DIY sub w/ changes

I have been looking at Ron Stimpson's Sonotube sub design and was wondering how it would perform if I changed the sub to a Shiva-x. Will the design work with the same tube design, or do I need to go with a bigger tube?

Absolutely. Ron's design is 5.5cf gross so that is about 5cf net tuned to 19 hz. That is extremely close to the 140L ported design in the Shiva application notes. If you stick with the 19hz tune, then the 500w plate amp from PE would work since it has an 18hz high pass filter. If you tune to 17hz like in the manual, then the 500w amp from O Audio would be a better choice since it has adjustable high pass filters and one of them is set for 16hz. You can adjust the PE amp but that does require soldering skills. The 1 band of PEQ on the PE amp is a very nice feature.

That is what I was wanting to hear. I had not really considered going with a plate, but will look into it. I was leaning at either an Outlaw or Marantz M-block. This is my first DIY and I think it will be a good one to cut my teeth on. Thanks for the input.

If you go with an extermal amp, then you will need an external subsonic filter. You don't want to run a ported sub without one.

Good to know. I will look into the PE and the O a little more heavily. Right now, ease of build is good for my first project. I will expand my knowledge and be "different" after I have more experience.

If you are stuck on a regular amp instead of a plate amp, then the EQ.2 will be an excellent value when it comes out. Two bands of PEQ and an SSF. The Reckhorn B1 is a little cheaper but the only useful portion is the SSF. The bass boost can be used to a small extent on some sealed subs. You never want to boost a ported sub.

I am not really dead set on an external amp, but it goes well with the Sonotube design. I was just trying to go for a little easier build for my first try.

My only issue now is to figure out hot to build the PE or O amp into my tube.

Back to the drawing board.

DIY sub w/ changes: What would/did you do?

OK for those of you that built Ron Stimpson's Sonotube (at DIY # 8 Titan Powered Subwoofer) how did you/would you change it? We need to keep the general height/size but internal mods would be easy to incorporate. Like Scott in Houston we will use a Shiva-X driver and an external sub amp (maybe a plate amp in a box). More or different dampening material, different porting etc? Thanx for any suggestions.

I wouldn't change the dampening material. If you want to change the tuning frequency by adjusting the length of the ports, then that is up to you. I would model it in Unibox or WinISD before making any changes. If you aren't sure how to do that or what the outcome will be then follow the instructions to the letter and you will be successful.

Already a question: We cannot find the 1" polyester batting Ron used. How about 1" egg crate foam?

It is available at Wal-Mart or any fabric store like Hancock's or Joann's.

None at Wal-mart but the local Jo-anns had rolls of 1 and 2" thick polyester batting and they had a 50% off coupon too! Well that's been taken care of. Thanx
