Constant Subwoofer White Noise

Thread Starter
I hope you can help me. My old subwoofer started making a sound the other day, which I can only say, sounds like white noise. It’s constant and it doesn’t matter if it’s hooked up to the receiver or not, nor does the volume control have any effect. The receiver is a Yamaha RX-V757 and Velodyne makes the old SW. I went out and got another SW (a Paradigm Ultracube 12) hooked it up and the same thing. So, I unhooked the Paradigm from the receiver, plugged it back in and the same noise. I tried different outlets and went so far as to turn off the circuit breakers on all but the one outlet it was plugged into and still the same noise. All the other speakers sound fine. The receiver was checked out and came back fine. I checked the outlet and it's properly grounded. I’m trying to avoid a service call (the store is an hour away and they start charging when they leave) so any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance

Re: Constant Subwoofer White Noise

Sounds like you have a ground loop issue or noise in your line since both subs do this. What else do you have on the same circuit you are plugging the subs into? Amps, including active subs, should not be plugged into a circuit that has other large devices on it, such as fans, fridge, washer/dryer, etc... and also fluorescent lights or lights with dimmer switches can cause noise. Try plugging them into other outlets to see if the problem goes away; that would be my first shot. If you have ground loop, disconnecting the sub from the receiver should make that go away, so since you said it doesn't matter if it is connected, it probably isn't ground loop.

Re: Constant Subwoofer White Noise

Hopefully, you have been able to solve your problem with your subwoofer, I too, have had this very annoying white noise or whooshing sound coming from my subwoofer when I plug it into an electric outlet. This occurs without my attaching my receiver to the subwoofer, As soon as the plug is removed the noise stops. It is like the subwoofer is reacting to some internal or external stimulant that has created this sound within the speaker. I have plugged the speaker into a couple of outlets but to no avail. Since it is a Sunfire Subwoofer I have called the company who was not able to help me by phone. If I were to send the unit to the factory for repair the charge for a unit eight years old would be $480.00 plus I would pay the shipping to the West Coast. I have seen references to ground-loop problems but I don't understand what must be done. If you have cured your problem and/or there is anyone out there that knows whether there is any hope short of throwing out the unit please let me know.
