This actually was a good episode. Not a lot of laugh-out funny
humor to be found here, but I am amazed at how fast they put
this episode together with a very clever "Oceans XX" tie-in.

After 10+ years I am still pleasantly surprised by the creativity
within this show.

I don't get it; why would they think that the average SP fan would get HSM humor??

I didn't really find it that funny cause I was a bit lost.

I've never seen any of the High School Musical movies (nor do I want to), but after seeing several TV spots for HSM3, I think we all have a good idea what these movies are. Last night's episode of South Park pretty much fulfilled my expectations of what HSM is.

Yeah, it's not like you needed to see High School Musical to get the jokes- you just need to have seen one commercial or look at the CD cover and you can guess that it's probably exactly like what they showed in the episode. I doubt they even watched those movies to write this episode.

I thought maybe I was missing references (because I didn't see much humor in it), but if there weren't any references, then I have to say that it was just a weak episode.

Actually, I kind of thought that the point of the episode was that we WEREN'T supposed to get it because that was the point of the boys being 'too old' and 'out of the loop', but I might have been reaching.

It basically was HSM, down to the generically wholesome lyrics and relentless beat, only with the boys trapped in the middle. Their song at the end, complete with Cartman's solo justifying his hate speech towards blacks and jews, coupled with the grade school politics of conformity, were what did it for me.

While I have heard of the HSM series I have never seen them (nor want to) I certinly see the joke though.

IMO the Hybrid line by it's self was worth the price of admission. That was just classic.

The part I laughed at was when the kid punched his father in nose. I will admit that the flamboyant father trying to get his kid into singing/dancing was funny, but I kept thinking there was a bigger picture that I was missing. Is there a storyline in HSM about a 'jock' father wanting his son to play sports and the kid just wanting to sing??

I just kept feeling like I wasn't truly appreciating the spoof (by not having seen the movies).

I've seen parts of the HSM films, but this episode didn't really do anything for me. (Then again, I don't remember the "hybrid" line people are referencing, so I probably missed the good parts.)

The first HSM movie had something to do with basketball IIRC.

Yeah, another weak entry, but in the big picture you have to
admire the amount of effort it takes to pull off an episode like
this one. One of the things that gets overlooked is the incredible
talent that is involved in creating musical numbers for both South
Park TV and Film as well as other Matt and Trey projects. These
guys really exceed in the musical number department ("Everybody
has Aids," "I'm Just a Christmas Jew," "Blame Canada,").

I thought the flamboyant father singing and slapping other
characters was kind of funny. Other than that, it's another
forgettable episode.

As of late I am just not laughing as much at South Park or
(even worse) Family Guy. I think both these shows have lost
their edge or just going through burnout from running for too
many seasons.

I think people's enjoyment of this episode may vary based if you went to school with goth or vampire kids. Since I went to high school in the days of goth kids, I found it pretty funny. I always like when they focus on background characters too.

Butters' transformation taking place at Hot Topic cracked me up. The goth kids burning Hot Topic down was funny (especially the "Burn down, burn down Hot Topic" song playing in the background). Actually, I thought all the stuff with vampiric Butters was good.

Overall, this season wasn't their best year (by far) but I'll definitely be back for Season Thirteen in a few months.

The whole "goth" thing didn't start until I was long gone from high school (graduated in 1994), but I'm familiar with the culture based on what I've seen in movies & TV. It was an enjoyable episode, nothing spectacular though. Any episode with Butters - especially when he's rebelling is always worth watching. The scenes with the goth kids vs. the wannabe vampire kids were great too (some hilarious dialog) - but I think the best part about the episode was the beginning, in computer class. Seeing them all playing Call Of Duty(?) instead of doing their school work was awesome.

This was a pretty decent episode -- which puts it right near the top of this rather mediocre half-season.

I graduated high school in 1989, and we had goth kids. They listened to Souxsie and the Banshees and Joy Division and such. Maybe I should think of them as Proto-Goth.

Nothing proto about it. The goth subculture was a decade old by the time you graduated -- the first goth band, the Bauhaus, had been broken up for five years by that time.

Yeah, not a bad episode. Loved the fact that the Goth kids
were continually pissed off that they were being mistaken for
the Vamps.

I take it that this is the final episode of the season? Yes?
