you can see where that coin has been around the world.
It's all in the fun and adventure of the hunt and not necessarily what you find, although my friend told me that on very rare occasions you do find money.
It was really cool.
