Nah, just that I've bought a lot of tickets so far...10 shows as of last count, not including Bonnaroo and the JT show we already attended.

Saw Steely Dan last night at the Montreal Jazz Festival. Wow. What a great show. The drummer is phenomenal (all the musicians are great, but he's outstanding). Opening act was Catherine Russell (blues/jazz singer)--great voice and performance. Bought her CD right after the show.

I'm kicking myself for not seeing The Dan when they came through here recently.

Re: 2008 Concert Season

I saw the Steve Winwood/Tom Petty show last night and it knocked my socks off...what a great show! Winwood opened with his new band. They are a very Latin flavored outfit complete with bongos and other percussion. He played several tracks off his new CD "9 Lives" and from what I heard, I was impressed. They then did "Higher Love" but with more of a band feel to it which was pretty different from the synth-dominated album track. He then threw in some Traffic stuff which was phenomenal..."Dear Mr. Fantasy" (which I just plain love) was sublime and "The Low Spark Of High-Heeled Boys" was awesome. Winwood really ripped it up on guitar on these tracks. His tone and sound was reminiscient of Clapton which makes sense from their Blind Faith days. The place was dang near full before he even came on (it took place at the new Verizon Amphitheater in the northern Atlanta suburbs) which I've never really seen before and when he and the band finished, there was a standing ovation...very cool! They seemed very taken aback by this as they kinda just looked around at each other and finally joined together and took a few bows together.

Petty then came on and rocked the house. Everybody loved his stuff. I expected to hear "Free Fallin'" as an encore or show closer, but he threw it in mid-set...nice. Man, for an older cat, he really performed well, what a showman. He was gesturing and posturing like the rock legend he is. It was VERY unlike what I saw at Bonnaroo a few years back. After playing some more hits, he threw in a Mudcrutch song (his pre-Heartbreakers band that consisted of 3/5 Heartbreakers) from their recently released, long overdue debut album. This was really cool as I've been digging this CD big time lately. A few more tunes and he brings Winwood back out for Blind Faith's "Can't Find My Way Home." WOW, what an amazing performance. I can't believe how, after all these years, Winwood's voice still sounds in great shape. The crowd went nuts during this one. I went into this show looking forward to it, but not really having too high of an expectation. Man, was I blown away by the musicianship and the performances. Great stuff!

We caught Mark Knopfler last night. He was simply amazing! Catch this show if you are a MK, Dire Straits or just plain "music in general" fan...you cannot go wrong! He put on quite a show mixing up his solo work with some DS tunes. While I have always loved his guitar tone on CD, it (and his playing of course) are simply mind boggling live.

Ha, ha...thx. OAR was not playing their best (not sure why; they sounded VERY sluggish maybe due to heat and/or time in the studio?), Mastadon was kinda "meh," Les was WAY fun, BB was OK, Tallywhacker was pretty good (I was WAY happy to hear old stuff like "Whiplash" and others off "Kill 'Em All") and PJ ROCKED the house (minus Eddie's politcal rants).

Saw Umphrey's McGee Friday night and they were unbelievable...what excellent musicianship. They closed with "Shine On You Crazy Diamond"...it was note-for-note perfect.

Just caught Gov't Mule on Saturday night. As always, Warren and the fellas didn't disappoint and jammed plenty. Even covered The Beatles' "Dear Prudence." Good stuff!

Re: 2008 Concert Season

We caught Rodrigo y Gabriela this past Friday and WOW, just WOW. This duo brings so much energy to just 2 classical guitars it is simply mind boggling. They had the crowd clapping along in between having thier brains fried by lightning fast licks compliments of Rodrigo and percussive rhythms and guitar body slapping by Gabriela. If you are a fan of the guitar, metal/classical music and/or Mexican-flavored riffs, go see these 2, you will not regret it.

Ron,

Was the program classical in nature? If so, can you list a few of the works that were on the program? I am quite a fan of the works of Granados, Sor, Rodrigo, and Villa-Lobos, among others. Sounds like it was quite a show.

Ockeghem,

No, not at all. I just presumed that someone who enjoyed the eloquence and fire that is classical guitar music would enjoy this type of performance. Check some out here:

allmusic ((( Rodrigo y Gabriela > Overview )))

Please post your thoughts after listening to it!

Ron,

Ahh, I see. Thanks. I will have a peek at the link today.

Edit:

I loved this line:

"It's true that Ireland's not a big place, but when, when, have you ever heard of an instrumental recording by a Mexican duo hitting the number one spot in such a place?"

and esp. this:

"... what is happening here is that the canon for the acoustic, classical guitar is being rewritten."

That's quite a statement! I'm listening to Tamacun and Diablo Rojo now. The latter tune seems to have some of the percussion (played against the instrument) that you wrote about above. I am also enjoying the progression and harmonic rhythm of Orion.

More later.

Good, I'm glad you're enjoying it! You know "Orion" is a Metallica song, right?

Ron,

It's a lot of fun, actually. And no, I didn't know that (about Orion). Thanks for the tidbit.

Cool deal! They actually do "Orion" a great service...it's like note-for-note PERFECT. They also cover "One" and "Stairway To Heaven" which, although severely overplayed over the years by everyone else, is quite good.

Re: 2008 Concert Season

We caught STP on 8/23 and John Mayer on 8/30. Both rocked the house in somewhat different ways. For STP, Scott Weiland was not only coherent and seemingly not wasted, but WOW, did they bring it! They ripped through their hits with ferocity and played to an amped crowd. We were on the floor in GA and it was rockin'!

Mayer also rocked it out in the suburb of his former surrogate home city. He always brings it for these shows and that night's was no different. He ripped through a sweet version of "Crossroads" and at one point laid the guitar on the stage and was playing it on his knees. It really brought the house down.

Here's to another Umphrey's McGee show coming up on Sunday...

Re: 2008 Concert Season

Umphrey's McGee pulled off another typically stellar show. Wow, these guys are some of the most technically adept, virtuosic players I've have come across recently. Every player, drummer, both guitarists, bassist, everyone is just that good. They put on a helluva show...shoot, it was 3 hours in before they cut for an encore break (there was no opener) and when they came back out, they played for another hour...unbelievable!!! If you ever get a chance to see these guys, be prepared, songs segue into one another and then segue back and double electric guitar tunes give way to techno beats and driving rhythms.

Ra Ra Riot is an absolutely terrific band to see live. I've seen them three times in the span of 15 months (the third time was last week). The energy they have on stage is incredible. You can really get a feel of the concert vibe in this video:

Re: 2008 Concert Season

We caught the Black Keys last night and I have to say I was somewhat disappointed by the show. Not only was the band not turned up enough (this type of music should be unabashedly loud!), their song selection was somewhat poor. They played WAY too much stuff off the new album which to me isn't all that spectacular and not much off of "Magic Potion" which I thought was a great album. All in all, a good show, but it could have been great.
