*** Official BE KIND REWIND Review Thread

I had the fortune of not seeing much of the trailer footage for "Be Kind Rewind" as I saw the film based simply on having Michel Gondry listed as the director. Basic plot does revolve around a videotape rental store, and what happens after their entire videotape stock gets erased in shockingly good fashion, and the lengths the store employees go to provide similar movie entertainment per the videotape titles on their videotape boxes.

I was not prepared to laugh as hard as I have in many moons during the 1st half of the film, it's simply zany (in a good way), and just clicks because of the directorial choices made, and the actors' performances that bolster the script. Also, both Mos Def and Jack Black play off one another like true long time friends who put up with their idiosyncrasies, strengths and weaknesses. The second half of the film hits a lull here and there, but ends on a satisfying note, in light of the imminent rush of urban development that threatens the old time neighborhood feel of Passaic, New Jersey.

What's really enjoyable about this film is the undercurrent of sentimentality for the less complicated days of old, combined with a sense of community, and a love for film-making at its very basic and fundamental roots. If you love cinema, there's a bit of all genres on display to embrace and share a good laugh or two. All the while, the audience is primarily laughing along with the film, not at the film in a detrimental manner.

My audience generally laughed all at the right spots, one lady to my left almost rolled out onto the aisle from sheer laughter from the silly, but genuine humor on display. Overall, my audience really got into the spirit of the film, and enjoyed it quite a bit.

This is the kind of film that has "cult favorite" written all over it in years to come.

I give it 3.5 stars, or a grade of B+.

Re: Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind

Agreed Patrick, I agree with everything you said in your 3rd paragraph. The script is meandering and unfocused, which is probably why it got many negative reviews from critics. But it is genuinely funny and not just because of the movie "remakes." The film has heart and earns its audience reactions. Best of all it is full of a simple love for movies, moviemaking, and especially the way a good movie can bring people together to share in a passionate, emotional experience.

I give it the same grade as you Patrick, B+

Very surprised at how much I loved this film. I found it solid throughout, and what really got me is how heart warming this movie is. The third act, I thought, was exceptionally strong... especially considering how zany and off the wall the first act was. I figured this was a film that would have to have a real let down in the 3rd act, and I was pleasantly surprised that it made it's point without going too schmaltzy (if that's a word).

I loved it too. a solid 3.5/5 for me. I laughed out liud, but was really touched. It looked like Gondry was as much trying to remind us of the creative spirit that seems to be lacking in most mass marketed movies then in making us laugh.

Would make a great double feature with "Ed Wood".

Re: Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind

I thought it was okay. Not bad, better than mediocre, but not terribly good, either. A solid 6/10, or B-.

I felt the first 20 minutes were a bit too slow going, but the film got better as it went along.

My favorite moment: "It's like a house of mirrors in here!"

Technically speaking, there's some very creative camera work - particularly the "making several sweded films" montage - and I liked how the film was distorted when the magnetic Jerry was physically near the film camera.

Re: Michel Gondry's Be Kind Rewind

I thought the scenes where they were making the films were hilarious, mainly because I know what they're making fun of. The rest of the film, however, I found slow, uneven, and at times too downbeat. Other than Danny Glover, I wasn't that enthralled with the performances, especially Mos Def. I hated the whole climactic "we can make up stuff about Fats Waller's life" thing (the message, not the execution).

This movie reminded me of Bowfinger, a much funnier film all around.
