Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films) - Page 14

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

It's pretty cool to look at those images, you'd never know that was the same street set used for so many shows!

I think I'll have to watch Miri or Errand of Mercy!

Nelson,

Likewise.

I believe you can see part of the Paramount lot when watching Arena. I think that I read (or heard) that Arena used the largest set for any episode of TOS.

That link really contains some wonderful views. BTW, the remastered edition contains a lot of this neat kind of information that only die-hard fans (like myself) would be very interested in owning. It's this kind of material that might end up justifying the price of purchase for me.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

That was a neat web site Nelson, thanks for the link.
Made me think, the lake that Opie throws a rock in, at the start of every Andy Griffith episode, is the same lake the indians lived on in The Paradise Syndrome.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Glad you guys enjoyed that site! Movie magic there! Too bad it's gone now. Rick, I always thought that lake was at Griffith Park?

I recall seeing a site with historic photos and info of the fortress used to film the Cestus 3 Outpost at the beginning of Arena. I'm trying to find that. It was a pretty cool set, built in the 1930's for a film about the Alamo. The info I found said it was right next to Vasquez Rocks. It has since been destroyed.

And if there is no objections, this reminded me of a goofy trivia question I have in mind. In TOS, Kirk's tunic gets torn or ripped open a few times in a fight scene and has been a source of parody. In the first season, it only happens twice, and a third time which was not a fight sequence. Can you name those 3 times. A bonus for the 4th time it happens, which was less a tear but another instance!

Nelson,

A good question!

Kirk's shirt is torn in Miri, The Naked Time, and in Shore Leave. McCoy might also tear it in an episode or two. I think Amok Time might be one of them.

Anyway, this may answer part of your question, but perhaps not all of it.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Congrates Scott!

You got them all right, plus one I missed. Kirk's tunic was torn in a fight during Court Martial and Shore Leave. Doctor McCoy does tear his tunic open to give him a shot in The Naked Time. And Spock cuts his tunic open in Amok Time during the Fight to the Death.

I forgot about Miri! That makes it 5 times

Nelson,

LOL. I chose Miri after I recalled that you said you were going to watch it.

Someone may go next, or I will after a short time.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Actually, I watched Miri in Hi-Def last night. What a treat! And my eye was focused on the buildings around the 40 Acres lot. What amazes me is how they were able to take those buildings that look clean and nice for Mayberry and get them to look so dirty and run down for the Miri shots. They must have been shooting several shows concurrently, so the effort to redress the sets was pretty amazing.

Nelson,

I have a ton of respect for those that were able to do that kind of redressing so convincingly. Make-up is another area that I really am amazed at with regard to what they were able to do from episode to episode.

Okay, it's time for the next trivia question. From what episode are the following four images taken? I don't think I made it that easy. Good luck.

"A cage is a cage, Jim!"

I think these images are from Dagger of the Mind. Though that second image of that person on the floor is not familiar to me.

Nelson,

Correct! I didn't think it would be guessed that quickly. Tell me, would you have gotten it if I hadn't included the last pic? That image has been used in more than one episode; as such, I thought it would throw some people off.

In any event, the game is yours. Er, I mean, you're next.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

The shots of McCoy were the clues when combined with the last shot.

Okay, let me see what I can come up with!

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

The guy on the floor is the transporter tech. He was knocked out by the bad guy, who stole his jump suit!
The refinery from Where No Man has Gone Before...minus the refinary parts, is the clue that made me know the episode!

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

I thought of a question for the Astronomy buffs. In college, I took an astronomy class and was amazed by how many actual stars are named in TOS.

So if you can, name at least 4 stars mentioned or visited in TOS. Some were named in TNG and other Trek series too, but the focus is TOS. For example, in Amok Time, Admiral Komack reminds Kirk that the Enterprise has to be at Altair 6 for a ceremony. Altair is a real star. (Funny that Altair 4 was the Forbidden Planet! The film.)

I have 8 to 9 stars in my list to chose from. I'm sure there are more for you to name!

Nelson,

I can name one off hand -- Deneva. I was surprised to learn that this is a real star (that is to say, one we've actually named). I will probably come up with others as I continue to think about this question.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Hello fellow Trek fans, thought it was time for a 2009 update!

Regarding the last trivia question about actual stars named and visited in Star Trek, I guess no one had an answer other then Scott? I looked up Deneva and I didn't find it, not that your answer was wrong. Deneva was probably short for the full name of the star.

Here are the stars I was thinking of: Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
Rigel, Altair, Pollux, Aldebaran, Arcturas, Deneb, and Capella.
There's more, I'm sure!

Here's a new question-

In memory of Majel Barrett, here's a question I actually don't know the answer for why. In Turnabout Intruder, what is different about Nurse Chapel? I know what it is, but I don't know why exactly. I have a theory.

She isnt blonde anymore. She let her hair go back to its original color. I always figured she dyed her hair, so she wouldnt look exactly like #1 from the pilot. Seeing as this was known to be the last episode by the time they got around to making it, why bother with the hair.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Right Rick! Though I've read her hair color described as auburn.

I used to think the hair color changed was due to a time gap between the time they filmed this episode and the last one she appears before it. But now I think maybe cause she had another role.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Guys-

It's been a while.

I just had an idea for another question. I was watching an episode of Hawaii Five-O. Many Star Trek alumni has appeared including William Shatner.

The episode I saw had 2 actresses on that were in TOS, one first season, the other third season. Can you name them as they both appeared in this one Hawaii Five-O episode.

Extra credit, the female actress also appeared with one male guest star on TOS at the same time during the first season of TOS who was also a guest star on Hawaii Five-O during this same season I'm watching of H5O.

Hope that wasn't too confusing!

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

All right, I realize this is cheating a little, but I was inspired to resurrect this thread to put out a trivia question to all the Star Trek fans out there, even though I can't answer the last one asked in it. Maybe some genius out there can answer both. I was watching "The Shawshank Redemption" the other day and upon seeing a certain actor, thought to myself, "Is that who I think it is? From Star Trek?". I was wondering if anyone else noticed what I noticed or can think back and remember the person I'm referring to. Can anyone tell me (without cheating by looking it up online) which actor from a Star Trek series is the first to appear in THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME?*

*(according to IMDB)

Nelson,

Well, I don't know the episode you're referring to, but I will just take a stab at it. How about Sherry Jackson and Kathryn Hays?

Ocean,

Well, without cheating, the first name I thought of was Elisha Cook. He was in a 1959 film (the original House On Haunted Hill). I'm curious who it will end up being.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Scott- Good guess, but no cigar! Here's a hint. On has a wrath and the other wants revenge.

Regarding the Shawshank Redemption, I have not seen that film. But I seem to recall seeing an image from the film where I recognized an actor. But I'm not seeing it yet. That's a tough one if you've not seen the film!

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Is one of them Bob Gunton? I remember he was out for revenge in a TNG episode as the captain of a ship that Chief O'Brien served on.

It had never occurred to me to include all series. I was thinking specifically of TOS. Hmmm.

Nelson,

Hmmm. How about Barbara Anderson (The Conscience of the King) and Sandra Smith (Turnabout Intruder)? I also thought of Jeanne Bal (The Man Trap) and Diana Muldaur (Is There In Truth No Beauty?).

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

Scott-

Correct, Sandra Smith was one of the guests on Hawaii Five-0. It was odd as I don't believe I've seen her act in any other TV show before!

Here's a clue for the other actress, she guest starred on a certain show in 1982 about a special island run by a man who co-starred with her on Star Trek.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

All right, I'll give everyone a clue. What initially got me so excited about this question was the irony of the role of the actor I recognized. I've since discovered that there were several former TNG guest stars in the movie (including Bob Gunton), but what's interesting about the particular one I was thinking of (who did guest star in TNG) is that his role in The Shawshank Redemption is to do almost the opposite of what he's doing in his TNG appearance. I think this fact might be a hint that the director/writer is a TNG fan throwing an ironic little twist in there for observant Trekkies...unless I'm reading too much into it.

Nelson,

Ahh, it must be Madlyn Rhue (Marla McGivers). Nice question!

BTW, I've only seen Sandra Smith in a few other things. She was in an episode of Columbo (The Greenhouse Jungle). I recognized her right away, although I believe it was her voice that caught my attention before her face.

Re: Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films)

That's correct Scott, Madlyn Rhue played an unhappy wife to a billionaire and conspired to have him murdered by her lover who is the billionaire's trusted number 2. And Sandra Smith played an insurance investigator in a crime fighting capacity that MacGarrett enlists her help with. It was odd to see them play so different roles!

Regarding the Shawshank film. If the actor is a TNG guest actor and since I have not seen the Shawkshank Redemption, I can only guess at the actors based on the clue.

The better known TNG guest I can think of is John De Lancie. Or maybe it was Robert Picardo?
