And the films of David Lynch? I guess just catalogue them under their own genre of "WTF?" If you have a system that works for you, that's gravy...there are just way too many mixed genre films for that to ever work well for me...A-Z and nothing else to complicate matters at my house*.

* Save for certain bothersome movies like FIRST BLOOD (which goes under "R" for Rambo), JEWEL OF THE NILE (which goes under "R" next to ROMANCING THE STONE) or SILENCE OF THE LAMBS/RED DRAGON (which go under "H" for the character name of Hannibal Lecter)...

When confronted with "multiple genres", I go with what I think would be the primary sub-genre--for example, Blazing Saddles is, in my collection, a comedy, as that is its primary purpose. I don't have enough Westerns to constitute a genre (yet--it is a growing section but more so in HDM), so they are currently with "action/drama". It's not perfect, but it works for me. (Alien, in my system, would be sci-fi first, then horror).

Boxed sets are easy--they are kept apart on a different shelf alphabetically.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

I organize by major category: movies, TV, opera. Within movies by director and each director’s movies by the date the movie was released.

Since I waited for the format competition to resolve itself, I have nothing on HD as yet. As I consider the movie the important thing (and not the media) and as I can play DVDs on an HD player, I’ll intermix the formats.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

I keep them all segregated otherwise they'd just bicker too much.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

I filed the Pixar-BD titles with the other Disney sDVDs in my collection. I filed CASINO ROYALE-BD with the Bonds.

Otherwise, I have the BDs and HD-DVDs separate from the rest of my collection on their own shelves.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

Currently, the Blu-rays I have watched are on a separate shelf in alphabetical order. Meanwhile, the ones I haven't watched are piled up on a growing stack with all the other DVDs that I haven't gotten around to watching yet.....all of them are calling out to me to watch them.

Me too. I think of it is much like the following lines from Ghostbusters:

Quote:
Dr. Egon Spengler: There's something very important I forgot to tell you.
Dr. Peter Venkman: What?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Don't cross the streams.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Why?
Dr. Egon Spengler: It would be bad.
Dr. Peter Venkman: I'm fuzzy on the whole good/bad thing. What do you mean, "bad"?
Dr. Egon Spengler: Try to imagine all life as you know it stopping instantaneously and every molecule in your body exploding at the speed of light.
Dr Ray Stantz: Total protonic reversal.
Dr. Peter Venkman: Right. That's bad. Okay. All right. Important safety tip. Thanks, Egon.

Don't cross the formats.

LOL. Fortunately, my wife has started to think that she's spoiled by BD now (after just 2 months). She looks more forward to watching a BD than a DVD now. And since she knows I generally try to be moderately prudent about my purchases anyway, it's not a real problem at all.

Anyway, when I'm looking for a movie to watch, I don't want "Do I want HD or SD?" to be a deciding factor.

Agreed. Besides, it's not like DVD is suddenly soooo unwatchable in comparison (in most cases anyway). Also, in cases where I want to keep the old DVD alongside the new BD (for the extras, as a popular loaner, for road-trips, etc), it's more convenient to have both next to each other on the shelf.

Like some/many(?), I do like keeping my collection segregated by relatively broad thematic categories (as I or the wife is often in certain moods to watch certain types of movies), but haven't been on top of things in recent years since my collection just keeps getting messed up all the time (by the kids, etc).

Also, I do keep newly bought titles that I've never seen before in their own separate (and growing ) stash.

I really need to get back on top of things...

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

I mix all my discs together (DVDs, Blu-rays, HD DVDs) alphabetically.

To those who put their collections together by genre, I have a question: how do you decide what genre to put a movie or show in? Obviously a lot of movies are hard to categorize or could easily be placed into multiple genres.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

Like i said, I combine genres, so it makes it a little easier, ie... Drama/Action/Classics...Sci-fi/Fantasy/Horror. TV shows I keep on a different set of shelves in an adjoining room.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

We manage. A decision has to be made.

But it also depends on the type of genres you distinguish.
In my VHS time, I used to have "Crime", "War", "History", "Drama", "Psychological", "Comedy" and more like that. Sometimes difficult indeed.

Now I have "Film", Documentation", "Animated", "TV-series", etc. Some are divided further because of themes that are important to me, like "Western", "Geography", "TV-sleuth", "Family".

A specific "theme" is "Double". This allows me to give away discs at a whim.

If it wasn't for the PC era, I too would have everything alphabetically in my cabinet. But that's already how they are stored in my PC, so I can print out any other ordering I like as well, and at least find every disc I own.

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

I just keep everything alphabetized for easy retrieval. My wife, bless her little heart, keeps a list of our titles on several sheets of paper and there separated by genre.

I answered that above. I select what, to me, appears to be the dominant genre in films that could have more than one and place it in that genre.

I thought my 380 might be a little much.

Segregated at first, and blending over time. Less than 9% of the collection.

Yeah my HD DVD's and Blu-Ray movies are taking up my top shelf while my sd dvd's are on the next row below or in storage cases.

Hahaha. Seems that lots of folks on HTF have much bigger collections than that. I've lost count myself, but I'm probably in the 600's, if not more.

When I first began collecting DVDs, I thought it'd be good to set a limit for myself like no more than 1 DVD for each day of the year, including subtracting whatever I end up not wanting anymore and selling away, but that only lasted for a few years.

I think I should try to stick to that rule this time w/ HDM (well, BD only so far ) especially if pricing doesn't come down as far as DVD has...

Re: So...are you mixing-in your HD discs with your SD-DVDs?

At first I was going to mix my HDM with my DVD's but I ended up arranging my HD-DVD's in alphbetical order seperately from the Blu-ray's. That lasted for about 2 months then I mixed both HD-DVD and Blu-ray titles together. While still keeping them seperate from the SD-DVD's.

My SD-DVD collection seems really small compaired to some of you here.

SD-DVD's 280
Blu-ray 86
HD-DVD 66

HDM actually makes me want to build a huge movie library including the older classics. I do not think I really considered doing this with VHS, Laserdisc or DVD.

I just really love HD!

I'm at 1850 or so. I had to create a list to keep them straight because when I hit about 900, I'd occasionally buy an older catalog title and bring it home and realize that I already had it.

And to answer the question in the topic, I keep my Blu Ray discs separate from my SD discs.

LOL. Who hasn't done that here? I think I've done it a few times myself even though my collection is not nearly as big. It generally happens to me w/ titles I've bought but never got around to viewing w/in a year or so (and then accidentally rebuy it in some big sale or something at bargain bin prices).

I've done that with books (I'm an historian--I must have close to five thousand books on my shelves) but not with CDs or DVDs--yet.

As a matter of fact, I have two Ebay auctions going on right now for the same thing. I hope I lose one of them! Doh!
