Best Solution?

I recently set up my H/K AVR 445 and was wondering what is considered the best way to connect my PS3 to obtain the 1080p resolution but the ability to hear the sound through the H/K. I have one HDMI cord (can buy a second if need be). Do I just need to take a HDMI from the PS3 to the H/K and then out of the H/K to the TV? Thanks in advance!

Re: Best Solution?

A quick examination of the owner's manual for this AVR (online) leads me to think that the answer to your question is, "yes." Assuming that the 445 can handle decoded Pulse-code modulated (PCM) audio via HDMI then you should be able to hear the HD audio codecs in that fashion. The PS3 decodes all the HD audio (with the exception of DTS-MA) and sends the decoded signal through HDMI to the receiver. Most modern receivers with HDMI will then take that PCM digital stream and output it to the speakers. No decoding is needed at the receiver end. At some point it is rumored that the PS3 will also be able to decode DTS-MA (DTS "Master Audio" - another HD audio codec) so that you will be able to hear that as well. In the meantime, you will still get audio from DTS-MA soundtracks but all that the PS3 will pass through the HDMI cable is the 5.1 channel DTS "core" (which sounds pretty good by itself).

Hope this helps a bit. Maybe other owners of the H/K AVR 445 can chime in.

Re: Best Solution?

I received my HDMI cable in the mail yesterday and was excited to hook the PS3 properly with the H/K AVR. I have the PS3 running a HDMI cable to the HDMI IN port and then a HDMI cable from the HDMI OUT to the TV. The picture is there, but not the audio. When I use the A/V RCA cables that came with the PS3 works for both audio and video...but it is only in 480p. Any ideas on what I may be doing wrong? I have the PS3 set up for HDMI audio and video when it is not working also.
