CAT5 or Wireless?

Greetings,

Roughly 6 years ago we had five CAT5 outlets installed in our apartment. One in the bedroom and four in the family room. What is CAT5 and how can I use it for audio purposes? Can I somehow hook up rear surround speakers via CAT5? Should I go wireless instead for the rear surrounds? KEF and another company called Rainbow both make well thought of wireless systems.

Thanks,

Eddie

Re: CAT5 or Wireless?

CAT-5 is a set of 8 copper wires in 4 twisted pairs. It's what is used for networking computers, and also can be used for phone lines. Can't help you as to the question of using it for running audio..

Re: CAT5 or Wireless?

There's a system called A-Bus that uses Cat5 wiring.

Re: CAT5 or Wireless?

In that case, you need to keep in mind that how the wiring was run will also determine whether it would work for you or not.

Re: CAT5 or Wireless?

You can use CAT 5 for audio and video but you need to add a balun that will balance the signal from the cat 5 to either a digital audio hdmi or components cable.
