Just came across this:
A set consisting of previously released titles:
Destry Rides Again (1939)
Winchester '73 (1950)
Bend Of The River (1952)
The Far Country (1955)
Night Passage (1957)
The Rare Breed (1966)

More info here

Sounds pointless.

Maybe, apart from this comment in the link above: "They have all been previously released on DVD and it looks like Universal will just repackage the same content with the possible exception of The Far Country. While its original aspect ration is 1.85:1, its May 2003 DVD release was in the full screen format. However, the specs for this set show The Far Country as being released in 1.85:1. We'll find out, but I'm doubtful."

Doubtful, but possible.

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

With MGM and Fox jumping on the Western bandwagon in May, is this all Universal has to contribute ? I already picked up most of the titles when they were originally released. The only attractive thing about this latest offering is the price (in case you are interested in enough titles to make buying the box cheaper than buying the individual titles). I am a little surprised that 'Shenandoah' isn't included.

Yeah, they should scrap these and just release Lonely Are the Brave instead.

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

Geez - I just picked these up cheap in Big W two weeks ago.

Thanks Universal.....not.

So was I, but maybe it's because they included it in last year's James Stewart Screen Legend Collection digipack?

Universal has SO many - dozens! - of fabulous westerns yet unreleased, I hope we will see something of them in the near future! Maybe new volumes of their Classic Western Round-Up Collections from last year? I would especially love to see:

The Spoilers (56)
The Rawhide Years (56)
The Vigilantes Return (47)
Destry (54)
Wyoming Mail (50)
Frontier Gal (45)
Black Bart (48)
Horizons West (52)....

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

Well I don't have any of these yet, so I'm in for the box set. I was happy to hear about it. That said, yes, some unreleased stuff would be great...

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

DVD Times has the specs and art here: they say The Far Country will be widescreen.

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

I have the 2003 versions. Meaning in practice that I don't own a widescreen The Far Country (just the FS version) or The Rare Breed (not at all).

At roughly $30 retail, this is tempting nevertheless...

Has anyone been able to definitely confirm the a.r. of The Far Country on this upcoming release?

Marco,
Did you not read John's post and the link he provided?

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

Of course I did, but how many times have studios erred on a press release in the past? There's something fishy about this, given that all the other films are simply repackagings. Does anyone know that a new widescreen transfer was ever completed? Until I get real confirmation from somebody in the know, I will continue to remain skeptical. I'm betting we'll see the same disc included as we all currently own... but I hope I'm wrong! I'm anxious to verify.

Re: James Stewart westerns from Universal in May

And if this is indeed a new transfer we get from Universal, than I pray that this isn't a digipak style box so that I can sell off or trade doubles.

Then you just have to wait until the reviews come in on this boxset.

While I have no knowledge of the upcoming release other than what I read here, I assure you that a widescreen transfer of THE FAR COUNTRY has been completed because Turner Classic Movies aired it at least twice. I noted it in a thread on this board last Fall. I recorded it and I'm watching the DVD-R right now. It is in fact widescreen as well as an entirely new transfer from an excellent source. Everyone will want to own this upgrade.

I just realized today is the release date for this set. So is THE FAR COUNTRY indeed in 1.85:1 as promised in the press release ?

Yes, see here: The Far Country Jimmy Stewart

DVDBeaver has reviewed the complete set. The transfers for Winchester '73 and Destry Rides Again are also improved. The other three DVDs are identical with the 2003 releases.
