Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films) - Page 21

My forte is the original series and movies. I like all the other Trek shows but am not too good with Trek trivia beyond the original crew.

Here's some Trek trivia that might or might not stump people.

What episode showed Kirk eating on the bridge?

Miri, Return Of The Archons and City On The Edge Of Forever were filmed on the outdoor sets of what classic TV show?

When I met William Campbell at a convention in the 80's he told us a story about the casting that hasn't seem to been repeated much. The part of the Trelane in Squire Of Gothos was written especially for an actor other than William Campbell. Who is he? Extra credit: Why was he ultimataly not used?

The awesome gown that Leslie Parish wore in Who Mourns for Adonis was also worn by her in an episode of what TV show?

What were used for the dials on the communicators and tricorders (hint: it's a piece of a toy)?
 Awesome questions Michael!

I can answer all of them except the William Campbell one. Let me ponder before I answer! I happen to have been studying the phaser and communicator over the years, so I know a lot about those props!
A hint for the Trelane question. The actor was a part of another great Sci-fi pop culture phenomena of the 1970's.

1. The Man Trap. Looked like croutons!
2. The Andy Griffith Show.
3. Martin Landau. Who was next door filming Mission: Impossible, a Desilu production.
4. Mannix-must have been a first to be able to re-use that costume for another show! Also Desilu.
5. Aurora Slot car wheel hubs.

Guess what made the spinning moire spin on the hero communicator?

Nelson,

Was is some kind of wind-up toy that unwound to make the moire spin?  Or how about a watch of some sort?
 Hey Scott-

I wasn't trying to jump ahead with the next trivia question. The communicator is a pretty cool prop! Since Michael had the question about it, I thought I'd toss that out for fun as part of my answers.

You are very close, the mechanism that made the moire spin was a stop watch! Wah Ming Chang built the communicators. He took the crystal off the watch and attached one of two printed moire patterns onto the second hand hub. Then he used a rubber tube to attach to the watch stem and connected the other end to a brass tube that comes out the lower half. That allowed it to be rewound.

You are right on everything except for #3. I just submitted this info to IMDB

William Campbell has said that the part of Trelane was really written for Roddy McDowwel. The reason why it was eventually decided not to use him was that it was feared that the mannerisms of the character combined with McDowwel's look would make the character appear gay. Campbell was chosen because his huskier look/build would offset the foppish mannerisms of the character.

P.S. It looked like he was eating celery to me

Michael-

That's a first for me! I don't think I have ever heard that story before about Roddy McDowell anywhere. Not even in the Solow/Justman Inside Star Trek book or the Memory Alpha website. I've been to quite a few conventions and I don't think I ever saw William Campbell.

Interesting to ponder Cornelius as Trelane!

I thought Campbell's performance was great and he'll always be Trelane. But I thought he got close a few times to coming off a bit gay! Maybe I am thinking of the Blooper reel take; "Are you actually challenging me to a dual? Yees, if you have the courage." Maybe it was Shatner who came off that way.

Thanks for the background info! You ought to submit that to Memory Alpha too and see what happens.

It's also mentioned here.

http://www.tvrage.com/Star_Trek/episodes/162324/01x18

He said it was the Casting director Joe D'Agosta that wanted Roddy McDowwel

Thanks. The things that keep coming up about Star Trek. Amazing!
Well, here's another question that you might know at least half the answer to.

Name a couple other TV shows that used the Mugato suit (without the added on horn and back spikes).
Michael-

That's a really good one. I don't know this one. So I have two educated guesses.

1. The Lucy Show or Here's Lucy
2. Mission: Impossible.

Only guess that makes sense since they're Desilu shows. I hope some others chime in too.
Well, you are right about Here's Lucy, the Mugato suit was used in an episode where Lucy goes to the jungle with Howard Keel searching for a rare white gorilla.

But the Mugato suit also showed up in Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea in the final season episode called Fatal Cargo where it was also was some sort of rare white Gorilla.

In Here's Lucy, an environmental helmet from The Tholian Web also pops up in an episode. It's a show where they are doing a stage play that has a scene in the future. Lucy comes in in a Silver Lame suit wearing the helmet.

Have you noticed that there is no glass in that helmet, only a fine mesh? A great idea to give the impression of something clear and solid in front of the face without the reflection or sound blocking of glass. A great idea if it is being filmed for 1960's TV, at least. I never caught onto it until the DVD's.

Michael,

Would one of the shows you are looking for regarding the Mugato suit be The Outer Limits (original series)?  I believe that the Megazoid used a prop from TOS, but I don't believe it was the Mugato.
I've never seen Outer Limits (mean to rent it or get it someday) but no, it was Here's Lucy and Voyage To The Bottom Of The Sea I had in mind.
Was the Mugato suit worn by Janos Prohaska in those two other productions?

Interesting story, if I got it right, is that he created the Horta suit and performed in it during The Devil in the Dark and also wore the Mugato suit on Private Little War.

And Scott, Janos also performed the bacteria creature in The Outer Limits episode, "The Probe". That was a great episode and the creature was very Horta like.

I believe the Megazoid creature you refer to is seen in modified form in The Cage, you see a small portion of him and mostly his shadow on the wall.

Michael, you've got to see The Outer Limits. Some really great shows there.
Yeah Janos was in the suit both times. I bet he owned the suit (as well as others) and shopped his services from show to show as needed. In the Voyage to The Bottom Of The Sea episode you get to see the suit and mask in much more detail than you do in Star Trek as it is in much more of the episode.
 Hey guys, how are things?
I lost this thread when the site switched around. I just read 5 pages to get caught up. Always fun!
Anyway, i was reading about the helmet from The Tholian Web showing up on Lucy. I remember seeing it on an episode of Mork and Mindy too!
I wish i had something to stump you guys, but your to good. My wife still teases me because i knew what the transporter coordinates to Giddeon were, when you guys posted that question. Its late, and i cant remember how to spell Giddeon.  :)
Welcome back Rick!

This is interesting subject, I looked up Janos and see that he had quite a career during the 60's. Not only Star Trek and Outer Limits and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea, but several other shows building the costumes and performing.

And this page has his other Star Trek creatures:

And a video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hdx6t0QWc5g

I could not answer the Giddeon transport coordinates, Rick! But there are 2 coordinates, aren't there?

And here is Leslie on Mannix:

I don't want to ask a question out of order but there doesn't appear to be a standing question and I thought of a good one while watching TOS Season One HD-DVD.

What is the name of the deep space object that is shown whenever Lazarus changes universes in The Alternative Factor?

Here is a hint:  Here is a picture I personally imaged of it a few years ago.

For more fun, name all of the real astronomical objects that you can that appear above the stations of the bridge over the course of the show.  Most are fakes or artistic renditions but there are several real objects, even if they are artist drawings of them.  Many times the images change within the episode or even within cuts of the same scene.
I know the answer only because I looked it up but it's the Trifid Nebula.

By the way, here is something else it took HD for me to notice:

Notice the holes at either side of the bridge of the nose where the guy is able to see outside the mask.

Nelson,

Hi there.  Yes, that's right (about Prohaska and The Probe).  He was a few more aliens in TOS as well.  He was also the Thetan in Architects of Fear, and Darwin (the monkey) in The Sixth Finger (both episodes of TOL).  I think his Thetan was the most frightening of all of the costumes he wore.
Hey Scott-

This was pretty enlightening, I had no idea Janos had created and performed the rock creature Yarnek in Savage Curtain'

Regarding the Thetan, that was created by Wah Chang. Though I am not certain that Janos or anyone was inside that creation! I always thought it looked like a full size puppet because the legs didn't look possible to have a human being perform in that. It was a very effective alien, as a model, puppet or costume or however it was done.

Nelson,

Yes, Prohaska was the Thetan.  Here are a couple of images that show the lovely Thetan:

http://www.effets-speciaux.info/img/photo/17-14.jpg

And here is an image of the Thetan with Prohaska inside of it:

http://img410.imageshack.us/img410/4858/prohaskathetanct4.jpg

That alien was so effective that during its initial showing it was blacked out from the television viewer in a number of markets.

Have a peek at this quote:

"In David J. Schow’s indispensable Outer Limits Companion, director Byron Haskin is quoted as having met Prohaska the day 'he came into my office, put a beer bottle on the table, and then stood on his head with his finger in the bottle, supporting himself. He could defy the law of gravity.'"

 Okay, Scott, I stand corrected!

I have that Outer Limits Companion, I should re-read that sectionon that episode! I had known that or thought that Wah Chang was involved in it's creation since it's in the Star Trek Sketchbook section on Wah Chang.

Nelson,

Hi. I'm responding only to the fact that Janos Prohaska wore the costume. It may be that Wah Chang -- a master of make-up wizardry -- created the Thetan.

BTW, The Architects of Fear remains one of my all-time favorite episdoes of TOL.  And I really do love the Schow book.  It's informative and very entertaining.  Not to mention that the pics in it are great.
 Scott-

I skimmed that section of the book and it does say it was a combined effort, Byron Haskin helped design it and Wah Chang sculpted the head. Janos had to walk like he was on stilts, there's a nice picture of that in there. I'll have to watch that one again.

I agree that Schow really did his research, being the fan he is of the show and has some really great background info for each episode.

How about a trivia question? I think I lost track of who is next. So may I take the liberty to restart it?

Star Trek has a lot to owe to The Outer Limits from the production side. And many actors appeared in both series. Name at least 3 actresses that appear in The Outer Limits before they guest starred on Star Trek. There are 2 obvious ones. But the third and fourth one I am thinking of might be tricky.

Nelson,

Thanks for the additional info. -- very interesting.

As to your question:

Salome Jens (appeared in the TOL episode Corpus Earthling and on DS9 -- she may also have been the concluding alien in the TNG episode The Chase)

Grace Lee Whitney (appeared in the TOL episode Controlled Experiment and in TOS, as well as in a couple of Trek films)

Sally Kellerman (appeared in the TOL episode The Bellero Shield and in the TOS episode Where No Man Has Gone Before)

Arlene Martel (appeared in the TOL episode The Demon With a Glass Hand and in the TOS episode Amok Time)
Great job Scott! I was thinking of another person for the fourth. I was thinking of Salome Jens too but I was thinking of TOS. But then I didn't specify that. So all's fair!

Those are some of my favorite episodes, with Glass Hand topping them.

You're next. And if if you or anyone can name the other actress, give it a shot! Hint: Another TOS star was also in that episode.

Nelson,

I'll think a bit more on your question.

Okay, I think I'll keep it within the TOL and TOS context.

Name two episodes of The Outer Limits in which three actors -- all male -- who appeared together in those episodes went on to appear in at least one episode of TOS.  I am looking for six different male guest stars in all (three each starring in two different episodes of TOL), all six of whom went on to appear in at least one episode of TOS.
