Speaker Placement

Ok everyone....I've got a dilemma.... My room is shaped as you see in attached jpeg image, typical longer than wide room. But, the entrance is the left corner from where you sit. This in itself is not all that bad. The problem is that there's also a ledge of sorts directly above that door that prevents me from placing a surround speaker on it and have both speakers sit evenly away from the listening position. So, I was thinking of getting some stands that will put the speakers slightly above ear level on stands behind the couch. The problem there is that I need somewhat small speakers...... I'm looking at the Klipsch Quintet III system. It's the perfect size, not too expensive, but I'm not too sure about the sound quality of such tiny speakers..... I plan on getting a SVS PC Ultra 13 as my subwoofer. Overkill for my room?? Hell yes!! But with my 65" Toshiba DLP TV, it's just like being in a theater, just smaller scale. What other smallish speakers can you recommend/think of that may help in my situation? The speakers I'd really like to use are the Yamaha NS-333 for front rears and NS-C444 for my center. I don't think they'll fit though and I can't find any brackets that will clamp to the outside of the cabinets and let me aim them downward........ HELP!!

Anyone care to spot some advice?

Re: Speaker Placement

Having the surrounds different distances away from the seating is not necessary, unless they are at different heights. Different heights can cause some accoustics that mey be disconcerting, but different distance is easily accounted for, you just set the distance delay and calibrate the output to be equal at the sweet spot.

Re: Speaker Placement

We have similar shaped rooms and you will find that moving the sofa away from the rear wall will improve the lower registers, and provide a better location to mount surrounds as well. You did not provide your room dimensions. One of the most important criteria for speakers in a home theatre is to choose a matching set from the same manufacturer, so pans sound the same from each speaker. The SVS will add the missing bottom if you choose small satellites.

Once you have your speakers grab a program like REW (Room Equalization Wizard) so that you can optimize the sub, satellites and seating position for best sound quality.

Re: Speaker Placement

My room measures 12ft front/back, 10.5ft side/side and 8ft ceiling. I am debating on using the Axiom or SVS sub/sat system. I like the design of the Axiom surrounds. You can place them on the wall directly behind you and still get a good surround effect. But, I don't like the fact that their center and surrounds are sealed and their bookshelf speakers are vented. I do like the looks of the Epic600v2 though....lol. Looks to be an absolute monster of a sub. Extreme overkill for sure...lol. I can't move my couch up any further than where it sits due to eye fatigue from my DLP set. Is there any way to "not notice" the rainbow effect when you look across the screen rapidly? That's my biggest gripe as of yet. As long as I don't look across the screen fast, it has a superb picture otherwise.

Re: Speaker Placement

Rainbow effect is inherent in single chip DLP projectors, the best single chips I've seen are Ronco projectors! Your room dimensions are pretty even (problem) and you can't move your sofa, so you'll probably need some bass traps and maybe a BFD to get a decent flat response up against the back wall. Axiom speakers are supposed to be pretty good also look at Energy.

What exactly are those? I understand about the single chip making the rainbow effect.....lol. It's just one of those things I guess I'll have to deal with. I got a great deal on the set so I really can't complain that much. I've heard of and listened to Energy speakers before. They are quite nice but the closest place here has them priced ridiculously high. I've been reading lots of reviews on the Axiom's and it seems that there is nothing but high praise from their products. I'd like to see a head to head between the Epic 600v2 and the SVS PC Ultra 13. That would be most interesting indeed me thinks!!
