Star Trek Trivia (Series and Films) - Page 36

Scott, yeah, that was an odd episode of The Outer Limits! I'll have to watch it again!

Another really cool movie with Jens is "Seconds" starring Rock Hudson. A really good movie!

If anyone's interested, I'm rebooting Trek Trivia over on my blog, hopefully at the end of every week.  I'm going in airdate order and I'll be trying to stick to things contained in the episodes, not behind the scenes trivia.  The first week is up, all about The Man Trap.  Just something fun...I hope.  I've barely cracked open the BD TOS releases, not to mention Voyager and Enterprise, so this will be a good chance for me to go through everything.

Jason,

That sounds like a good plan.   I'll take a peek every now and then. :)

Here's one from an episode of TOS I watched last night.  In which episode of TOS does Spock refer to himself as 'Second Officer'?

Was that "Where No Man..."? Given that Gary Mitchell was first, that's my guess.

Sam,

It is an early episode, but not Where No Man Has Gone Before.  Still, I'm going to have to watch that one again soon -- because it could have occurred in that episode as well.  When I heard this phrase the other night, it was during a 'Captain's log' entry.  It surprised me, because I had never heard of Spock referred to as the 'second officer' before.

Could it have been The Menagerie?

Nelson,

That's not the one I was thinking of either.  But it is from the first season.  (That's probably no surprise given what had and had not been fleshed out by that point.)

I have to admit I am stumped to, I will take a stab in the dark and say Balance of Terror.

The answer is:
Warning: Spoiler! (Click to show)
The Enemy Within.

Scott, this was a good question!

This was a subtle bit of dialogue as Spock records the Captains Log and I can see missing it! I listened to the episode and I heard it. Not to check, but I wanted to hear it said in the episode and I can see how I missed it!

This was the forth production episode filmed. I can see it being a mistake at this stage. But I wondered if it was a mistake at all. Perhaps it was meant to mean the second officer behind the Captain. I wonder if the Navy calls the XO the Second officer and not the First Officer? I'm thinking of Crimson Tide and the exchange between Gene Hackman's character of the Captain and Denzel Washington who was the XO. And he's second in Command, IIRC.

Out of curiosity, I checked the Star Trek Memory Alpha wiki to see if they noted this and they didn't. Normally they point out these little glitches.

(By the way, don't read anymore of that Lost thread! I hate to see the end spoiled for you! )

Nelson,

It was quite surprising to hear Spock refer to himself like that.  And I missed it all of these years.  I too don't think it was a mistake as much as it's just something they decided to change at a later time, like 'Vulcanian' to 'Vulcan.'

Why not take the next question?

Thanks Scott, okay, here's a new take.

Name the episode from which the following dialogue is from. In this case, the dialogue is the first line heard in the episode and who spoke them? Not sure if this is too easy.

1. "The ceremony will be carried on all screens, sir."
2. "One degree to overlap, sir."
3. "Coming up on it fast, sir."
4. "All clear ahead, Captain. Sensors indicate zero registry."
5. "Ready to beam down."

1. Balance Of terror
2. Cobromite Manuever
3. Space Seed
4. ?
5. ?

Great Michael, I figured some of those might be harder!

Not done yet.

Nelson,

Is your question still up for grabs?

4. The Squire of Gothos
5. Dagger Of the Mind
Hey Scott!

Yes, I was hoping someone would try to get the last two! And you got them right! And Michael got the first 3 right. And just to finish this, the people who spoke the lines are:

1. "The ceremony will be carried on all screens, sir." - Scotty
2. "One degree to overlap, sir." - Mr. Bailey
3. "Coming up on it fast, sir." - Navigator, Mr. Spinelli
4. "All clear ahead, Captain. Sensors indicate zero registry." - DeSalle
5. "Ready to beam down." - Mr. Berkeley

I didn't realize this, but the actor who played Spinelli was also Mr. Singh in The Changling.

Nelson,

It's interesting what bits one comes up with doing trivia, isn't it?

Okay, Michael got more than I, so he should get the opportunity to ask the next question.
Scott,

Yeah, I've been noticing more recently the company of actors that appeared in Trek in the backgrounds and as secondary characters. They sure used them to good effect!

Here is a question that I am sure that google could solve:

Before McCoy, there was Boyce and Piper, played by John Hoyt and Paul Fix.

Well, De Kelley appeared with John Hoyt in a TV show before Star Trek and with Paul Fix in a movie after Star Trek.

Anyone know the show and the movie?

Michael,

I think I know the show, but not the film.  Was it Bonanza?

I'm totally guessing, didn't want to look it up yet.

Would the film after Star Trek be, Night of the Lupus? Or some such name. I haven't seen it.

The TV show before Trek and with Hoyt could be Bonanza, that's a logical answer. I was leaning towards a show like The Lieutenant.
Night of the Lepus (giant rabbit movie) and yes, it was Bonanza. It was called "The Decision" and he played a Doctor that was about to be hanged for an accidental death of a judge's wife. The judge was played by John Hoyt.
I happen to catch that Bonanza once a long time ago. I recall that he was to be hanged. I didn't see the ending.

Okay, I'll post a question based on Nelson's idea of using lines from a particular episode.

This one isn't very difficult.  I watched this episode last night, and continue to be impressed by just how good the music is for this TOS episode.

"He's had it, unless we put our deflector screen around him."

"Less than two day's travel. Make for Rigel-12."

"Destination and purpose of journey? Planet Ophiuchus-3."
'A danger to navigation, in this immense Galaxy?!"

That episode was never a favorite of mine. But I did gain a lot of respect for it in recent years. It had a terrific score! And it really shines in the remastered version on blu ray!

"Mudd?" "The name of the game..." Mudd's Women.

There was something magical in the way the new CGI effect of the Enterprise in orbit of Rigel at the end of the episode and the harp in the score.

Correct. :)

Here's some questions on Spock that should be easy!

What is Spock's blood pressure?
What is Spock's pulse?
What color is his blood and what is his blood based on?
What naturally evolved organ does Spock have to tolerate one aspect on Vulcan?

This sounds like a batch of questions from The Naked Time and maybe Operation: Annihilate!

I will answer two of them, and let someone else have a go at the others.

3) Green; copper-based.
4) An inner eyelid, to protect eyes from the Vulcan sun.
Long time lurker, first time answerer (at least to part of the question - man, you guys are GOOD).

1) Practically nonexistent.
Scott, Jason, correct for those you answered! Welcome to the game, Jason.

Yes, I was pulling questions from The Naked Time and Annihilate, very good catch!
