There was a recent post about Jack Benny and Fox's release of "Charlie's Aunt." On the same date, Fox released "On The Riveria." I am a Danny Kaye fan and there was a past post about availability of his Sam Goldwyn films, but I couldn't find any comments about him as an actor or the Fox release. I would like to see other comments is about "On The Riveria." While I'm at it, any one have comments about the eventual availability of "Merry Andrews."

Re: Danny Kaye and "On The Riveria"
ON THE RIVIERA is an outstanding release from Fox. The transfer is impeccable and the film itself is one of Kaye's most underrated films. There are three featurettes: THE RIVIERA STORY about the two previous incarnations of the story; THE JACK OF CLUBS about choreographer Jack Cole; and an excellent PORTRAIT OF DANNY KAYE. Sadly it's the only Kaye film in the Fox library although TCF may have some sway if MGM ever gives the green light to Goldwyn's library Kaye films. I like MERRY ANDREW which has never been on homevideo, and I would love to see a non-pd version of THE INSPECTOR GENERAL, but I can't imagine what "marketing" venue that they would release them in unless they tossed in THE MADWOMAN OF CHAILLOT. Paramount owns two great DK film--ON THE DOUBLE and KNOCK ON WOOD--but they will not release classics....it's almost corporate policy. Columbia/Sony owns THE MAN FROM THE DINER'S CLUB and my favorite Kaye film, ME AND THE COLONEL, but I doubt if they come to dvd anytime soon, if ever.I strongly recommend ON THE RIVIERA, although like CHARLEY'S AUNT, it was a bit undermarketed by Fox.

Same thing here - superb DVD and makes me wish more Kaye films were available. Things are looking up for DVD releases of MGM-owned films, so I am really hoping his 5 first Goldwyn films will show up in the future.

Oh, how I wish this wasn't true...it just makes me grind my teeth to think of the rich legacy of filmmaking in Paramount's history, and how precious little of it is ever made available to people who actually appreciate and enjoy anything made prior to the Nixon administration.
