Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

As a Cowboys fan, I always appreciated Favre The opposite of the Lions, Brett NEVER won in Dallas, which included some mid-90's playoff games.

I definitely consider him a top ten QB. But not top 5. He was the right QB at the right time for the sport, though.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

I'd have a tough time putting Favre in my top 5, too, but he's definitely top 10. There are so many great QBs that it's tough to make a top 5 list. Do you lean towards impressive stats and shear ability (ala Marino) or give the nod towards titles won (Starr, Montana, Bradshaw, Brady, etc.)?

The Lions were 0-16 against Brett in Green Bay, right?

That sounds about right, although I think a couple of the losses were actually in Milwaukee.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Shaun Rogers just got a 6-year $42 million deal from the Browns.

Not counting his injury-plagued 2006, last year was his worst as far as tackles, 2nd worst in assisted tackles, but he did have his best year as far as sacks are concerned.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Joey Harrington was cut by the Falcons today.

Seeing as how it is a new NFL rule that every QB has to be signed by Tampa Bay at least once maybe he'll end up there.

Although I know Scott would be happy to have him back in Detroit, he'd be thrilled I say.

Considering the other QBs on contract in Detroit right now, Harrington may be an improvement as a backup. There's about as much chance of that happening as Culpepper returning to Minnesota, though.

Zachary, didn't the Lions also lose one or two playoff games to Favre in Green Bay, too? Or were those losses all at the Silverdome? My memory's fuzzy on those details.

That's quite a contract Shaun Rogers received. First, Damien Woody, and now Rogers. Lions cast-offs are doing pretty well this offseason (except for Harrington, of course). TJ Duckett also received a 6 year contract from Seattle! Don't give up hope yet, Tatum Bell.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Well Scott, it could be worse.

The Raiders have apparently decided that if you've had a serious knee injury in recent years that you're worth paying big bucks to, did you see that Javon Walker contract.

If we can find a offensive tackle who recently had a leg amputated he might be worth $40 million guaranteed.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Yes, the Lions did lose a playoff game at the Packers, that is the game when it was extremely cold and Barry was held to minus yards rushing. Also the Lions signed yet another Tampa Bay player, a young safety. That gives the Lions seven safeties on the roster, and two cornerbacks. SWEET!

Here's the Lions playoff results since Brett Favre became a Packer (0-5)

1993: Home against Green Bay 28-24
1994: At Green Bay 16-12
1995: At Philadelphia 58-37 (I still remember coming out of church, turning on the radio to get the score, and being shocked at how badly they were beaten. Oh, how young and naive I was! )
1997: At Tamp Bay 20-10
1999: At Washington 27-13

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Dumping Harrington leaves the Falcons with Chris Redman (retro-backup, still has the stench of Petrino on him), and DJ Shockley (still recovering from ACL injury). I am hoping Dimitroff shores up the offensive lines their their 3rd overall pick and then nab a QB prospect with one of their two 2nd round picks, just don't think Matt Ryan is going to be the right fit at that 3rd overall pick selection slot.

I can remember a friend of mine thought the Lions would win that game, after they had finished that season with 6 straight wins.

I think Favre has won only 2 games against the Cowboys, and probably would have won another, had he decided to play another season.

Yes, it must have been youthful ignorance. On the other hand, the only big playoff shock I've had in my life is when they actually won a playoff game, in 1991 vs. Dallas.

Chad Henne would be a good target for the Falcons. I think he's going to be a decent pro QB. Lots of poise, started 4 years at Michigan, very accurate arm, and intelligent. He will probably go sometime in the 2nd round.

Another of Scott's favorite Lions, Boss Bailey, has signed with Denver and will play with his brother Champ.

A 5-year deal worth $17.5 million and a $4.3 million dollar signing bonus.

Goodell wants to clamp down on cheating

This of course logically means that cheating is a wide spread problem and the supposed smartest organization in football was the one stupid enough to get caught.

Detroit's odds on winning the Super Bowl are 65/1 place those bets now.

I'm having a more difficult time each year finding a Lions fan who I can bet with around here. Nobody will bite on a over/under on wins this season. I do not see them winning more than 5 games, and could be convinced to lower it to four.

The team resigned RT George Foster this past weekend. This is the same guy who lost his starting job last year and was on the inactive list late in the season because he was so bad. Now he's being projected as the starting right tackle. It's difficult to believe, but the offensive line will actually be worse in 2008 than it was last season.

If the odds were 10,000:1 on the Lions winning the Super Bowl, I would take that bet.

Yeah, the odds of them even making the playoffs should be around the 65-1 that Casey listed.

Wonderful. So, within a few days, Millen re-signed both players he got from Denver for Dre Bly -- both of whom were on the inactive list much of the 2nd half of last season because of poor performance.

I'm surprised they didn't sign Dunn or Michael Pittman, since this off season almost all the signees have been former Tampa players. Rumor was that Leroy Selmon was even in town for a tryout.

The Lions may not have much of a choice. I can't imagine there's a huge rush of players pounding their door down, wanting to play for them.

I'm sure that's the case, and the team has to overpay to either get free agents to come here or keep their few decent players around (Corey Redding, for example). Many players can't wait to go elsewhere and get out of this pathetically-run organization. Heck, the organization drove Barry Sanders into early retirement, due to his frustration with their ineptness, when he was on the brink of becoming the NFL's all-time career rusher.

Still, re-signing two players who each performed so poorly last season that they were placed on the inactive list is an embarrassment.

This has been a great season so far for Lions fans. Any hope that was left over from last year's fast start is now gone...

Sobering article:

Marinelli must Buc this trend

Wow, all I can say is wow to this. The Detroit Lions have released Kevin Jones. Yes he has been hurt, but this is the most moronic move that they have made this off season. That is now one more major whole to fill. I really really think I am done with the Lions at least until Millen is gone, not that that will make a huge difference.

I heard this as well, and I'm surprised for a few reasons. The biggest surprise is that I did not think a team could release a player under contract who is injured. Jones is still recovering from knee surgery. Second, they are not saving much salary cap space with this move, since Jones is in the final year of his contract and only counts $2.5 million against the cap. Whoever they sign to replace him will probably count for only a little less.

So, another Millen first round draft pick is gone. Nice job, Matt!

You can't put a player on IR during the season then cut him. The Lions are now bringing in former Bucaneer Michael Pittman....what a &&*%##& joke.

Lions formally announce releases of Jones and Kalimba Edwards

Also, Trent Dilfer is out in San Francisco.

Re: NFL 2008 Offseason Thread

Releasing Kalimba Edwards makes another wasted Millen draft pick (2nd round), as well as a wasted resigning. Edwards was terrible, yet he was resigned last off season and given a nice signing bonus. Then, a year later, he's cut.

I'm not surprised... he IS from Tampa, after all, and that's now a requirement for any Millen / Marinelli signings.

I didn't think this team could become any more of a joke, but I was wrong. This off season has been incredibly bad, even by Lions standards.

To top it off, Millen will probably now draft RB Jonathan Stewart in the first round. He's a perfect Millen pick, since he needs toe surgery and will be out for 4-6 months. Meanwhile, another year will go by without building the offensive line.

Now, if Millen was smart, he would try to trade down in the first round, and take a lineman and RB Felix Jones. Since he's not, though, he'll end up with another player with a history of injuries.
