Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films) - Page 24

In First Contact we see their Earth 'borgafied' after the sphear opens its temperal portal, so clearly the altering of history effected their existing timeline. That was what I was thinking of, clear examples where we literally see the timeline has changed.

In City on the edge' we see the crew stranded on the planet as the Enterprise and federation no longer exist.

I actually didn't count ST4, forgot about the TA formula. However, they were not aware of the formula's origins, and them giving it to that guy could very well have been how it always happened. They point out as much in the film. This is how I think time travel should work, and was how they portrayed it in;

Times Arrow. Here the actions of the crew in the past were already a part of history. Guinan had been aware of the events for hundreds of years.

Okay Zack, I see what you mean. I thought you were referring to changes to the present (Star Trek) timeline that stays permanent because of something that is altered in the past. And it went way over my head that the JJAbrams film is essentially that.

Yes, it seems that often, and I like the 2 Time Cops in DS9 Trials and Tribble-lations, that an often seen argument is that one's time traveling to the past was always going to happen because it was part of history. "I hate it when that happens!"

I just thought of a question that might be unique.

In the entire run of Star Trek TOS, can you name episodes where there are 2 security guards posted on the bridge standing guard next to the turbolift?

Nelson,

That's a fun question. My first thought is that the following episodes might have two security guards posted on the bridge standing guard next to the turbolift:

The Changling

Elaan of Troyius

I also thought of Dagger Of the Mind, but that episode has only one stationed there, I believe.

The one that pops into mind for me is "And The Children Shall Lead" because I remember Kirk screaming at Mr. Leslie.

You guys are coming up with episodes I wasn't thinking of!  I'd have to check on those. They all sound plausible! To tell you the truth, I had one episode in mind that I know the guards are there and I had a thought there were others, but I wasn't sure which!

Nelson,

How about Mirror Mirror?  That seems like it might be an episode that meets your criteria.
Didnt The Doomsday Machine also do it?
Scott, Rick, Correct! Originally, The Doomsday Machine inspired the question. I thought it was the first time we see this happening and I suspect it was a set-up so that later, Spock could have Decker removed from the bridge. "You wouldn't dare!, You're bluffing..."

And Mirror, Mirror also had the guards. But it was a natural organic thing given this was the Empire and not the Federation, so it was technically a correct answer and one I was thinking of. But I thought there was probably one or 2 more instances elsewhere.

Well done! If I have time, I'll look up the other episodes mentioned. Please, one of you think of another.

Here is one:

At the beginning of a briefing room scene in this episode, Sulu appears to be asleep with his head down on the table.

Michael,

That's an excellent question.  I'll have to 'cogitate the possibilities for a time.' ;)
 I believe it's Corbomite Maneuver.
Yeah, it is. I never noticed that until looking at the episode again last night. I had to look twice. Sulu is conked out during a briefing about a posible hostile alien invader :)

But in the next shots that show him, he's awake, of course.
Yeah, and Uhura was really bored to! I think they must have been in that meeting a long time!
And they sure were tossing back the coffee :)

When I was out running tonight, I thought of The Corbomite Manuever and The Immunity Syndrome.  In The Corbomite Maneuver, I believe the ship was motionless (after the destruction of the warning buoy) for about eighteen hours, and as a result, the crew was fatigued.  I recall hearing Kirk say he was tired, but I think that was in The Immunity Syndrome as he's asking Spock, "can you tell me what it isn't?"

My other thought Scott was the briefing room scene in Balance of Terror. Sulu was there too.

Nelson,

We may have to speak to Sulu about sleeping on the job....

I watched Court Martial last night. That one has a lot of interesting things in it. Cogley is perfect in his role.

Did you ever wonder why Cogley responds to Jamie with this line (underlined below)? And his look is quite puzzled. Is Jamie being truthful, and is Cogley on to something after she makes this appeal for Kirk?

From Court Martial:

Kirk: This is Lieutenant Commander Finney's daughter.
Jamie: Mr. Cogley, we've got to stop this. Make him take a ground assignment. I realize it wasn't his fault. I won't make any trouble. Make him change his plea.
Cogley: It's too late for that, Jame.
Kirk: But I'm glad you don't blame me anymore for what happened.
Jamie: I was just so upset that night. I'm sorry.
Kirk: Don't say any more.
Jamie: But I have to. I never realized how close you and Dad had been until I read through some papers he wrote, Ietters to Mother and me. I don't know how I ever could've thought that you-- Mr. Cogley, ruining Jim won't change what's happened.
Cogley: That's very commendable, Miss Finney, but most unusual. After all, Captain Kirk is accused of causing your father's death,
and the evidence would indicate his guilt.
Jamie: I was just thinking of Jim.
Kirk: I know, and I thank you. I have to go and change. You ready?
Cogley: No, but I may be getting ready.

I bet they had a subplot where Cogley suspected that Finney was alive and got word to his daughter.
You know Scott, I have never thought about that line in past viewings. Michael's theory makes sense. Must have ended up on the cutting room floor.

It's always great that one can still find little hidden things like that today!

Michael,

That's the conclusion I've come to over the years -- that Cogley knew somehow.

Nelson,

I continue to find things like that in TOS every now and then.  It's quite a lot of fun when it occurs. :)
Yes, the last one I discovered just a few weeks ago when I saw Bread and Circuses. It never occurred to me that one of Kirk's lines is a double entendre!

Nelson,

I watched that one three or four nights ago.  Have you ever noticed after the opening beam down scene that the planet's inhabitants speak with an echo?  It's almost as if some of their voices are being projected over a p.a. system.  The effect doesn't occur for Kirk, Spock, or Bones, however.  It's during the scene depicted here:

Oh yeah, Scott. I've been noticing that for many years. I just thought it could have been the way Flavius' dialogue was recorded.

Nelson,

You're probably right.  But I've often thought that it was intentional, sort of in line with the electronic broadcasts we see at the beginning of the episode.  Of course, I really have no idea, and am only speculating.  But that's half the fun. :)
Okay, I just had an idea for another question and I thought I'd jump the gun and post it out of turn if there are no objections!

This will be the first question from the new 2009 Star Trek movie.

After whiz-kid Chekov successfully beams Kirk and Sulu up from their free fall down to Vulcan, what does he exclaim in Russian and what does it translate to in English?

(I don't know the answer, so it's sort of asking the question too.)

"Man, that was close!"  Just a guess on my part. :)

Speaking of the new film, I am going to watch it again, probably today or tomorrow.  I'm looking forward to it yet again. :)
The commentary hinted it was something unrepeatable in a PG-13 film, I can almost imagine it was "I am the f******* man!!" but I'd like to know what it really was.
Yeah, it was my understanding that it was one of those colorful metaphors.  If I find out, I'll let you know. The lady who cuts my hair is Russian.

Scott, I have to admit, I have seen the film one more time! There's a lot to praise that they did.
Okay, I found an answer to my question above:

I'll spoilerize. This is a quote from an interview with Anton Yelchin from trekmovie.com:

Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
There are certain things in the movie that are very Russian that is difficult for an American audience to pick up on. Like when [Kirk and Sulu] freefall and I capture them and I say something in Russian….[says Russian phrase]…it means "Oh man!" basically, which is something I ad-libbed. Which goes back to what I was saying. Chekov never speaks Russian in the series, and that was Russian slang.
So you guys were very close! I thought it would be a colorful metaphor, but perhaps Anton is cleaning it up.
