Skeet Ulrich talked to Matt Webb Mitvoich recently before today's announcement that if "Jericho" is renewed and they used the cliffhanger ending, he said there's some stuff in there that's never been done on television. I really want to see this ending, so if another network doesn't pick it up and re-air it with this, I agree, I would love to see the full episode with it on the DVD.

You know, that's 7 more episodes AND a conclusion to the story line. That's way more than most TV shows get. When the hammer falls, usualy that's it. So to be able to tell a story and leave it with an ending is a rare and precious thing.

Would I have liked more? Sure. Am I sad? Nope.

Well, I would've liked more and I AM sad because a show this good deserves to continue its' run on TV. With the endless sea of crap on the airwaves these days it really sucks that one of the only decent shows out there is given an untimely death. I can only hope Sci-Fi sees the built-in fan audience for Jericho and picks it up for their network.

I'm sad and want to see more, but I'm not angry at CBS either. These six episodes were so much better than what came before, that I'm grateful to CBS for making them.

Jericho is a curiosity. It had improved so much, and the writing was excellent. What went wrong? Why didn't this show draw numbers similar to Lost or CSI?

Was it the time slot? The (lack of) promotion? - that's my theory, but I really don't know why.

I'd say it's the fault of being a specialty show - a somewhat dark and depressing show that requires actual thinking and a real attention span. It is a serial story coming off an almost year's layoff then add a horrible time slot somewhat thrust upon it by the American Idol drones.

I'd say a shortsighted TV industry who couldn't really care less about the actual shows and who appear to be entirely driven by their marketing departments. They'd rather have crap and pablum rather than unique shows with thought provoking writing -- American Idol, Survivor, America's Model/Next Boyfriend, scripted reality shows made to appear as reality, yet another Apprentice, LO/CSI/NCIS clones, another useless game show, etc that can be marketed to the lowest common denominators of society. Maybe the Cylons are right.

Please let the cable networks have it and hopefully let the show explore the depths. Off the top of my head, I can't think of any network drama I've liked in years other than the first few seasons of the original CSI and LO:SVU. Every other show I have watched regularly originated on a Cable Network.

This rings so true.

We can hope that the Sci-Fi channel will notice this oversight. I don't see why any cable network would want pass up the number Jericho generates - around 7 mil core viewers, but the production costs are high. CBS was banking on it being a much bigger hit than it turned out to be.

Bill Hunt has a nice rant about the Jericho cancellation up over at The Bits right now, and the points he raises are totally spot-on-the-mark.

Too much reality TV horseshit is taking over the audience base -- you can only slice that pie so many ways -- with these same people being far too fickle and intellectually lazy to give a series like Jericho a chance on a major network like CBS.

Cable would've been a far better fit for this show right from Day One.

The best part was Bill's dead-on (and sobering) observation that a show like The X-Files would have never even made it to a second season in today's tweenybopper-driven audience climate.

Wow, it's every "the networks stink" rant ever. Includes standard "reality TV" rants, complaints about shows which lasted four years getting unfairly yanked, and stopping just short of complaining of both networks shuffling shows' timeslots and leaving them in slots where they don't do well!

And his comment on X-Files is dead wrong - that would make a second season today because it was actually gaining audience during its first season, which practically nothing does.

I disagreed with a lot of Bill's comments on the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray debate, but I'm 100% in agreement with him on this issue. The same thing he said about X-Files holds true for Seinfeld. It was a disaster in the ratings for the first two seasons, but Warren Littlefield believed in the show enough to keep it on the air and we all know how that turned out. It's a shame Jericho doesn't have someone at CBS fighting for it the way he fought for Seinfeld. The sad fact is that, like it or not, all the suits at networks are looking for now is another cheap, brain-dead reality crap-a-thon to put on the air in place of real television shows and that's a damn shame.

CBS is going to have a hard time bringing back such a loyal demographic after having sacrificed them on the altar of reality TV.

They had a hit and didn't even know what to do with it. As I said earlier, it was never really promoted correctly, and the time slot ensured no one would bother checking it out if they hadn't already. CBS was just throwing 'the fans' a bone after the nuts campaign.

Some may be satisfied with that bone, but don't count me among them.

There was an initial drop, which these days might be a little more worrisome, but I think that very low first-to-second week drop would buy a lot of patience, as would the fact that it was building on a lead-in (The Adventures of Brisco County, Junior) that Fox had figured was going to be their big hit. A few years later, the same thing would happen on Friday night with The Fugitive and CSI.


This isn't to say that the networks are always right, but in truth, their job is something I don't envy - they're competing with many more outlets for an audience that expects much more polished (that is to say, expensive) programs than previous generations. Having to make quick decisions is part of the territory now.

She confirms that Skeet's comment meant that we wouldn't want to see that it really was the end.

It's a pretty nice bone they've thrown us: six (probably seven) hours of some of the finest serialized television drama, ever, and an ending to a story we've all enjoyed watching. Considering that this is WAY better than NOTHING, I think CBS has been more than kind to the fans.

I'm sorry it's coming to an end, but I'm nothing but grateful to CBS for not only giving it another go, but for giving the story closure as well. There's little more they could have done (it is a business, after all), and they could have done far less.

So is it confirmed for sure that they're definitely airing the "non-cliffhanger" ending tonight? That interview is kind of vague on that.

I'm still pulling for the cliffhanger ending, regardless of what happens to the show.

Well if it was I would'nt say it's concrete, it very well could work as an ender, but it was still pretty open ended and I could see the series continuing with the war and Jericho caught right in the middle.

Yeah, I thought that was just about a perfect season ender, so I can't imagine what the cliffhanger ending would have been. This one was hardly concrete, so the only think I can think of is that the cliffhanger ending was simply more depressing. I was on the edge of my seat the whole hour. I also thought they made excellent use of their F/X budget, from making the half-completed U.S. Capitol replica in the middle of Cheyenne, to the Texan embassy, etc. etc. Also really liked the payoff to Jake's initial occupation as a pilot.

This was a good series. I hope it continues elsewhere.

This was an enjoyable finale, but I am not sure I agree 100% with Carol Barbee about it being "...very emotionally satisfying." There were a couple of story elements that I thought rang untrue. Primarily, Beck opening Hawkins laptop and going directly to all of the conspiracy evidence without even pressing a key. I mean really, with all we've learned about Hawkins over the past two seasons, are we to assume that he would make no pretense at security with such important information?

But, in this instance, I am more than happy to check my brain at the door and savor these last several episodes for what they are...fun, compelling television! Perfect? No. But, they are certainly more rewarding and long-lasting than about 95% of everything else on primetime these days. Kudos to CBS for at least making sure Jericho fans got to see the story come to a (albeit hastened) conclusion.
