I'm going to build a HT when I sell my house (I just moved and haven't sold my old house yet). I have some components, but need a new amplifier - mine bit the dust a few months ago, and I decided to wait until I get my new big screen TV.
Here's what my set up would look like:
Inputs to amplifier:
TV Cable
DVR (Tivo)
DVD player
Cassette Deck
Wireless Media Receiver (to grab video, jpgs, and music files from my computer)
VCR
Output to Big screen HD TV (which I don't yet have).
My specific questions:
Are there amplifiers with TV tuners built in, or do I need that? I'd like to take the basic cable I have and get surround sound from the cable to send to my TV. If the amp won't do this, is there any way to capture surround sound from basic cable? If not, then do I have to split the cable and run it to the Tivo and also TV? If I did that, I'd at least get stereo for live TV, right?
Will Basic Cable capture HD TV? I know the standard changes next January, but I've read that if I have basic cable, I don't need to buy new TVs. I'm going to buy a new TV anyway, but am not sure if I have to get digital cable from my Charter provider.
I guess the bottom line is that I'm pretty sure I know how component audio works, but am not exactly sure how video works with an amp.
Any other suggestions would be helpful, too.
Thanks,
carl
