I have not yet been so brave.

At first i was scared to mix DVDs and Blu-ray's. But i was running out of room on the Blu side, and had plenty extra on the DVD side!

I think i am up to 120 Blu-rays, and about 800 DVDs. Its just enough Blu-ray discs that you notice i have them!

It bothered me to have Terminator, Predator, and Dirty Harry on Blu, but the sequels would be on the DVD side of the shelf. Now they are together, in production order, as god intended!
Someday, they will all be Blu!

Brian, i hate snappers. I wouldnt buy a movie cause it was in a snapper. Snappers would snag onto a keepcase, and pull it off the shelf. Snappers are a curse to DVD cases everywhere.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I got a Blu-ray player in November and became hooked on Blu right away, but it actually now feels like it was only a fad with me. Since that time I have enjoyed MANY standard DVDs that look quite good upconverted, and which I don't even feel a need to ever upgrade, even if the blu-ray versions did arrive.

Most of what I love are older more niche titles, which will take forever to arrive on Blu-ray, if ever. Something like the black and white Fox Charlie Chan movies look great already on my system - why upgrade, even if the day comes where I have the opportunity to do so?

I am now pretty much only upgrading "favorites" (like the James Bond films), and of course if anything new is released on both Blu and DVD, I'd naturally go for the Blu. For example, I may want to buy the new film DOUBT when it's released, so of course I'd go for the Blu-ray version.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

Actually I have a lot more than I realised which are either double/triple dips or own on HD or BD. 157 SDVD's in all so going to try and sell them as I started collecting 1997 at format launch so some are definately worth something.

I do this as I go with upgrades--never had anyone say "no" yet.

I've got something like that planned for next weekend for the same reason--last year it was LOTR, this year it's the Godfather Trilogy on Blu-ray.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I still have 1100 dvds.
I wish i could sell more then i've been able to
but I've been lucky to get $4 or $5 for them when i do sell them.
So I just keep them.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

^ Yeah, I get in the $3 or $4 range on eBay for old DVDs too but I figure it's better to have the $3 than keep a disc that I'll probably never watch again.

Well, I've finally sold off or given away (to friends and family) all my DVDs, I've got a small few left that aren't on Blu yet, but even those I doubt I'll ever watch.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I am still buying DVDs.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I'm keeping most of my dvd's and will dump those when and if a HD version is released that has all or more of the supplemental material that the dvd has; has the original version as well as any director's incarnation; and hopefully the original sound track along with any lossless version. Otherwise, I'll keep the dvd.

I have dumped some titles on dvd that don't appeal to me any more but most I've kept as they will likely never appear in any HD format. I still buy dvd's for the same reason - likely will never be a HD release.

Hey Brad,

by "original" do you mean original mix? Like an original mono mix versus a new 5.1 mix? I say that because "lossless" isn't a deviation from the original... far from it. Of course, if a studio chooses to only present a "new mix" losslessly and leave the original mix lossy, that a studio decision (one I disagree with).

However, since even lossy tracks on BD are more transparent than DVD, why would that be a reason to hold onto a DVD copy when you upgrade?

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

Hi David,

I simply would like the original soundtrack mix included for the historical aspect. For example, if a movie originally had a mono track or two channel stereo and the new release on HD offers a re-mixed 5.1 soundtrack, please include the original as well as the new mix. Just for the purity of it.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

Agreed 100%. All Blu-rays SHOULD deliver the original sound mix in addition to any new mix. IMO, original sound mixes should always be presented losslessly even if they are just "old mono soundtracks" as those of us with laserdisc are all too aware of how lossy compression can suck the life out of old mono mixes just as easily as new 5.1 mixes.

Disney is usually pretty good about supplying the original soundtrack mix along side any new mix (their Little Mermaid DVD was a sad example to the contrary), though on BD they frustratingly didn't provide lossless quality with the original mix for Sleeping Beauty.

I'm slowly dumping all my dvd's the only ones I won't sell are the bootlegs.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I'm still buying DVDs as well. My Blu-ray collection is very much in the minority so far (teens of titles). I'm buying new titles which will benefit from being presented in HD (such as Quantum of Solace which is currently the only preorder DVD or Blu-ray on my radar at the moment). With the exception of a handful of titles, I'm not double-dipping.

The situation may change, I may buy more titles in future, but I doubt if I will start replacing titles to any great extent. I certainly won't get rid of any DVDs. I've had my collecting frenzy with DVD. I expect my Blu-ray experience to be more like my VHS experience - a modest number of titles, mostly new ones or special catalogue titles.

That's kind of the way I feel. I've built up my dvd collection full of pretty much all the titles I want, and to be honest I'm a bit burnt out. The prospect of repurchasing all those titles doesn't appeal to me. I look forward to the occasional new release and some old favorites (I bought Amadeus and plan on buying Lord of the Rings, Star Wars), but otherwise I don't think I'm going to go all out on catalog titles (especially considering there's still a couple SD titles I'll be getting here and there). I'll still want to check out some older movies in HD - but that's where Netflix will come in.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

Gladiator is one of my SD-DVDs I've kept. I watched it last night and sad to say, it was just too difficult, the PQ was quite poor as was the audio. So, the handful of DVDs I do have will be given away and I'll be down to zero. If I need to watch one so bad I can't wait for the Blu, I'll rent it.

I don't do extra's, at all, so I see no reason to keep a DVD around for that reason only.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

Just curious, Ron: were you listening to th DTS-ES track on the original Signature Series release or the Dolby Digital on the Extended Edition re-release?

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

DTS-ES track on the SS. It was decent but really lacked the envelopment and crispness that, I'm guessing, a lossless track would have on this film.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I am only "clearing out" SD DVDs if I have a superior replacement on HD DVD or Blu-ray. I would never get rid of a title just because it is older technology. I still keep laserdiscs that have not been released or that have extra special features not on DVD.

I have a lot of catalog titles on DVD, and am not holding my breath for Blu-ray releases. Also, I have some TV shows that I do not need to replace on Blu-ray.

I will continue to buy SD DVDs of movie that are unlikely to get a Blu-ray release.

Re: Anyone else clearing out their SD-DVDs?

I'm not clearing out much yet, however, I'm having a hard time watching SD DVDs when I know the BD exists.

Last night, I fired up Tim Burton's Batman - another thread got me excited to see it again.

Uggh. I had to stop 10 minutes in. Knowing that the BD exists - all I could think about was "I really wish I could see THAT. This looks terrible." So I stopped. I cannot believe BD has gotten me this snobbish.

I tried watching Gladiator last night, but the disc, which has been kept safely in its case since I first watched it years ago, kept breaking up after the layer change. Not sure if this is another failed disc, or my new Blu player not working properly. I didn't see anything particularly wrong with the PQ while it was working.

Since my collection is extensively horror (I'd say 1000 of my 1200 DVD are genre-specific), I have my doubts about the majority of these titles surfacing on Blu-ray.

Then again, with something like New York Ripper already making its way to Blu in September, maybe I'm wrong.

I tend to give my old SDs away once I upgrade (Rambo and Die Hard collections), but I keep my horror stuff.
I also will get rid of some of my SD titles as they come out and go on sale as a Blu-ray title. I say some, because some of my SD movies actually look pretty good with my blu-ray player doing the upscale, so even if it comes out on Blu-ray why get it right away.
A little patience helps a lot. I picked up Dark City & Crimson Tide for 12 bucks each on Blu-ray. Now I can either sell or give away
my SD versions of those movies.

I think I will do it on a title by title bases. No rush to get rid of them and some I may never get rid off. Also for those in a charitable mood, the public library would love some of your SD-DVD's Particularly documentaries.

So here's my question to those who ARE unloading their discs -

What's the smart way to do it to extract max value for min effort?  Yard sale, video store, craig, e-bay?
I have a fairly large collection with emphasis on one studio (former employer...).  There are a lot of DVD titles that I honestly will never watch again, so I'd like to unload them without making a full-time job out of it (which I suspect the e-bay option would be).

Also, is there some central online listing of rare/OOP discs, so that I don't accidentally sell something of real value for $2?
Well, I recently had a small clearing of my dvd collection (despite my saying it wouldn't be that many titles). They're hardly worth any cash, so I gave them away to my brother and my mom.
Tom-
Great question.  I'm not sure about a cental listing of rare/OOP discs.  For me Its not worth trying to sell a $2 disc (unless I'm having a garage sale).  I have a finite amount of storage space and hit that wall, so I had to remove discs from my collection.  Up until recently I was just giving them away.  I took my last batch into FYE to trade in.  They usually have some sort of promotion that gives you extra store credit.  I got anywhere from $1.25 to $6.00 for each DVD (there were some they wouldn't take).  On the buying end thier retail prices are higher than Amazon, but I was at least able to walk out with a few BDs in exchange for some of my DVDs.
I'm planning on donating some of my double dips to the local library, but so far only have about 10 titles. I've mostly bought stuff I didn't have before in HD, HD DVD or BD.
I used to sell DVDs I no longer need at the local Half Price Books store. However, I have put so many of them in the thinner cases, I doubt they'd take them now.
I recently had my wife and the kids unload some in a stoop sale (ie. "garage sale" at one's front stoop here in the NYC area ).  $3/each or 4 for $10.  We'll probably do another one around back-to-school time when people are all back in the neighborhood again.

RE: the rare/OOP cases, yeah, would be nice to have a good list for that.  Offhand, only one I'm aware of in my collection is the film version of Bizet's Carmen.  The first release of Platoon was hot on eBay way back when, but I never got around to selling it.
