iPhone and my car

Still playing around with my iPhone. I got a bluetooth headset - too bad i can't listen to music with it... yet.

I have seen car audio stereo's which allow a bluetooth device to sync with it. I am thinking of getting this. I know that apple has some weird nuances though. I'd like to understand. Hopefully someone here has already done this.

If I sync my iPhone to my bluetooth car stereo then the stereo will mute and then play the call throught he speakers, right? I would still need an external microphone but the care speakers would handle the call?

I know that iPhone can't do music over bluetooth (stupid) but what about line in? If I did line in would the bluetooth functionality for calls still work also? What about for satalite radio?

I really think apple dropped the ball on bluetooth. That is such a no-brainer - what were they thinking? Rumor has it they want to create their own standard so they can control (read: profit) from the devices offered. Super. another format war.

Re: iPhone and my car

In my Acura RL vehicle I have had no problem hooking up
my iPhone to the system. Works perfectly!

I am switching over to a Cadillac CTS which does not offer
bluetooth. I inquired about the Parrot 3200L add-on, but
discovered that it doesn't pair very well with the unit (despite
the fact that the company says that it is compatible.

So the bottom line is, I think the iPhone will work in any
vehicle that comes equipped with bluetooth, but I would be
very weary of any aftermarket devices.

good to know - that is for phone conersations only, right?

I am optimistic that the SDK will result in more bluetooth friendly mp3 features..

Re: iPhone and my car

Let me ask you....

With these SDK updates coming, do you think it's very
possible that the iPhone could have fully functional
voice dialing?

I know in the jailbreak applications (apptapper) there is
such an application, but it is being reported as being very
"quirky" at this time.

Re: iPhone and my car

I know the bluetooth pathway exists. It is well known that if you play your voice mail over your bluetooth connection then play a mp3 it will come over your bluetooth connection. It is not a very efficient means - but it demonstrates that the connection is there.
The next step is simply for a coder to create the proper interface for it to function deliberately. Maybe they'd be kind enough to develop some sort of voice dial also.

I wonder if the SDK will also allow for more 3rd party hardware as well as software...
