The site was locked down right before the first game started at 12:00 EDT, which would have been 9:00 PDT.

Right now UConn is killing me. I have them going to the Sweet Sixteen.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I found myself rooting for Belmont as well, even though I chose Duke in my bracket. Belmont played an incredible game, and even given Duke isn't at their best, it was an impressive display. That should be about it for Duke, they just don't have it this season.
I'm looking forward to the UNC game tonight. I have them as this years champions (I'm a bit biased as my oldest is a UNC grad). UNC has been playing very solid lately.

Wow, 2nd day is definitely what March Madness is about. 3 upsets already today.

Both big and bad weaknesses in the tournament.

Agreed, they probably are better than their teams the last couple of years, but a pale comparison to teams of the past. Ironically, they had a good shot at Kevin Love who grew up a Duke fan, but, at least from what I heard, Coach K gave him a cold shoulder early in his recruitment, which opened him up to other teams, eventually settling on UCLA. If Duke had Love, they'd probably be the favorite. Singler and Love have been long-time friends and know each others' games. With Love on the inside and the three point threat, Duke would be a lot better. Thing is that UCLA's three point shooting has been VERY inconsistent, especially Shipp, who has been pretty horrible of late.

I think if Duke and UCLA meet up, UCLA wins because of their defense.

But, of course, especially given what's transpired today, both have to get to the Elite Eight.

And now, Vandy is being taken to the cleaners by Sienna, another team that I would have been completely oblivious was in the tournament.

Wow!!! What a day!!!

There's a lot of stories about Love's recruitment, and no doubt the story has changed over the year(s), maybe even by the involved participants. So take this with a grain of salt (and keep in mind I'm a UCLA alum).

The way I've heard/read it over the years, and I've followed the recruitment closely, was as follows:

The Loves are So-Cal natives. Yes they lived in Oregon when Kevin went to HS. But they're So-Cal natives. Beach Boys, Mike Love, etc. Stan Love has said that he idolized and wanted to play for UCLA when he was young but no offer ever came. He then went on to star for Oregon.

It was Ernie Kent who botched the recruiting for UO. He might have gone there but EK did something to upset or disrespect (wherever perceived or actual it doesn't matter) the Loves, who then opened up his recruiting. Yes Duke and UCLA were among the leaders, and it was widely known that he and Singler were shopping many of the same schools. They both tripped to UCLA and Duke on the same days.

Love was the first to commit, choosing UCLA. He then tried to recruit Kyle, but Papa Singler was a big Duke fan, and ultimately Kyle chose Duke.

A big part of what Kevin said made him commit was having family close by. He has family in So-Cal, none in Durham. I had never heard that Duke was a favorite of Kevin. I had heard that had EK not screwed up in the early going (and Howland's been following Kevin since the 9th grade), they would have been the prohibitive favorite being Stan's alma mater, and close to their Oregon home.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I've been watching GMU all year long and was dissapointed but not surprised by their poor performance against Notre Dame. As Campbell goes, so goes the team, and Campbell had the worst game of his season. This was not the GMU team of '06, which was nationally ranked for one week of the season and got an at-large bid; this was a typical mid-major team which was only in the tournament because of the automatic bid.

There's always next year - I've heard the incoming class is pretty sick.

At least Will Thomas ended his college career on a high note, he had a monster game and Notre Dame had no answer for his play. Unfortunately he was the only guy on the team with a good game.

Another cool thing... this Sunday's Circuit City ad in the Washington Post has images of George Mason and VCU players in all their TVs. I don't know if it's different for different localities, but even if it is, I'd expect to see local basketball powerhouses Georgetown and Maryland instead of CAA teams.

Well, it is Lamar Butler and Gabe Norwood, both of whom have graduated and weren't on this year's GMU team......

I was in conniption fits during the UCLA-Texas A&M, my bracket was so hosed if UCLA went down tonight...

Same here. I didn't have them all the way, but a lot further than that game; as it is, my bracket's already hurting from UConn out in one and Duke out in two...

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

No offense to their competition, but the road the Jayhawks have to take to the Final four is now like a walk in the park in comparison to other brackets, no offense meant.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I had Georgetown as my national champion. Needless to say, my brackets are completely hosed.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

Philip, you and . . . well, just you. LOL! For the record, I only have 10 teams still alive in the Sweet Sixteen, 6 teams still alive in the Elite Eight, and my Final Four is still good.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I ended up with 11 of the sweet 16, and also 6 of the elite 8, and all of my final 4 picks intact. If UCLA can win it all, I'm gonna look like a genius in my 3 pools. But UNC looks unbeatable so far.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I'm doing pretty well. I'm in 93 percentile in Yahoo. I have 11 of the sweet 16 and all elite 8. It was a very entertaining weekend of basketball. UNC continues to play excellent ball. If they keep the focus and energy up they can take it all. I can practically see the bonfires on Franklin Street.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

11/16 as well, 96th percentile in Yahoo. As with Patrick, if UCLA wins it all, so will I.

Coincidentally, the last time I won an NCAA BB Pool? 1995

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I'm late to this thread, but I'm doing OK with my bracket. I have 12 of the Sweet 16 and my Elite 8 and Final Four are all still possible. I need UCLA to win it all. I missed Villanova, Western Kentucky, West Virginia and Washington State. I'm mad about missing Washington State so badly, but I did have Davidson into this round (sorry Phillip ).

BTW, has anyone else found the officiating to be inexplicable and bad at times. I'm not normally all over officiating and I have "no horse in this race," but of the first four days of the tournament I thought they were pretty bad on most of the games on at least two of days. The way CBS showed the games on Sunday didn't allow me enough of a view of various games to comment on those games in meaningful way.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

No close games tonight. Davidson won by 17, Texas won by 20, Kansas is up by 19 at the half and Memphis is pounding MSU by 30 at the half.

worst 2nd weekend of the tournament in a long time, maybe ever

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

For the most part, the tournament has been disappointing in terms of the lack of upsets and the frequency of blowouts. But some great basketball has been played, particularly by:

North Carolina, Memphis, and Kansas. Great athleticism and depth. They're all very well-coached.

Kevin Love. Dude looks like a shorter Greg Ostertag, but he has the biggest basketball IQ I ever seen from a freshman. Love is money.

Stephen Curry and Davidson. The story of the tournament. Even if they lose to Kansas, which I expect, they should give Curry the Final Four MVP regardless of whether or not he shows up there.

As expected they did lose to Kansas, just not until the last second!

All 4 #1 seeds in the Final Four for the first time ever. That means my #9 bracket at ESPN is going to be the highest scoring one.

Isn't it Most Outstanding Player? The last player to win while playing on a losing team was Akeem Olajuwon in 1983.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

First time in my life I've had all four of the final four.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I can't win my pool unfortunately. Even if Carolina wins the title, that would put me in no better than second since a person ahead of me has the exact same results as me in the next couple of rounds.

It is kind of funny because my friend Art (he's the one who matches my bracket from here on out) is playing for the first time in his life and has all the top seeds in the final 4. So for all the years for that to happen for the first time, this had to be that year.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I also have all final four. I jumped up to 97 percentile on yahoo. Go Heels!

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

Since I basically went "chalk" this year, it all comes down to UCLA pullling it out against UNC for me to win a few pools this year. Also ended up in the 97th percentile on Yahoo.

Re: NCAA basketball, tornadoes, and March Madness 2008

I think Memphis can beat either NC or Kansas on Monday if they play up to their potential.
