My new WD 750GB drive (used for Time Machine in OWC external FW800) just died after 2 weeks of use.

The one external drive I absolutely will not use due to the number of failures is LaCie.

I've heard this before and I respect peoples' experiences, but I have used 8+ LaCie drives over many years without any problems (the very first LaCie I used did crap out, but it was under warranty and they replaced it without a problem. Not the only brand I've had die either). I also know several other companies and individuals that use them with out problems. So that's my experience and it's not intended to change your's-- just to provide another viewpoint.

Got to decide between:

1. WD replacement

2. Samsung for $10 cheaper

3. Seagate at $20 more.

4. Hitachi at $27 more.

Appreciate any help with this frustrating process.
I've concluded that my OWC external is the culprit. The latest drama is that it keeps losing the mounted drive.
Will only use it once a week as secondary backup.

Wow Chris, this is one of the few bad reports I've heard of OWC enclosures. I've loved my OWC Firewire 400/800 enclosure and have had nothing but great experiences with it. I'd contact OWC and see about getting a replacement. I've heard their customer service is solid.

With regards to the brands you listed, go to any hard drive review site and you'll find a group of people who've had bad experiences with all of them. Personally, I've had good experiences with Hitachi and Seagate, no experience with Samsung, and 2 bad experiences with WD. About 5 years ago two WD internal ATA drives died on me. My newest WD external (Firewire 400) has performed well *except* that the Firewire chipset in that model does not support external booting from my Mac, which is why I bought the OWC...which works like a champ.

Not sure, Chris. Personally I don't use Time Machine. I clone my drives semi-regularly (about once every month or two) and there isn't anything that if I lost it in between those clones that I'd truly regret losing. If I put something important on my machine (say vacation pictures from France or an important work document) I usually have it on another media (like a USB stick, or something else). If I know it's only going to be on my Mac, I do another clone, or an incremental clone.

That way, I can restore from the clone to do the occasional defrag, which I routinely do, rather than have a separate Time Machine external HD and clone HD.
