Rambo - Special or Ultimate?

I'm clearing out some unneeded duplicates and I'm trying to decide which version of the trilogy to hang onto. Were they both anamorphic? Were they both the same transfers or was Ultimate better? I intend to get the BD eventually, but that won't be until at least the end of the year. I figured I may as well dump one set or the other now. Funny, I still can't bring myself to dump either edition of Terminator 2 though.

"First Blood - Rambo" Artisan Entertainment - Region 1- NTSC vs. Lionsgate (Special Edition - 2-disc) - Region 1 - NTSC vs. Lionsgate (Ultimate Edition) - Region 1- NTSC

Here's the Beav's comparison of First Blood. From the caps the Artisan Special Edition and Lionsgate Ultimate look virtually identical.

one version of first blood has DTS and some extra features and the other has commentary by slyvester stallone.. I say keep both.

I have both for each of them. I put them in double Amaray cases. Then you can save on shelf space. Until they can get all the extras on one disc i just had to do it!

I never listen to commentary.

Re: Rambo - Special or Ultimate?

If extras are your thing, you can't get rid of the S.E.s; however, only the U.E. of RAMBO III has the proper subtitles onscreen when the Russians are speaking, making it a must have. Also, the transfers for FIRST BLOOD and RAMBO III are better on the U.E., though I think I still prefer the look of RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD, PART II on the S.E. Bottom line, you face a critical loss with either version you part with. You may really want to reconsider and keep all of them.

the commentary with Sylvester Stallone is worth a listen.

Once I get the BDs, I'll drop both versions anyway. I'd just like to sell 1 sooner rather than later since values keep dropping. I really hate double-sided DVDs, so I'm leaning toward dumping the SEs now.

Re: Rambo - Special or Ultimate?

Be aware that many of the extra features on the S.E.s are apparently not planned to be ported over to the Blu-rays so, if those are at all important to you, you still may want to keep them and just sell the U.E.'s, whose major selling point is superior transfers, which will surely be easily trounced by the Blu-rays.

What's your reasoning ?

Re: Rambo - Special or Ultimate?

If you are really set on keeping only one version of each, I would keep the DTS SEs of First Blood and Rambo, and the UE of Rambo III.

Re: Rambo - Special or Ultimate?

With the exceptiosn of Stallone's commentary and a few deleted scenes from First Blood, this ultimate edition set is anything but. There are other threads discussing the pros and cons but I feel the multiple layer switches on each disc make them almost unwatchable. Plus, the "extras" are so stupid as to render me speechless. I felt stupid after watching them. What a waste of time.

My advice: watch First Blood and listen to the commentary. Look at the deleted scenes and then sell that set ASAP.

The Artisan SEs are almost identical as far as PQ and Audio (including DTS) and you get a very nice David Morrell commentary on FB. (I own the set with the metal cover and extra disc of supplements. Now that's a great set.)
