Tipping at a Fancy Restaurant?

Stacy and I will be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary tonight. We're staying at the Capitol Hotel in Little Rock and will be dining there. It's been a while since I've been to an upper echelon restaurant. There will be a waiter, of course, and I possibly a sommelier. We do plan to have a very nice wine with our dinner.

What are the tipping guidelines for a place line this? Can I still go by the 20% rule or....?

Re: Tipping at a Fancy Restaurant?

At least 20%, more if you get special service (dessert made at the table, etc.) or the service is outstanding. Maitre d' - Only if he performs a service besides seating you (getting a special table, checking your coat) . Sommelier - 20% of wine or $5, whichever is more.

Here's a great thread from 2005 about this topic:

Re: Tipping at a Fancy Restaurant?

Some places will automatically add a tip to your bill. Be sure to check before you tip at the end, nothing like giving them 20% on top of the 15% they've already added (for your convienience no doubt )

As always, Jeff’s advice in such matters is exemplary.
