I've been a fan of the nostalgia programs that have aired on channels like VH1, even though I don't always like what the commentators have to say. I feel that whenever they get people who were involved with the entertainments to participate, it's pretty cool.

In a way, I think that the AFI's 100 Years... specials are sort of like the "I Love..." programs of film history. When I say that, I mean that they gather up a group of entertainers, some of whom crack wise, others who talk seriously, to talk about great movies.

I think probably the most interesting example of this overlap was the "100 Years...100 Movie Quotes" special in 2005. They had several VH1 "I Love..." alumni as commentators. Cheryl Hines was a commentator on the first "I Love The 80s" in 2002 (It's 6 years old this year, kiddies), while Penn & Teller appeared on the first "I Love The 70s" in 2003 (I can't believe that this is the 5-year anniversary of that miniseries). Hines, Penn & Teller (that sounds like a law firm) all appeared on the "100 Movie Quotes" special in 2005. I find that interesting.

I wonder which people they'll have as commentators on this year's special. I really enjoy it when they show all the commentators at the beginning of the special on a CGI image of a reel of film while the instrumental version of the 100 Years theme song "A Ticket To Dream" plays in the background.
