Hmm. I believe this could be just some "re-package" of the old set? I mean, can they actually release this new restoration (with new extras) this quickly (June is not that far away)?

Don´t get me wrong, I hope that we get the new box set sooner than later (in Blu-ray also, of course), but I also hope that they don´t "rush" this to markets (e.g releasing new restoration with old extras or no extras at all).

Re: Godfather 4k

The key to your question is "this quickly". Having read this thread, this is definitely not a slapdash job of restoration and would have been properly documented. Just because we're only finding out about it now doesn't mean the DVD version hasn't been in the works for some time. I think it may take a little longer for the BD version, replication limitations being what they are right now, but I don't think there's any issue with how quickly an SD version can come out.

Re: Godfather 4k

This restoration really deserves some theatrical playdates. I want to see it again, and the restored print of THE GODFATHER PART II as well.

More info/rumors

The Digital Bits Rumor Mill - Current Posts

From the article:

"The BBFC notice means that Paramount is likely planning to being The Godfather Trilogy Restored to DVD (and possibly even Blu-ray Disc) later this year."

The "and possibly even Blu-ray disc" doesn't sound very encouraging, especially considering Paramount's past track record. If this were Warner there would be no doubt of a consecutive BD release and I'd be jumping for joy right now, as it stands I'm not very hopeful.

I don't double dip on standard def anymore so I'll stick with my current set if this is a DVD only release.

Re: Godfather 4k

Paramount would be positively NUTS not to release a Blu-Ray edition of a movie IMDb voters collectively voted the best film ever made.

A DVD reissue with no Blu-Ray is an offer I CAN refuse.

Re: Godfather 4k

Although the UK release has apparently already been everything but announced, it would be prudent of Paramount to hold off on a release until they get their Blu-Ray act together.

Re: Godfather 4k

Now that HD DVD is dead, can we now hope to get different colored Blu-ray cases? For some reason, I just don't like the idea of an HD Godfather box set clad in cerulean blue. It really needs a darker, more thematic color.

Re: Godfather 4k

Sounds great. But like some others here, I will wait for the BD release and will not double-dip on DVD. Hope Paramount doesn't drag their feet forever w/ that...

I'd have to believe it will be some type of cardboard case - Close Encounters for example. There are others too.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't think Paramount is going to release Godfather so soon on BD.

Re: Godfather 4k

What are they waiting for, the 40th anniversary?

Re: Godfather 4k

That's only 4 years off; don't give them any ideas.

Re: Godfather 4k

My guess is they will wait for a bigger install base. As we know, older movies so far haven't sold well on HDM.

Re: Godfather 4k

I would have thought that you would release older classics to entice folk to get into a new product, eg Blu Ray

Re: Godfather 4k

if i was marketing manager at Paramount , i'd definitely NOT release The restored Godfather on blu ray

Its such a phenomenally popular title most fans wont be able to resist buying it again on DVD on the promise of a glorious new transfer

then we'll slug em again in 2009 when they have to re-buy on Blu ray

Muhahahahahahahah!!!!!

oops, I seem to have stumbled onto Sony's Lawrence Of Arabia strategy

Re: Godfather 4k

The BFI Southbank London UK has all three Godfather Movies during May.I hope these are the new restorations. The time frame is about right, but there are no further details at this stage.

But the format's total sales are on an upswing thanks to the death of HD DVD.

Paramount has announced nothing for the Trilogy in this region and made no statements regarding BD. They can't just rush back into it and have titles ready tomorrow seeing how they abandoned it.

My guess is that we'll get it fairly soon, possibly initially as a box set for Christmas release, followed by more affordable individual discs shorn of extras. The Godfather is one of those safe bankers that will consistently bring in sales. Accordingly, it's always likely to sell and isn't as dependent on one big glut of sales and then it's remainder rack time. I.e. it's not like the latest blockbuster that needs to be marketed rapidly before the next eye candy novelty comes along.

Oh boy - Godfather III in high def. I can't wait to see Sophia Coppolla's magnetic performance with every nuance of her acting skills revealed.

Re: Godfather 4k

I could see Christmas as a more likely release instead of this summer as there will be a HUGE push for Blu-ray for the upcoming holidays. While I agree that this is a title which would sell over time, Paramount did wait at least four years before bringing it to DVD. I hope it comes sooner than later.

Re: Godfather 4k

UK "The Godfather: The Coppola Restoration" box set (SD DVD) is indeed coming...

The Godfather Trilogy (UK - DVD R2) in News > Releases at DVDActive

..but I´ll wait for the BD-release. It HAS to come, right?

"Finally" and "definitively" could safely have been added here.

Re: Godfather 4k

A lot of people slag on Sofia, but she's actually not a bad actress, and a more than competent director. Her performaces in Star Wars Episode I and the Chemical Brothers video where she plays the gymnast were fine work.

And then, I realised: the reason why those performances were good was that they were silent.

Re: Godfather 4k

I'll forgive her acting because she is a hell of a director!

Same. The Virgin Suicides is one of my favourite movies of all time, and I enjoyed Marie Antoinette. I have to make time to see Lost in Translation.

Better than the other two by a clear mile. It was probably only the uncritical lauding of Lord of the Rings at the Oscars that year that prevented it getting Best Picture.

Clearly, we just need George Lucas to help out and do his "magick" w/ the restoration, and walla! Godfather 3: The way it was intended (w/ Jar Jar Binks as Mary Corleone).

Great article! Thanks.

"New DVDs of the trilogy will be released in September."

Hmm.. "DVDs"... I´m sure that the Blu-ray-releases are coming also.

Re: Godfather 4k

The comparison photos are really great on this. Prime examples of "subtle change".
