I remember seeing the 60 Minutes special on George Lucas around March 1999 and they showed a clip of the pod race scene (the beginning) with the announcers talking ... that was my first instinct that something was horribly wrong with the movie, but I told that voice to quiet down.

I hate to open this can of worms but the Neimodians also have those blatantly terrible Asian accents/robes, I'm pretty sure they were done that way as a homage to old Flash Gordon serials; that is really one homage we could've done without.

I don't have an issue with their dialect or design, just the fact that their mouths didn't work right.

I also didn't have a real issue with the pod race announcer, at least in concept. The execution could have been better, of course. I think the pod race announcer is another example of Lucas making the SW universe too much like our own.

Re: New STAR WARS film coming to theaters August 15, 2008

IMO Lucas would have been far better using an alien language and having subtitles like Jabba for the Nemoidians and Gungans.

EDIT :sorry you already said that on the last page Chris

Re: New STAR WARS film coming to theaters August 15, 2008

Nobody in the Flash Gordon serials has that kind of accent. And by the third serial, Ming was dressing more like a fascist dictator.

I've actually changed my mind on Ewoks in recent years, and sort of like them now. It's a shame Lucas never let them be vicious little killing machines like one fanfilm I've seen.

To the defense of the The Clone Wars ... of course aspects of it are going to be more skewed towards kids. It's a cartoon...playing on the Cartoon Network.

So is The Venture Bros.

I didn't see that at all. He reminded me more of Boss Hogg. I loved the Bith music playing during the introduction to that scene. It was a total ripoff of the Mike Hammer theme.

Ziro was originally supposed to speak Huttese. Making him speak like Truman Capote was George Lucas' idea.

So how did a character who wasn’t even supposed to speak English wind up sounding like that? Because George Lucas insisted on it, “Clone Wars” director Dave Filoni confessed.

“Ziro, Jabba’s uncle, originally spoke in Hutt-ese, like Jabba and then he had a different sluggish voice just like Jabba, and then George one day was watching it and said ‘I want him to sound like Truman Capote.’ He actually said that and we were like ‘Wow!’ ” Filion revealed. “It’s a hybrid of it but the inspiration is definitely there on Capote. It’s one of those things that takes him from being an interesting character and I think really does put him over the top and does something. He’s a favorite among the crew here.”

Boss Nass...

Good times.

So much good in Episode 1 & also so much bad. It's a rather strange experience when you really think about it.

I know there's probably a TV Thread for this but I thought I would add it in here too. There's a trailer out for the rest of the series that will be airing this Fall.

I will be watching this cartoon with great interest.

Edit: God! The Asteroid Field! What a cue. And, this trailer looks great.

Yeah, that looks really cool.

Best trailer I've seen. And, as a huge fan of the Y-Wing starfighter, loved to see that they will be featured in the series (although it looked like it could be a slight precursor to the Y-Wings features in ANH)!

The Y-Wings have the 'bubble' for the turret and gunner behind the pilot seat. If I remember correctly, they had that in production designs for Star Wars but dropped it.

Re: New STAR WARS film coming to theaters August 15, 2008

Yep, you can see the bubbles in some of the Ralph McQuarrie paintings.

One early bit of backstory was that the rebels stripped the Y-Wings down for ease of maintenance.

"Strange experience" might be one way of putting it.

Though it is better than Episode II.

Watching the Clone Wars trailer there, I'm not even sure why it was neccessary to kill Darth Maul so quickly.

Count Dooku and the laughably over the top General Grievous aren't anywhere close to as menacing.

It would've been a lot better if they had kept Maul through the Clone Wars and had Obi-Wan or Anakin kill him at the end of Episode II.

Even better would have been to kill Maul as planned, but have Dooku feature as a character in TPM, perhaps as someone who questions whether the Republic was on the right side of the trade dispute, etc.

Now that would've been cool. Even a scene between him and Qui-Gon together.

Well yeah ... but then again, that suggestion would actually make sense.

Despite having 20 years or whatever, I honestly really don't think George knew where he was going with half of the stuff in the prequels.

The whole Syfo-Dydas (initially Sido-Dyas) thing went absolutely no where too.

Having Dooku as a Jedi in the first film and setting up that story arc and keeping Maul until at least the second film would've been much, much more interesting.

It wouldn't have even been that difficult: have Dooku as a dissenting voice on the Jedi Council, objecting to the Republic's inaction over the trade dispute, etc. Then, at the end, have Dooku leave the Jedi Order, frustrated and angry over Qui-Gon's death, etc. Perfect setup for Dooku's role in AOTC.

Exactly, and then you could have him come in half way through AOTC ... thought to be dead/lost or whatever. It would be a lot more dramatic.

Of course this would require an outline written before hand to take all these things to into account ... which I'm honestly very dubious about ever existing at this point. I think a good deal of the prequels was just made up as it went along.

Jar-Jar basically being axed from Ep. 2/3 after being in practically every five seconds of Ep. 1, I very much doubt was part of the initial plan either.

I wonder if I live to see the day that people just let the prequels alone. If you didn't like them, that's fine but why do people continue to harp on it?

The day that happens is the day people stop caring about Star Wars entirely. They'll be nothing to harp on when people don't care about the franchise any longer.

I think everyone knows that I love and defend the PT. These are just suggestions that, IMHO, would have made the PT even better.

Re: New STAR WARS film coming to theaters August 15, 2008

I can't believe how little money this made. I know people will say it still made a profit, but I just can get over a Star Wars film making under 100 million. I have to admit I hope this send a message to George Lucas that no one is interested in this part of the storyline.

What are the chances of a future live action 7, 8, and 9?

I don't know about no one being interested. The movie has made about $32 million in the US and if you figure the cost of a ticket is about $8 (though I think it's closer to $7), that's about 4 million people who saw the movie. If just 1/4 of those people who paid to see the movie watch the TV series for free, that would be a million viewers and I doubt Cartoon Network has many shows that even come close to a million viewers.

Re: New STAR WARS film coming to theaters August 15, 2008

Was it a limited engagement, or do theaters rip films out when they underperform? Because, a week after I saw this on the theater's biggest screen, it was completely gone.

It's been made pretty clear that we'll never see those films. Things can always change of course, but I don't think it will ever happen.

I understand what you are saying, but I am still shocked with how little money this made. I wonder if George Lucas was anticipating such a low number.

There was more chemistry in my 3 second exchange with the ticket taker at the Ziegfeld then there was between Anakin and Padme over the course of roughly seven hours of prequel movies...
