Component video leads to all-blue picture

When I connect my DVD player using component video cables, the picture is in shades of blue, almost like no other colors are in the mix.

I've tried 2 TVs and several DVDs and see the same effect with all. Tony Soprano looks like a smurf.

The composite video produces a normal picture, so I'm using that, but I'm curious what would cause this.

I've checked that the cables were in the right holes multiple times, even tried mixing them up (like green into blue) and could not get normal colors with component output.

Any ideas?

First I would try a different cable.
If that doesn't work try a different DVD player or other component source.

If you try a different source and everything works, you know it is the player.
If you get the same thing from a different source, it is likely the TV input, try another input and see if that corrects it.

What is the DVD player set too in regards to progressive or interlaced. If your t.v. is doing the deinterlacing and scanning the picture progressive 480p or 1080i, you can't have both do the same job. If it's a t.v. that does that , the only thing you can do is set the DVD player to interlaced and let the t.v. do the work.

That may be it- I hadn't noticed there was a progressive option in the setup menu... would have assumed the component output was progressive automatically... what would be the point of it being interlaced?

Not sure why that would mess up the color, though.

I would check for setup menus on both the TV and DVD player.

When in doubt, read the directions.

No flame intended but make sure that both ends of your component cable are connected red to red, green to green and blue to blue.

I agree because I had the same problem where the manufacturer made the blue and the green pretty similar and I accidentally plugged the blue into the green. When I realized this, I slapped my forehead, and switched the wires and it worked fine.

Also, although less common (but I've been bitten by this before,) is make sure that both units agree on what "component" is.

Sometimes outputs or inputs can be changed to RGB. RGB into YUV or YPrPb doesn't work very well. (Not sure what YPrPb into RGB does, though.)

Leo I was just about to say that. The big Diff. is where the sync is. On Older set the input was RGBHV the H being Horizontal and the V being Vertical. If the TV set is set to RGB its still looking for that signal. With Y PrPb the sync. is on the green.



Just make sure that you go into the main menu of the TV set itself to make sure that the component input is set to the proper setting.

ehh, a lot of systems default to RGsB (sync-on-green) in addition to the possibilities of RGBHV and RGBS (component and composite sync, respectively.)

Sometimes the tricky errors are best for learning how your system REALLY works. It's possible that the component output is failing and not putting out a signal on all channels.

BLUE PICTURE
I've got a similar problem w/ my theater system.  When I change the input on my reciever to the Dish TV, the picture is very blue - there is a picture present but all the shades are blue.  Everything had been working fine and it just started acting like this.  When I play a video game or DVD thru the projector (Sharp DT-500), the picture is fine so I know the problem is not the projector.  I have replaced my Dish DVR/Box and the HDMI cable that connects the Dish Box to my receiver (Yamaha RX-V863).  I have tried plugging my Dish HDMI cable into a different HDMI input on the receiver thinking maybe I have a bad plug and the picture is still blue.

The only thing I can think of trying now is to give up on the HDMI input and try component or another connection between the Dish Box and the receiver.

Any thoughts or suggestions are much appreciated.
