What is the building code for sizes and spacing of floor/ceiling joists? I have a basement ceiling (which of course is also a floor for the room above) with a joist at the end of the room that I want to make smaller in order to accomodate my screen. The joist is spanning a 12 foot wide room (and is longer of course because it goes out farther into the structure of the house at the sides of the room for support). It is a 2" x 8" and it is 12" away from the wall.
I would like to know if I can replace this 12 foot long 2" x 8" with two or three 2" x 6" or perhaps a metal beam.
Any idea's what is allowable in the building code?
